The perfect storm on Lake Baikal. At the very end of November and December there are the strongest storms on Lake Baikal. Several winds can blow at one time. Last year I myself observed how in the north of Olkhon the North-West (or, as it is also called Sarma, Gornaya) blew from the Small Sea, accelerating along the Uzur Pad and blowing out in a separate stream into the Haga-Yaman Bay. Behind Cape Izhimei, the low clouds of Kultuk powerfully pulled, tearing the low-flying clouds to shreds. In the Big Sea, opposite Olkhon, the water boiled and gurgled. The waves were moving into the bay in a dense formation. One by one. And every ninth one rolled ashore to almost half the pebble beach. All clothes and the camera were covered with a thin layer of ice from water splashes, which were quickly set in by the 25-degree frost. But it was impossible to tear myself away from this spectacle. The power of Baikal was mesmerizing. The rhythmic crash of the waves, the howling of the wind and the drumming of stones rolled by the surf created a polyphony that put you into a trance. One could listen to this symphony for hours, forgetting about the cold and piercing wind. This went on for two days. On the third day the wind died down... Sparkling ice in Altai. Middle Multinskoye Lake, end of November. An amazing place - the lake makes eerie moans at night, it seems that it is alive. And air bubbles frozen in ice create the feeling of frozen champagne. The people who sent their works were from different parts of the planet. This suggests that all these people, no matter where they live, consider Russia the most beautiful. And they considered it necessary to send the most beautiful photographs of the most wonderful places and participate in this competition. Beauties from Kizhi and Tuvan shepherds, as if from the paintings of Renaissance artists. It seems that they feel a connection with wild nature much stronger than with civilization, due to which the most beautiful places in the country are often in danger. Deforestation, poaching, man-made disasters. The photographs are an attempt to draw attention and a call to protect nature.

Canon EOS R test: Revolution or Development

For Canon camera fans, the wait for the EOS R mirrorless system has been long and arduous. Over the past few years, the question has not even been what Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera will be, but whether there will be one at all. The successful relaunch of the EOS M line with the very successful M5 and M6 models and the inexpensive and popular M50 gave hope for the imminent arrival of a senior system camera. And here she is in front of us.

Nikon Z7 test. Came to speed up evolution...

Mirrorless cameras are here to stay, to take over the world and change it. To deny that the focus of users - professionals and amateurs - as well as the market has shifted towards mirrorless cameras is simply stupid. And it’s strange that the industry heavyweights were the last to present their mirrorless full-frame cameras. At the end of 2018, Nikon, under the loud slogan Mirrorless invented, released its first mirrorless full-frame cameras.

Fujinon XF 80 mm f/2.8 LM OIS WR Macro lens: the first of its kind

We've waited! Finally, owners of the Fujifilm X system have received a full-fledged macro lens and have been quite happy about this for six months now, because previously they only got by with a “half-breed”: the Fujinon XF 1:260 mm f/2.4 R Macro macro lens, released back in 2012. Why "half-breed"? Everything is very simple: the magnification scale of this macro lens is only 1:2 (one to two!), which looked quite strange for the top series of Fuji mirrorless cameras.

Nikon D850 DSLR camera test: solves everything? Start loving her right now...

There is no point in arguing; at one time, the Nikon D800 was not just an outstanding camera, but a breakthrough one on the scale of the entire photographic equipment market. It would seem that everyone has already forgotten about the megapixel race, and here is a gigantic resolution packed into a 35 mm sensor. Landscape photographers began to switch to 800 cameras en masse, and studio photographers too. The D800E, released at the same time, caused some confusion. Which camera works better, why do we need a moire filter if it’s only better without it, how adequate is the difference in quality to the difference in price.

AF-S NIKKOR 14-24 mm f/2.8G ED lens test

Nikon has been producing this lens since 2007, and it is still popular among professionals. And they, as you know, for the sake of excellent picture quality, turn a blind eye to weight, and price, and anything else. I believe that this lens can without a doubt be called one of the best and optimal for landscape photography.

Canon 6D Mark II tested by DXO Mark

The Canon 6D Mark II camera was recently tested in the DXO Mark laboratory and, according to the results of the main tests, scored only 85 points. Note, in comparison with other Canon models, a rather low light sensitivity of 2862 ISO and a dynamic range not exceeding 11.9 Evs. In Canon's line of similar cameras, the 6D Mark II DSLR received the lowest rating. Toshiba Electronics Europe forecasts: what will be the data storage trends in 2019

Where are we going to store so much data? Thanks to engineers and programmers, the capacity of disk media is becoming larger, and combining them into efficient storage systems is becoming easier. Thus, the problems we face today have become easier to solve. But with data generation forecasts for machines such as autonomous vehicles and smart factories accelerating, and given that humans have already created massive amounts of data, including backups, will we be able to produce enough storage to meet the needs of the next decade? ? Or will we have to think about a more ruthless approach and make decisions about what we can't keep?

Canon EOS R mirrorless camera review

Mirrorless cameras are no longer new in the digital world. And many were waiting for the first mirrorless camera from Canon. I’ve heard more than once that with Canon’s capabilities, why is it taking so long? Yes, I myself, packing another heavy backpack with equipment for the mountains, thought, well, when will it be? At least I expected that weight would be a deciding factor for me. But still, I didn’t think quite right.

Tramp of noble blood: review of the Gitzo Adventury 45 photo backpack

Today it is almost impossible to surprise someone with a new backpack. There are hundreds of them on the market, very different - with one strap and two, with a bunch of pockets, with side access and access from the back, in different volumes and colors. And still, every year famous brands release a new model range. Do you know why? Because for any photographer, choosing the right backpack is a more difficult task than climbing a volcano, holding a camera in one hand and an angry wombat in the other. A difficult task in general. By the way, I have five photo backpacks, and there is something wrong with each of them.

Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro lens review

There are not many reviews and quite a few tests on the Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro lens, so I decided to correct the situation, especially since macro lenses are my element and I use them all the time. The new Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro essentially opens up a whole direction of macro photography in the FUJIFILM X-mount line because... This is the first macro lens of this format with a 1:1 zoom and the most convenient focal length for most situations. Previously, the X-mount system had the XF 60mm f/2.4 macro, which gave only a 1:2 scale. You can consider anything “macro”, but in fact 1:1 is optimal for any more or less demanding macro photographers. It’s difficult to shoot something unusual on a smaller scale. And there was a ZEISS Touit 50/2.8 at a 1:1 scale, but it was not very convenient for field macro due to the fact that the 1:1 scale reached a focusing distance of 0.15 m.

Practice of Dmitry Kupratsevich. Night portrait

Portrait is a very popular genre in photography. And, perhaps, there are no photographers who have not taken portraits at least once in their lives. This is also a difficult genre; there are many nuances in it, depending on the type of portrait. For example, it is difficult to compare business and children's portraits. All species have basically one thing in common - there are people in the frame. But the background, clothing, choice of models and work with them also depend on the type. And when it comes to psychology, it’s time to write an entire encyclopedia on photography.
