English language lessons for a 5 year old child. Training program

Knowledge of foreign languages broadens your horizons and allows you to feel at home anywhere in the world. What parent doesn’t want their child to have developed intelligence and open doors everywhere? Therefore, children are increasingly being taught foreign languages from a very young age. It is believed that it is much easier for children to get used to a foreign culture than for an adult. But English for children requires a special teaching method, which we’ll talk about today. We'll tell you how to instill in your child an interest in learning and recommend ways to conduct English lessons for children easily and effectively. Let's get started!

As scientists have noted, the peculiarities of children's perception of the world help children learn foreign languages more easily. Children are open to everything new, and genuine curiosity drives them to learn more and more. The parent can only direct the child’s energy in the right direction. But the question of at what age should a child be taught English is very individual.

If we talk about the recommendations of specialists, their opinions also differ. Some scientists recommend conducting the first English lessons with a child from the age of 3. Other teachers advocate a more conscious age (5-6 years), and still others argue that before 7 you shouldn’t even think about foreign languages.

Each theory has its own arguments for and against, but we will not consider them in detail. In any case, only parents decide when to start learning English for their children. To make your choice easier, here are some tips.

  1. You should not start learning a second language until you have confidently mastered your native speech. This also applies to insufficient vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and violation of logical “object-designation” connections.
  2. If the child is not yet actively striving to explore the world, it is better to wait a while until the natural need to gain knowledge manifests itself.
  3. If, on the contrary, the child shows excessive activity, then you should definitely pay his attention to entertaining English lessons.
  4. Think about how psychologically you yourself should start learning English for your child. At the same time, parents must understand that their children are influenced by their own example. At a minimum, it is advisable that you know English at a beginner level or expand your knowledge with your children.

If you cannot make a decision, even after carefully weighing all the pros and cons, conduct a trial lesson with your child. If the baby doesn’t like it, then it’s not time yet. And if the child remains delighted, then all parental doubts will immediately disappear. Don't be afraid to try and don't rely too much on expert opinions. All people are individual, and it’s never too late to start learning.

Thus, we have theoretically figured out the age of young students. Now let's move on to more practical issues, and we will analyze in detail the methods and recommendations for teaching English to children of different ages.

English for children aged 3-4 years

This age is the most optimal if you decide to start learning English with your child from the cradle. During this period, children turn into active “why-whys” and they are interested in almost everything around them. At the same time, kids think in bright and simple images, which help them remember new information easily and quickly. Therefore, foreign language lessons for children aged 2.5 - 4 years old will certainly bear fruit. But it is very important to choose the right format for English classes for kids.

Where to begin

Little children are carefree and spontaneous, so there is no need to meticulously explain to them the rules of the language. English lessons for children should be held exclusively in a playful way: your child should not feel any moralizing, coercion or demands. With a forceful approach, you will not only teach your child nothing, but also, on the contrary, you will form a hateful attitude towards any foreign languages. Therefore, be very careful: it is better to have spontaneous lessons for 10-15 minutes in the form of a game than 30-minute lessons in the full sense of the word.

If we talk about where to start the process of learning English with children, then there are many options. Among them:

  • Alphabet;
  • Greeting phrases;
  • Designations of family members;
  • Numbers, colors, etc.

But again, don't expect strict and consistent training like adults. Try to offer topics that interest your child, for example, learning words about animals or colors in English together. Say a word, and let the baby repeat after you, or, for example, show a card with such a picture.

In general, the presentation of material should be very dynamic and varied. Don’t make your child get bored, let alone tired of long explanations. Try to use fun and playful methods to teach English to young children. We have listed some of them below.

Songs

Educational songs are one of the best ways to teach English to young children. Fun music quickly attracts children's attention and activates auditory memory. This is how the kids have fun and at the same time remember English vocabulary easily and quickly.

It is also very effective to include videos with songs for kids. A bright video illustrating the plot of the song will further attract attention and help engage visual memory in the work. And after a couple of training sessions, move on to performing songs on your own with your child. You can also add fun dancing or play with the images of objects/animals that are discussed in the song.

In general, such entertaining lessons will develop the following skills in children:

  • Interest in learning foreign languages;
  • Knowledge of English words;
  • Ability to recognize English by ear;
  • Ability to speak independently (repeating memorized phrases).

