Nuclear Institute. National Research Nuclear University (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute)

Graduate of this university: Hello!
Just today I saw a leak on the public page about MEPhI from another freshman: well, on the Internet someone is always wrong.
I graduated from this university myself and, frankly, I don’t regret it.

What's good about junior courses:
- It’s really hard in the first years. Physics and curse words are present, and present in large quantities. Matan is read according to a program close to the Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University; (absolutely the entire department of higher mathematics is from there).
- Engineering subjects. There is an inzhgraf, the level is far from Baumanki, and that’s good. There is enough knowledge to read the drawing and draw a sketch for installation. At one time, I was very pleased with the machine parts and electrical engineering, which together thinned out the numbers well, but taught me to very quickly understand incomprehensible and complex things.
- Teachers. Teachers (and the dean’s office) love to be harsh and destroy morally unstable students in every possible way. For which we thank them very much! This is what makes mythists mythists. First-year students will thank the evil women from the secretariat three more times, and the terrible physics teacher who sent them to retake the test for an undrawn vector over the velocity, when after university they come to work and are faced with a classic situation for our country: “Here’s your task to create a reactor cooling system from a fire extinguisher and four branches of lilac. Coordinate the project with the barmaid Aunt Zina. The deadline is yesterday.” When they persistently try to crush you, you involuntarily begin to learn to prove that you are still something of yourself.
- Dorms. Decent apartment-type dorms are a fifteen-minute walk away.

What's bad about junior courses:
- English. At MEPhI, everything is complicated with languages for techies. Although the guys from international relations manage to learn three languages. I don't know, maybe it was just me that was so bad.

What's good about scary courses:
- Industry. At MEPhI, a lot is tied to Rosatom. The second, after stress resistance, important feature of a mythist is that by the time of graduation he has a lot of contacts of people from the industry. Starting with the fact that all employees of specialized departments are engaged in some kind of real science, and the customer of this science is Rosatom. Finally, many departments are staffed and taught by people of the level up to the general director of one of Rosatom’s subsidiaries. For his diploma, every more or less normal student collects a stack of business cards from uncles and aunts who are hypothetically ready and, most importantly, can take him to their department. I myself saw how students, during a break from defending their diplomas or some conference, approached invited representatives of enterprises and agreed on interviews (for the schoolchildren who are reading, I will explain: you can get a job by sending a resume to the HR department of the enterprise, but this is magic). Agree, not every university has such a frequent opportunity to try your luck at finding a job without leaving the cash register.
Right there, but on a slightly different side. Proximity with the industry provides a great opportunity to organize wish lists with one call: during our studies we managed to visit a working nuclear power plant, look at experimental tokamaks and touch the historical first reactors with our hands. There would only be a desire.
- The science. She is. If you really want to, you can integrate well into a scientific team and gain a lot of experience and, in some places, even money. According to the latest trends in scientometrics, it is customary to measure this whole matter by the number of publications in international journals from the list of the same Scopus. I, who worked in a small laboratory at the department, had four such articles for my diploma. That is, the diploma was written at once and simply by merging them all into one document. And I wasn’t even ashamed to defend myself.
- Stipukhi. In my time they were huge, by student standards. Starting from ordinary academic ones, ending with personalized presidential, government, Rosatom, etc. At MEPhI they have large quotas, a large number of people received them. In the best of times, the total was 30+ thousand a month. It allowed me to do science for my own pleasure after classes, rather than work as a courier.

What's bad about senior years:
- The reactor is standing. All the freshmen are shouting at the top of their lungs that “MEPhI has a Reactor,” but for the eighth year now it has been undergoing endless modernization and relicensing. And no one really wants to deal with it. Sadly.
- Not the most adequate schedule. Occurs in almost all departments. Pairs are scattered throughout the day, one per day and in the middle of the day. One way or another, the majority find a job in their specialty during their last year and try to work part-time and write a diploma at the same time, but taking a few hours off work in serious offices is not so easy. The problem can be solved by agreement with the teachers, but it always comes down to disagreements in numerous groups.

Let me summarize. Despite the existing disadvantages in the form of the bureaucratic system of the institute, insufficient “client focus”, the pursuit of numbers and ratings, MEPhI is still a place where people are taught to create new, complex and physically beautiful technologies, while this place is quickly integrated into the world system education.
And for those who believe that a good university should teach you to remember everything that is written in smart books, I advise you to reconsider your views on education in general.

