Mission of the Olympiad

In addition to the general cultural mission of popularizing education among young people, "Highest Standard" strives to select the best students for the country's leading universities. Such competitions have partly replaced the previous entrance exams and are a real alternative to the USE. Almost all the largest Russian universities give priority to the winners and prize-winners of their Olympiads (or other similar competitions) when enrolling. "The highest standard" is distinguished by its humanitarian orientation. Among the core disciplines for high school students in 2018-2019 are economics, English, philosophy and other social sciences.

Tens of thousands of schoolchildren from Russia and foreign countries take part in the Olympiad "Highest Standard". The number of prizes is about two thousand. For some subjects, participants will be asked to write a short essay. The dates of the qualifying round are determined in advance, the time for completing tasks is strictly limited. Detailed information on this will be published in September 2018. Laureates of the last year's "Highest standard" from the non-graduating classes are exempted from the qualifying competitions, but are also required to register. Those who wish can participate in competitions in several subjects at once, if their schedule allows it.

Participants who successfully pass the first round are admitted to the second, final round. It will be held in January-February 2019 only in person in different cities of Russia or on the territory of foreign countries. Organizational and technical support at this stage is provided by local educational institutions selected as HSE partners.

After checking the works and possible appeals, the jury will announce the winners and prize-winners in all subjects. As a rule, this happens in early spring. Later, in Moscow and other cities of Russia, where branches of the HSE are opened, a solemn award ceremony will be held with the presentation of commemorative diplomas. These documents can be submitted to the admission committees of Russian universities.

Winner takes all?

The Highest Standard and other similar competitions are often criticized for being "elitist" and "discriminating" against students who are unable or unwilling to participate. First of all, this applies to children from low-income families or from remote regions of the Russian Federation. Cases of fraud revealed during these competitions are sometimes mentioned. However, this rarely happens. Evidence shows that the winners of past Olympiads generally perform better at universities than students enrolled through the USE system.

Most of the subjects of the "Highest standard" are included in the official "List of Olympiads for schoolchildren", approved by the government of the Russian Federation. The winners and runners-up of this competition are entitled to the following benefits:

  • enrollment in universities without additional tests of knowledge in the core subject of the Olympiad;
  • maximum USE score in the profile subject of the Olympiad;
  • non-graduating students may enter the final round the following year without going through a pre-selection sieve.

Every year more than a thousand laureates of the "Highest standard" become students of the most prestigious Russian universities.

Until November 13, registration for the interregional Olympiad for schoolchildren "Highest Standard", which is held by the National Research University Higher School of Economics together with a number of other leading Russian universities, will last. In the last academic year, schoolchildren from Yakutia showed good results at the Olympiad, having won three diplomas of the first degree.

"Highest standard" is one of the largest school Olympiads in our country. In the 2017/18 academic year, 82.7 thousand people participated in the Olympiad. Diplomas were received by 2,235 people, including 1,227 eleventh-graders. 1,220 participants of the final stage of the Olympiad became students of the Higher School of Economics, taking advantage of admission benefits.

It should be noted that in the last academic year schoolchildren of Yakutia showed good results at the Olympiad.

Diplomas of the first degree were received by three schoolchildren from Yakutsk. Among the winners were also children from Neryungri, Mirny and Nyurba. In total, 11 schoolchildren from Yakutia won prizes in various disciplines. Most of the winners were noted in such a direction as mathematics (seven people). And the largest number of winners of the Olympiad was prepared by the Yakutsk City Lyceum and the Nyurba Technical Lyceum. A. N. Chusovsky.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the "Highest Standard" will be held in 25 profiles. Students in grades 9-11 have the widest choice: oriental studies, oriental languages, design, journalism, law, psychology, mathematics, physics, electronics and computer technology, a foreign language, philology, Russian, computer science, history, history of world civilizations, economics, social science, sociology, political science, philosophy, business fundamentals, financial literacy, cultural studies, biology and chemistry. 7th graders can try their hand at competitions in a foreign language, history, philology, mathematics, Russian, and 8th graders can additionally compete in economics and social studies.

For the first time this year, three new profiles will appear in the Olympiad - cultural studies, biology and chemistry, as well as a team programming competition, in which teams of 8-10 grade students of 3-4 people can participate, even if they study in different schools. Since competitions in these profiles are held within the framework of the "Highest Standard" for the first time, they are not included in the List of Olympiads for schoolchildren, annually approved by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. But the winners and prize-winners of these Olympiads will receive additional points to the sum of the Unified State Examination scores for individual achievements when applying for undergraduate educational programs at the Higher School of Economics.

But the winners and prize-winners in all other profiles of the Olympiad are provided with benefits for admission not only to the HSE, but also to many other Russian universities, depending on the profile and level of the Olympiad. Thirteen Olympiads in the framework of the "Highest Standard" were assigned the I level, six - the II level, three - the III level. The higher the level of the Olympiad, the more universities give its winners and prize-winners preferences for admission.