And, of course, the children’s memory functioning and general development of intelligence will improve.

Fairy tales

Another effective method with which you can effectively teach English to children under 7 years old. What child doesn’t love to hear about the adventures of fairy-tale characters, especially when mom or dad talk about them.

Read fairy tales to your child as you always do, only now slowly add elements of the English language to them. First, one or two words that are familiar to the child, and later try to study with adapted versions of English fairy tales. Be sure to read the texts playfully: with changing your voice, showing scenes, gestures, etc. The brighter the images, the more interesting it is for children.

Games

And the children’s favorite pastime is outdoor games, fun and logical guessing games. All these elements also need to be actively used when teaching English to children.

The simplest thing is to tell your child English words using educational cards. You show the card and the child names it (or vice versa). Another fun game: the parent portrays a fairy-tale character, animal, bird or object, and the child must name the hidden character in English. You can also just walk outside and name the colors of surrounding objects.

There are many options, the only thing I would like to note is that we would not recommend accustoming your child to electronic games at this age. Do not leave children's education to computers, tablets and other gadgets. Only by your own positive example and participation can you impart the best knowledge and skills into your child.

English for children 5-7 years old

Preschoolers have not yet lost their childish interest in the world around them, but they are already more serious than three- and four-year-olds. Therefore, many parents believe that this is the best age to start learning English. Lessons for preschool children are also conducted in a playful way and do not take much time, but the methods of learning English for preschool children are, naturally, slightly different.

Vocabulary

English lessons for children over 5 years old are always mostly about learning new words. English grammar is still too difficult for this age, and the letters are too simple. So this period is ideal for developing an active vocabulary in a child.

It is better for preschoolers to study vocabulary on certain topics. It would be good if these were vocabulary cards with bright pictures that reveal the meaning of the word. Firstly, a beautiful design in itself will attract children's attention, and secondly, with a picture the word is simply easier to remember. In addition, you can play exciting educational games with cards, but more on that later.

Vocabulary is also mastered in the process of studying children's rhymes, songs, and fairy tales.

Dialogues

To prevent your child from forgetting the vocabulary he has learned, add more English phrases to your conversations. For example, instead of good morning, say “ Goodmorningmyson (mydaughter)”, provoking the child to also answer in English. Of course, you shouldn’t go too far and constantly communicate in a foreign language. It is enough to use several popular phrases per day.

Also, English lessons for children 6 years old and older can be conducted by acting out small scenes. For example, you can use hand puppets and repeat the lines of characters from your favorite fairy tales. Or just play with dolls, making up a simple conversation:

  • -Hello!
  • -Hi!
  • -Mynameis… etc.

It is advisable for the parent to say the line first, and the child to repeat after him, substituting the characteristics of his character.

Cartoons

First of all, foreign language classes should be interesting to the children themselves. And educational English cartoons will perfectly help parents in developing interest in learning in their preschoolers.

Play small colorful videos and watch them with your baby. Fortunately, today on the Internet you can easily find educational videos in English for children of any age. At the same time, it is not at all necessary to explain to the child in detail that we are not just watching a cartoon, but learning a new language. Give your child time, and he will become involved in the process and will be able to understand the simplest lines of the characters. Then it’s the parent’s job to do a short discussion after watching and consolidate the vocabulary heard.

With the right approach, such entertaining English lessons for children five to six years old are simply irreplaceable. After all, such activities arouse interest in the baby and help develop all the necessary speech skills:

  • A set of new vocabulary;
  • Understanding English by ear;
  • Speaking (repetition of phrases + discussion with parents);
  • Correct pronunciation.

In addition, this technique is very useful for general development, because cartoons reveal everyday moments and explain important life principles to children in an accessible form.

Games

As with small children, English for children 5 or 6 years old is always taught in a playful way. Therefore, organize various mini-games, contests or competitions more often.

So, with the help of cards you can play “ guess the odd one out": 3 cards on one theme are laid out, and a fourth is added from another deck. The child’s task is to remove the unnecessary card. There is an interesting variation of this memory game: 3-4 cards are laid out in a row, then the child closes his eyes, and the parents remove 1 card. The child must name exactly which card was removed.