For new recruits: passing scores are rising mercilessly. The Olympics are your everything. October, by the way, is the month of mythical Olympics. Go for it.

"Atomic Project"

The fate of MMI was significantly influenced by the Special Committee created on August 20, 1945 under the Council of People's Commissars, which was entrusted with coordinating all work on the use of intra-atomic energy of uranium, headed by Deputy Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars L.P. Beria. And at the same time, to directly manage the work of all organizations for the use of uranium energy, the First Main Directorate was created, the head of which was the outstanding industrial organizer and talented engineer, Colonel General B.L. Vannikov. On August 30, 1945, the Moscow Mechanical Institute was transferred to the jurisdiction of this department. And just two weeks later, in the protocol No. 4 of the meeting of the Special Committee signed by Beria, the wording “On the organization of a faculty for the training of physics engineers at the Moscow Mechanical Institute” appeared.

On September 20, 1945, Resolution No. 2386627ss of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR, signed by Stalin, “On the organization of the engineering and physics faculty at the Moscow Mechanical Institute” was issued. This was the starting point for the creation of the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.

The Faculty of Precision Mechanics was reorganized into the Faculty of Engineering and Physics for the training of nuclear industry specialists. From the very beginning, during the creation of this faculty, increased government attention was paid to it. The student population was increased to seven hundred people, new departments for training physics engineers were created: the Department of Atomic Physics, the Department of Theoretical Physics, the Department of Nuclear Physics, the Department of Applied Nuclear Physics and the Department of Precision Mechanics.

On January 26, 1946, by order of the institute, the outstanding scientist, full member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Alexander Ilyich Leypunsky was appointed dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physics.

In 1946, the Department of Metal Physics, the Department of Special Mathematics, and the Department of Special Chemistry and Metallurgy appeared at MMI. According to the creators of this faculty, future graduates were to have a university level of education in physics and mathematics, and, in addition, have engineering skills. Essentially, the founding fathers intended to train a new type of specialist, a new generation of specialists who have a high level of knowledge and are capable of creating new technology.

First Teachers

A number of departments from other institutes were transferred to the Moscow Mechanical Institute, in particular from Moscow State University, Moscow Higher Technical School named after. E. Bauman, Moscow Power Engineering Institute. For example, one of the MEPhI rectors, Viktor Mikhailovich Kolobashkin, completed his first year at Moscow Higher Technical University, and then he and the whole group were transferred to MMI. Among the teachers then were unique specialists who were the flower of Soviet science in the post-war years, future Nobel Prize winners I. E. Tamm, A. D. Sakharov, N. N. Semenov, I. M. Frank, P. A. Cherenkov, N. G. Basov, famous scientists, academicians I.V. Kurchatov, I.V. Obreimov, Ya. B. Zeldovich, I. Ya. Pomeranchuk, M. A. Leontovich, A. N. Tikhonov, A. B. Migdal, G. S. Landsberg, B. P. Zhukov, S. A. Khristianovich, I. K. Kikoin. Many of them can be seen in the portrait gallery in the main building.

MEPhI

Over time, the process of gradual transfer of mechanical specialties to other institutes and expansion of engineering and physics specialties began. And in 1953, the institute acquired the current name MEPhI, all faculties of which became largely focused on training specialists in the nuclear energy and defense industries.

In 1952, according to the Decree of the USSR Government, the first four branches of MEPhI were created in closed cities (now Ozersk, Novouralsk, Lesnoy in the Urals and Sarov) for local training. Subsequently, MEPhI branches were created in Obninsk, Snezhinsk and Trekhgorny. MEPhI trained personnel for the nuclear industry in a wide range of specializations, eventually becoming a truly elite university and gaining worldwide fame.

Nuclear University

A new stage in the development of the university began in 2008, when MEPhI became one of the first two national research universities and was renamed the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”.

Today, the university firmly holds a leadership position in training specialists of the highest level, combining the principles of synthesis of education and scientific research laid down 75 years ago.

Until the 1990s, this university, worthy in all respects, trained personnel for nuclear research; now the work is carried out under the auspices of Rosatom. The faculties of Theoretical and Experimental Physics, Chemical Physics and others perform well. There are enthusiastic reviews about MEPhI teachers, and no less good reviews about the powerful theoretical and technical training of students.