The Olympic competitions will be held in two stages: the qualifying round will be held from November 17 to December 2, 2018, the final one - from January 31 to February 8, 2019. After registering on the Olympiad website, the participants of the first stage on a predetermined day will receive a task in their personal account on the Olympiad website. The second round will take place internally. This year, the list of cities - venues for the final stage will be announced at the end of December.

Registration of participants will last until November 13. But already now, those guys who want to prepare for the competition can test themselves on the test tasks of the Olympiad posted on the website -

In both paragraphs, we state the same things: the boys fed the iguana, a gift from their parents. However, in the first case there is a dry presentation, and in the second - lively. This is achieved by mentioning that they fed the iguana fresh salad, that she loved it very much, that they had to go to the local market for it, that they did it together, because they were used to sharing everything.

Details set the mood and are extremely important for the short story format. However, they should not be abused either. If there is too much detail, then you risk going beyond the vocabulary limit, as well as tiring the reader and turning an interesting narrative into a boring one. In general, it is not necessary to describe everything in detail. Instead, you should choose only the brightest and most eye-catching.

If possible, in the process of writing we try to show off the vocabulary. Ideally, if the vocabulary is on the topic that we have chosen. In this case, it's a hobby.

(picture K) We did lots of things together: biking, playing computer games, swimming, skiing, to mention just a few. I keep some photos in my album which remind me of those happy days when we were free to do whatever we wanted. It was then that we promised each other that every year we would spend a holiday together, no matter what. And we kept this promise.

Having listed what the heroes of the story did, we demonstrate the vocabulary corresponding to the topic. As with details, there is no need to overdo it. Even if you know three dozen names of different hobbies, this is not a reason to write them all. Choose the most, in your opinion, advanced.

Introduction and conclusion

So, we have made four paragraphs that are attached to the pictures. But that is not all. First, on behalf of us introduction and conclusion required. Secondly, the story itself has not yet acquired completeness. At the moment, he consistently describes someone's memories. It is difficult to imagine that this can arouse the interest of the reader. To attract attention, you need to make the plot livelier. Let's use the introduction to do this.

"Come on, Jake, hold it!" he cried. I stretched my arm as far as I could, but the rope escaped me. I didn't dare look down, where the abyss was patiently waiting for my arrival. Mountaineering, this latest hobby of ours, had all the chances of being my last.

With this introduction, we kill two birds with one stone: we arouse the interest of the reader (who now wants to know whether the hero will fall or hold on) and mention the topic of the story (hobby).

The conclusion remains. In it, we must tell the reader, who has patiently mastered the previous four paragraphs, how the matter ended.

In a frantic, desperate move I grasped the end of the rope, and soon I was back to the top of the rock from where I had slipped. "You know what, Luke" I said, trying to catch my breath, "I"m kind of tired of climbing. Why don't we make a nice snowman instead?

The history of Olympiads for schoolchildren is slightly less than the history of HSE itself. The university first opened its doors for holding intellectual competitions of students in 1998. Since 2010, the Olympiad has been held in close cooperation with leading Russian universities. In 2012, the Olympiad received a new name - the Interregional Olympiad for schoolchildren "Highest standard". The words "highest standard" in the title refer, of course, to the winners and prize-winners of the Olympiad. The fact that we have them of the “highest standard” is evidenced by the data of the Interuniversity study “Achievement of first-year students of higher educational institutions in Russia”, conducted under the auspices of the Russian Council of School Olympiads. According to these data, the Higher School of Economics is annually included in the TOP-10 universities with the highest academic performance of the Olympiad diplomats. Since 2019, the Olympiad has become All-Russian.

Participants represent more than 83 subjects of Russia. A wide geographical coverage - from Kamchatka to Kaliningrad - allows us to rightfully call the Olympiad of our university All-Russian. Along with Russian schoolchildren, almost 4,000 schoolchildren from the CIS and Baltic countries “fight” for victory in the Olympiad competitions.

Schoolchildren of 7-11 grades from Russia and neighboring countries are invited to participate in the Olympiad. In the last year, 82713 participants tried their hand at the Olympiad "Highest Standard".

Participation in the Olympiad is free. The Olympiad is held in two stages. In order to take part, schoolchildren must complete the online registration procedure on the website within the established time limits. The qualifying stage is held in absentia in the online testing mode. You can participate in it from any computer with Internet access. The final stage is held in person in more than 30 cities of the Russian Federation, CIS and Baltic countries.

Almost all the subjects of the Olympiad "Highest Standard" were included in the Draft List of School Olympiads for the 2019/20 academic year, approved by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science. School graduates who became winners and prize-winners in the year of graduation receive benefits when entering higher educational institutions in Russia:

  • enrollment without entrance exams for training programs corresponding to the profile subject of the Olympiad;
  • maximum USE score in the subject corresponding to the profile of the Olympiad.

Winners and prize-winners from non-graduation classes in the next academic year are entitled to take part immediately in the final stage.

The university occupies the top lines in the ranking of universities in terms of the number of winners and prize-winners of the Olympiads admitted to the first year. Every year, about a thousand capable and talented students who successfully compete at Olympiads become students of various HSE faculties.