You can also play with preschoolers in " who knows more words», « guess quickly», « sea figure freeze», « crocodile" and so on. The main thing is not to forget that victory and parental praise are very important for children. Therefore, speak kindly to your child more often, encourage him if he loses, and admire his successes when the baby wins. A warm attitude and interesting games, and even more so victories in them, motivate the child to study English more and more often.

This is how they teach English for children 7 years old. In fact, in preschool age children are just getting acquainted with the language, getting used to its sound and new words. But the role of such an easy game is very important: it liberates the children, and subsequently they will not have a language barrier, i.e. fear of speaking a foreign language. On the contrary, the second language will be perceived as a natural and necessary thing.

English for younger students

And finally, the final period of childhood refers to elementary school. Here the parent’s task is to engage more with the child, explaining points that have not been considered in the school curriculum. At school, the teacher often does not have time to explain the lesson clearly, and a 1st grade student is not always able to concentrate and understand the material. Therefore, carefully monitor your child’s school progress and help him understand the curriculum.

In general, English for children aged 7-10 years is also partly taught in the format of a game, but with the active introduction of serious grammatical points. At this age, the conscious formation of language skills begins, so classes should be aimed at the comprehensive development of the child.

Reading

In our first English classes at school, we, of course, learn letters and their pronunciation. This level is necessary because not all children studied a foreign language before entering first grade. Then, according to the curriculum, there are reading rules, but in fact they are taught very crumpled, and children do not have time to fully master such an important topic. Therefore, this moment is filled in at home.

Carry out the training gradually, mastering no more than 1-2 rules per lesson with your child. Such small loads will not become an unbearable burden and, taking into account regular repetitions, will significantly improve the child’s English skills. On weekends, improve your reading skills with short, adapted texts for primary school-aged children. They will help you consolidate the rules you’ve learned and get acquainted with new vocabulary.

Dialogues

It's no secret that a language was created to be spoken. Therefore, foreign speech must be constantly practiced in conversation.

Of course, for first-graders such a task will be too difficult, but for 2nd grade students, perhaps, they are already able to independently compose a sentence from several words. But remember that classes should not be forced: English for children aged 8 is still the same game. Therefore, just occasionally, depending on the child’s mood, exchange a few general phrases with him or play “ name/describe the object" For this game, knowledge of the simplest constructions is enough:

  • Itisabanana. Thisbananaisyellow. Ilikeitverymuch. And what is it? —This is a banana. This banana is yellow. I really like him. What is it?

Such a dialogue, with the proper level of preparation, is possible even for a 5-year-old child, let alone second graders. By the age of ten, children will be able to form common sentences and use basic English tenses.

Grammar

Learning the rules of grammar is the very moment when English for schoolchildren ceases to be an entertaining game. Most children find grammar difficult, which is due to short school lessons and not always clear explanations from teachers. Therefore, grammatical topics need to be intensively studied in home classes.

English grammar for children 7-9 years old is taught in a semi-game form. The basic rule is briefly explained and then reinforced by reading short stories, speaking dialogues and doing exercises. At the same time, the material is presented in the most simplified form: children do not need to know exceptions and special cases at the initial stage, because unnecessary information will only confuse the child.

It is also recommended to use electronic materials to study grammar. These could be presentations, training videos, mini-games and tests. The more diverse the presentation of the topic, the more parts of the brain are involved in the work, and, accordingly, the material is easier for children to assimilate. The main thing to remember is that any rule must not only be learned, but also be able to be used in speech.

Tests

Junior schoolchildren also cannot do without tests to check the topics they have studied.

Children in grades 1-2 are usually given a short oral survey, which is not much different from a dialogue game. The guys also solve very easy tests. For children 9-10 years old, they give more difficult work: correct specially made mistakes, answer a question, make a proposal on their own. Tests are becoming more diverse; now tasks require not just choosing an answer, but supplementing it with your own words.

But starting from the age of 12 or even 11, when tenses and irregular verbs are actively being mastered, almost every lesson ends with tests. And this is the right approach, because... Every detail of theory learned must be practiced.

Children, of course, perceive checks without enthusiasm. But the parents’ task is to convince the child that he can easily cope with the tasks because he is smart and capable. Praise more often and be less strict with mistakes made. It is better to calmly explain where the child was wrong and do the work again later than to yell and develop a hatred of learning in children.