The road to scientists

The Institute of Atomic Energy is located in Obninsk. For more than fifty years, he has trained many thousands of specialists for this industry both in Russia and abroad. The range of areas of study is very wide: atomic physics, cybernetics, mathematical modeling, high-performance computing, materials science, management, finance and so on. Other branches of MEPhI are no less interesting.

Software Engineering

Reviews about the Faculty of Cybersecurity are also quite numerous, which will greatly help applicants who have chosen the field of computer technology, as well as programming and, of course, information security. It must be admitted that this faculty, judging by the reviews, is not superior to similar faculties of other universities, although the MEPhI brand itself plays an attractive role.

The faculty has interesting specializations, including the “K” sector, which is responsible for training specialists in control systems for critical facilities. There are four areas in this sector, which are dealt with at departments 28, 17, 33, 68 and 22. One of the most interesting specializations at MEPhI is software engineering. Reviews about the 22nd department, which produces bachelors of this specialty, are generally good.

IFEB

Since 2006, there has been an Institute for Financial and Economic Security, created by Rosfinmonitoring to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. Training of specialists in primary education takes place on the basis of MEPhI.

Economic security (reviews about this specialty are few for many reasons) requires students not only to have extensive and stable basic knowledge. They are practiced in the central office and MRU, in the national financial intelligence departments of some EAR countries.

MEPhI manages to take into account the specifics and features of the interaction of all specialties of this unit, while providing a unified standard for training. Graduates work in Rosfinmonitoring and the FSB of Russia, as well as in the prosecutor's office and the Investigative Committee, in the staff of leading banks, in state corporations and IT companies.

IMO

A number of federal ministries initiated the creation of the Institute of International Relations in 1999 on the basis of MEPhI. International relations, reviews, are beaten only by MGIMO (and then, they say, according to established tradition) - a popular direction. Graduates are engaged in the political and social aspects of international cooperation in science, engineering and technology, analysis of the activities of international associations and organizations, support of international projects in high technology, competitive and financial and economic analysis of international markets for high-tech products.

Faculty of Humanities

It existed until 2009, after which it was renamed the Faculty of Management and Economics of High Technologies MEPhI. Economics, reviews of which are quite varied, is the main subject in the training of a specialist in international relations, since he will be involved in accounting, financial management, jurisprudence, economic and financial security.

At MEPhI, at the faculty "U", according to student reviews, international affairs specialists are prepared to a higher quality than at all other universities, with the exception of MGIMO. You can look at statistics, the spread of acts of cooperation, ratings. MEPhI is ahead of even the above-mentioned university in many respects. It’s a big plus that few people look at the ratings, and it’s more realistic to study International Relations at MEPhI than at MGIMO, even on a budgetary basis.

Correspondence school

MEPhI, about which there are so many reviews, is growing in talented students due to the existence of a correspondence school for more than forty years, where schoolchildren from the sixth to the eleventh grade receive distance learning and study courses in physics, mathematics, chemistry and other subjects, and now they are preparing for the Unified State Exam.

Manuals and assignments are sent by parcel post, then teachers communicate with children by mail - electronic or paper, the student chooses. Thus, any student can use the services of the Correspondence School, no matter where he lives.

Dormitory and hotel

There is no better student shelter than MEPhI. The hostel, reviews of which have filled student forums, is located a quarter of an hour on foot from the place of study - very convenient. Two 24-story towers - two buildings, plus two 5-story ones. 3,000 people can live in the high-rise buildings, and another 500 in the high-rise buildings. On the ground floors there are buffets and cookeries, gyms, and payphones. Throughout the territory - Internet, radio and television, security and video surveillance, automated fire protection. There is a lot to love about the MEPhI hostel; they write rave reviews. They live comfortably here. Therefore, time is not wasted on everyday problems, it is devoted to study.

The dormitories are apartment-type, where each apartment is equipped with all kinds of furniture for storing things, relaxing, working, there are refrigerators and electric stoves in the kitchens, spacious bathrooms and toilets, glazed loggias. On the territory of this entire complex, for the convenience of students, there are cash desks, a passport office, and an accounting department.