Games and websites

Everyone loves to have fun, so the gaming method is effective for children as young as 3 years old, as young as 9 years old, and even as young as 15-16. For younger groups, it is recommended to conduct more outdoor and oral games, and English for children from 10 years old can be diversified with the help of electronic games and applications. However, in moderation, a computer will not harm children.

Hello, hello, my dears!

They say that in life it is enough to read only 10 books. But to find those top 10 - you need to read hundreds! The same thing happens in English. Now hundreds of publishing houses publish thousands of books, and finding exactly those 10 is almost impossible. Therefore, you have to look for advice and reviews from those who have used them.

To save you some time, I will take you on a short excursion into the world of books. And you will know for sure which English language textbooks for children are worth purchasing, and which ones are better left “for later.”

How to choose the right textbook?

  1. Proven authors.
    The authors can be both foreign and Russian. I can say one thing: preference in most cases goes to foreign authors. But personally I also really like the tutorial Shishkova “English for kids”. Written by a Russian author, it is no worse than its famous competitors.
  2. Interest!
    No matter how hard you try, no matter what you do, if it does not arouse any interest in your child, you are wasting your time. Children are completely different from us. They won't do something unless it makes their eyes light up. Therefore, select textbooks in such a way that your child runs to class, and does not refuse or do something through reluctance.
  3. Level!
    Choose textbooks according to the level you need. Even worse than doing something that is completely uninteresting is doing something that is too hard. I'm not saying that you should do everything simple and easy, but think about it, when you are 1.50 tall, you are unlikely to jump over a 4 meter stick in athletics. Everything is absolutely the same here. Don’t be lazy to buy 2 textbooks - knowledge acquired correctly will be absorbed much better.

To buy or not to buy! (to buy or not to buy!)

I very often hear from my friends moms: recommend good books for children! Well, write it down!

If the names of British publishing houses mean absolutely nothing to you, then you don't know much about learning English! The most famous and largest of them is Oxford Publishing House. It has proven itself to be the best source of books for learning English.

As I always say: you need to learn from native speakers. The same applies to books. I have great respect for my fellow countrymen, but it is British authors who deserve the highest degree of respect. Keep in mind that such publications are usually written entirely in English. Therefore, they are suitable for those parents who speak at least English.

Before we start, I want to remind you once again of one simple but most important thing: children should be interested! They will not learn something simply because “that’s the way to go”! They won't spend hours and days studying textbooks! Therefore, the most important thing is to interest the child!

So, I will start, of course, with foreign publishing houses...

Therefore, the first book that I recommend to you is Activity Book for Children! This is one of Oxford's most popular textbooks. It's perfect for young children learning English from scratch because the whole book is a coloring book! For example, here is a picture of balls, each of which is labeled with a certain color so that the child can color and thus remember the colors! It's the same with objects in pictures.

This book is intended for the little ones; for those who are about 4-5 years old and a little older! The series consists of 6 books, each of which allows you to expand your vocabulary with a new level. After it, your child will know basic vocabulary, understand the very basics of grammar and answer the simplest questions. ()

The next level book is Picture Grammar for Children . This book is already much brighter than the previous one, at least for the simple reason that it is already colored. But that doesn't make it worse.

Here the exercises are also based on pictures. Children learn vocabulary and then practice writing new words. Moreover, questions are formed from these very words so that kids can begin to develop oral language skills.

For example, there are a lot of toys in the picture, each labeled. The child immediately learns the names of the pictures. Then exercises begin where he must rewrite the name of the toy and draw it. After which there are questions like “what toy do you have?”

Working with this textbook, the child will both learn and relax. Compiled in such a simple and interesting form, it will not force your child to torture himself and you, but, on the contrary, will make the process of learning the language simple and enjoyable.

The next book is no longer suitable for very young children, but is perfect for those who at least know something.
Grammar Friends . A book with invariably bright pictures, but built more on dialogues, more thematic vocabulary: family, work, etc. If you complete the course of 6 textbooks, you can be sure that your child will have a good foundation for oral speech. ( View or buy these books on my-shop.ru)

Smart Grammar and Vocabulary.
This book already has more or less serious explanations of grammar. If your child completes this series, they can safely say they have reached the Elementary level. This is the level when there is some knowledge of vocabulary, some knowledge of grammar, but they are not systematized in a clear order. But for this level - this is normal!

This series will help your child fall in love with the English language even more, because eye-catching pictures and interesting tasks are exactly what is needed at this age ( View or buy these books on my-shop.ru)

Active Grammar (Learners Publishing). A very good textbook for entry-level (foreign-speaking parents and teachers). It doesn't have as many pictures as Picture Grammar for Children(although there are enough of them and they are very bright), but they explain grammatical phenomena in context in great detail (starting with punctuation and ending with parts of speech and elementary speech structures). Practical tasks for them and game options are also given.

Discover English (Pearson Publishing). This is a truly exciting textbook for elementary and middle age children! The series is divided into 4 parts (by levels) and lives up to its name 100%. The children “discover” the world of the English language with great pleasure. More than once I taught English to children using this particular set of manuals, which, by the way, contains both a basic book with an audio supplement, a workbook (to reinforce writing skills) and a manual with tests (to test knowledge). A textbook with teaching instructions can also be purchased or downloaded separately for the teacher (or parent). Of course, when working with this textbook, you need to speak English at an elementary level. And if this condition is met, you and your child will be delighted with the learning process!

Friends (Longman Publishing). This textbook, like the previous one, is divided into levels, and its first part (Starter) is ideal for working in a primary class with those who already have a small base (for example, based on one of the previous grammar textbooks). Further, the levels become more complicated, but the fascinating form of presenting the material remains the same, continuing to immerse the child in the language environment headlong. What I and the children like about it is that throughout the entire series of textbooks, the child is accompanied by heroes - the same children, with similar hobbies and interests.

Little children love stickers. Therefore, it will be incredibly interesting for them to study using the bright books of the publisher National Geographic Children's Books with different tasks and countless stickers! This way, completely unnoticed by themselves, they will begin to understand English words by ear (of course, under the strict guidance of an adult!) and will even get used to letters. I think it’s a great idea to stick it and remember it)). This game guide greatly motivates the child to learn the language and can be used as an addition to the main textbook.

Let's move on to Russian authors and popular Russian publications...

They can be used by parents who do not speak English, but have a great desire to teach or help their child learn English.

In one store I somehow came across an interesting series of books called "Play and learn" . I liked the playful approach of the authors and compilers. Each book, which is a separate issue (there are 12 in total, in my opinion), has three sections in which a child can play, read and listen to a fairy tale, or take an English lesson on some popular topic.

Explanations for the assignments are in Russian, so every parent will be able to study with their child using these, in my opinion, wonderful books. As for age, I would say you can start at 6 years old, and the upper limit depends on the child and his knowledge - 8-9 years. Therefore, it will be useful for the youngest schoolchildren too!

A very well-structured self-teaching textbook that will help parents study with their 6-10 year old child on their own, as well as improve their school English effectively: It's a long way. Tatyana Morozova . In addition, on the author’s website on this page You can also download the audio supplement for this textbook for free. The children really like the textbook, as the main characters are very nice and accompany the students throughout their learning journey. I think this manual is an excellent alternative to foreign publications! (This tutorial can also be found in the store Labyrinth)

English for children. Valentina Skulte. This is a classic that I wrote about. As a rule, this textbook is liked by those who like to go in slow steps and do a lot of the same type of exercises to consolidate the material. In this regard, it is a very good help for children and their parents.

English for children. Great tutorial. Sergey Matveev. I always recommend this author as an experienced linguist who conveys information on learning the language independently in detail and gradually. He has a lot of good manuals - about them. This guide is aimed at teaching children independently without tutors and teachers. Everything is intelligible and understandable ( View or buy this book on Litres).

Some of these books, if desired, can be found on the Internet and even downloaded for free on some online resource. Or you can simply order them on a reliable (and one of my favorite!) website ozon. according to these textbooks, you will give him a good foundation and by the end of school, with this approach, he will know English at the level, and you will be able to put a bold tick in front of the goals achieved in your life :).

What textbooks do I use to study with my daughter?

I have a daughter who is now 6 years old. As an English teacher, I wanted her to start learning English as early as possible. She and I have been practicing spontaneous English a lot and unobtrusively with the help of available materials since she was 2 years old... But later I was very careful in choosing a textbook for her. I tried to find only those textbooks that met all 3 criteria: they were from a good publisher and author, they were of an appropriate level and, most importantly, they were interesting for my baby. And I found something that suits her perfectly.

For a long time we studied English with her using a textbook. Shishkova “English for Kids”, edited by Bonk . I can tell you with all honesty: this is a worthy book for children aged 4 to 6 years old! Every time my daughter happily sat down to do her homework, listened to songs and rhymes, and easily and quickly memorized new information.

At the moment, she and I have already “grew up” from Shishkova, so I opted for Picture Grammar for Children . (he was on my list) - both are happy :). From time to time, she and I repeat what we have covered, in addition, I add something of my own to what she already knows, and she, in turn, sometimes asks me questions that suggest expanding our vocabulary and taking additional material. Of course, I add to our training colorful cards with the most popular words for children, which will last you a long time (we have these are wonderful cards )! We don’t forget to check in with Leo regularly ( popular service for learning English online - I talked about him in). Everything with us happens unobtrusively and leisurely. And I advise you to go at the same pace!

I’ll ask you one thing: don’t buy the whole stack of books at once! It’s better to do 1 series, but with high quality, and then move on to the next one, than to grab onto everything in a row, but never develop any kind of system.

Therefore, my dears, choose for your children what will interest them the most and, most importantly, will help them learn the language better.

And I will help you along this path in my blog.

Note to parents

On my website you can choose a tutor in your city for any subject - it’s convenient and fast. and find the best tutor for your child!

And for today I say goodbye to you.
Until new useful meetings!

Many modern parents know that learning English, started before school, gives much better results than at an older age. Psychologists are still arguing at what age it is better to start lessons, but it is much more important that children's developmental periods require a different approach and lesson program. Teaching English to a 5-6 year old child is characterized by involuntary memorization of information, visual perception and the desire to stand out among peers. Based on these and other age characteristics, a lesson model and teaching methodology should be built.

The age of 5-6 years has features associated with developmental stages. Some children already know how to read, others have just begun to speak, and others already have writing skills. Temperament and hobbies can affect learning just as much as skills already acquired. To make the process of knowledge formation easy and interesting, parents should help children 5 years old learn English by following some tips:

1. You should not teach skills that the child has not yet mastered in Russian.

If the child does not yet know how to write, there is no need to teach him writing in English; the same goes for reading and learning letters. Suitable first skills: shapes, colors, simple actions, names of animals and other information that is familiar to the baby and will be easy to learn. When the child already knows how to read and write, you can assign tasks in accordance with this.

2. You can teach unobtrusively, talking about ordinary everyday actions, naming surrounding objects.

The main goal at 5-6 years is to expand your vocabulary.

3. It is difficult for a small child to understand and remember simply spoken phrases - show me!

To assimilate information at the age of 5-6 years, he will need visual aids and visual perception. To do this, you can use cubes, printed materials, books, children's computers and other games that can captivate the child.

4. All children are different, so there is no need to force a silent child to repeat the same sentences several times, and it is not necessary to persuade an active child to listen for a long time.

Even if the child is silent, he develops a knowledge base, which he will definitely show later.

5. There must be a constant dialogue, an immersive environment.

The more often parents pronounce English words, construct simple sentences and explain their meaning to the child, the sooner he will remember them and begin to repeat them.

English for children 5-6 years old: home study program

A daily English lesson for children aged 5-6 years can be built on the basis of everyday skills, actions and phenomena that the child already knows about, doing those tasks that he successfully copes with in Russian. This approach will not take much effort, and the result will be noticeable very quickly. A lesson plan might look like this:

Day of the week Subjects Lesson Composition
Monday Introduction of new concepts, demonstration skits The lesson should explain new concepts, simple terms (fruits, vegetables, animals, the human body, etc.). The lesson can be carried out with soft or other toys, include cartoons, show visual aids
Tuesday Watching cartoons and performances in English On YouTube you can find channels with recordings of simple cartoons. You can watch one and talk to the child about what he saw, talk about the meaning of the words, and put their pronunciation
Wednesday Learning the alphabet One of the lessons should be devoted to letters and words. The child will systematically see them and remember them. You can use letter cubes, word cards, and other visual aids. Training can be structured like a game of lotto or “guess it.”
Thursday Constructing a dialogue, monologue, learning songs The construction of dialogue and monologue can be mastered in skits, role-playing games and by memorizing songs and poems
Friday Creative activities (sculpting, drawing) Children love to do something with their hands, sculpt or glue, draw and then with an adult call everything with English names, write a story
Saturday Studying counting, arithmetic Counting can be taught, just like lotto letters. You can use a role-playing game in a store, kindergarten and other topics where numbers can be useful
Sunday Fun walks You can learn English while walking. In the park you can talk about natural phenomena, talk about the world around you, the weather in English

English for children 5-6 years old - checklist for parents

Some methods of teaching children English promise results even with half-hour lessons. But such progress is only possible if the lessons are daily. If you make an effort, English for children aged 5-6 years can become a favorite activity, as a result of which he will be able to acquire the following skills:

Simple conversational speech;
vocabulary formation (at this age the child should know colors, names of toys, objects, actions, counting to 10);
creating a basis for solving communicative problems in the target language in various topics;

English for children 5-6 years old: what should training be based on

English classes for children aged 5-6 years should be easy and interesting. A reliable way to captivate your baby is to immerse him in a natural environment. For this purpose, immersion techniques are used in training.

While the child is playing, the adult unobtrusively talks about his actions and names objects. At first glance, the baby may not remember anything, but he will retain the information received, and after a while he will be able to use it.

Read on our website:

It is important that the child enjoys the learning process. There is no need to force him or demand anything. If he does not repeat what he has learned, this does not mean that he did not remember or did not understand. Some psychologists believe that the process of memorization in calm, silent children is faster than in those who repeat. Therefore, classes need to be built on the basis of your son or daughter’s favorite hobbies, make them as comfortable as possible for his temperament and adapt to his needs. Then the result will not be long in coming, and the interest will be genuine.

A universal way to teach a child is through games and songs:

Song for 5 year old children in English

A good basis for teaching English to 5-year-old children is the song Head, shoulder, knees and toes from Exercise Song for kids. The song names body parts and shows exercises for exercise. The text is easy and quickly remembered, so the song will be interesting at any stage of a child’s education, even if he does not yet know the language.

It's never too late or too early to start learning English. If mom and dad have come to the conclusion that classes are needed at the age of 5-6, it is important to approach learning wisely. The lessons should be easy and interesting, and the learning process should be exciting, only then the baby will be happy to participate in the parents’ plans. You can build classes based on the immersion technique, following the skills and character of the baby.

“My name is Sophia, I’m 15 years old. I have been studying at the YES center for more than six months and I feel noticeable progress in English! The teaching methodology is aimed primarily at speaking practice. It became easy to perceive English by ear and conduct basic conversations. No cramming and huge homework, like in a regular school. However, progress is obvious. Thanks to the YES school"

“We are studying at the Foreign Languages Center for the first year. We like. We go to 2 foreign languages and see noticeable progress in learning English and Chinese. The teachers were chosen very well in my opinion. My son enjoys going to school. There is a warm and friendly atmosphere here. In general, both parents and child are satisfied. Thank you!"

“When choosing English language courses, I chose the YES foreign language school for many reasons. Firstly, the groups here are small, so attention is paid to each student. Secondly, new, good textbooks from well-known foreign publishers. Almost every lesson we watch a video with native speakers speaking; the topics of the lessons are interesting - there is something to discuss, unlike topics in school classes. By the way, it was thanks to the courses that I began to be able to express my thoughts in English, and I understand speech quite well by ear. The YES school often hosts various events and organizes trips. I recently attended an open Japanese language class and am planning to enroll in this course as well.”

I’ve been studying in YES center for 2 years and during these 2 years I’ve learned English from B1 level to B2 + level. Almost C1 level. I really like the lessons. I’ve met a lot of teachers here and all of them were really kind. And I really understand the explanations, that’s why I understand practically everything during our lesson. By the way our lessons are interesting, we not only study. We also play different games to practice vocabulary, grammar and just to practice our speaking. By the way, we also speak a lot during the lesson. That’s why we not only drill vocabulary and grammar and also make our listening and other skills.

Well, I’ve been studying in YES for 2 years and I think my life changed when I have met so good people who I communicate with. I regard our teacher Kate who is one of the most caring and understanding teachers I have ever met. She really explains the material in a good way what’s why I like her way of teaching. Also I am happy that I’ve met so many friends here. We communicate and spend a lot of time together. YES center helped me to improve my skills, my knowledge and my abilities in general. That's why I'm really thankful.

I have been studying at YES since the school opened. I can say that these are very effective classes and additional courses. I learned a lot in a very short period of time. I also achieved great success in school. I can say about the teacher that we have a very beautiful and responsive teacher, kind, she always meets halfway. She is not too strict, but not too soft either. My classmates are cool and cheerful, I can communicate well with everyone.

I would like to note that I chose training courses taking into account proximity to home, and I live in the Khovrino area. Before the start of classes, the administrators offered me to take free written and oral tests to determine my level of English language proficiency. As a result, I was very lucky to study English in a friendly group with a talented, responsive and charming teacher, Ekaterina! Classes in Ekaterina’s group are optimally balanced for the student: listening to the teacher, communication with the teacher and with students in the group, and the student’s speaking itself are as controlled as possible. This allows us to gain comprehensive language skills. In teaching, we use a communicative methodology, the main goal of which is to teach how to use language in real life from the first lesson. In group classes, Ekaterina unites us into small subgroups or pairs, giving us collective tasks.

I started learning English when I realized that I couldn’t live without it. For work I have to travel a lot to different countries and of course it is very convenient to have a translator next to you. What happens when he's not there? This is how serious motivation arose in mastering the language. At first I started teaching him on my own, and then I realized that in this matter I needed a system and a good teacher. I think I'm lucky. Somehow I got to an open lesson at the yes center... Having completed the first level of elementary, I feel confident in communicating with foreigners. And from my own experience I realized that a foreign language opens up new opportunities! The main thing is not to be lazy and not miss classes.

Khovrino

At the YES center I learn three languages: English, Spanish and Chinese. Why three at once? Because foreign languages are good for me! I especially like the Spanish language because it is very beautiful. The most difficult language is Chinese, and especially writing hieroglyphs. I haven't decided yet what I will become in the future. Possibly a diplomat.

Most of all I like our teacher, Ekaterina Nemtsova. She explains well, is kind and sympathetic. I like people who sit at the reception; if anything happens, they will tell me. I like the design of the school. Before class I like to drink hot chocolate. I have friends here. I need English to travel to international dance competitions and to succeed at school. In general, I like learning English.

I, Dmitry, am a design engineer at a small Moscow company. One of my tasks was to organize a design department in China. There I needed spoken English and I ended up at YES. Having chosen from quite a few schools in my area, only here I was offered a summer group for beginners. And already the third level I remain a faithful student of this school. What is important to me, and here it is fully present, is a clear, proven, consistent training system. Slowly, step by step, topic by topic, the material is worked out and added. Based on the characteristics of the group and its wishes, the teacher and methodologist focus on the tasks that cause us the most difficulty. Thank you to our teachers for their sincere desire to teach, for their diligence and patience.

My first acquaintance with the YES Foreign Language Center began after I got a job. There is an urgent need to learn English. My level of English was zero, so I was very worried about how I would keep up with the group, how the learning process would go, and so on. But as it turned out, I was worried in vain. All staff and teachers turned out to be very responsive, always ready to help. I especially want to say a huge thank you to the teacher, Evgenia Popova. Studying at the Elementary level, I can already explain myself and conduct a dialogue with foreigners (native speakers), read books, and understand what is sung in the songs of foreign performers. The result of the training met all my expectations. Thank you to YES school for existing.

Subway Kuzminki

I would like to thank Evgenia, an English language teacher for little ones, for her professionalism and individual approach to each child. Ilyusha attends classes with great pleasure and interest, which are held in an easy, playful manner. This makes it easy to remember new material. I would also like to say a special thank you to the administrator Yulia, who will always greet you kindly, listen and answer all your questions.

Starting to learn English with a 5-6 year old preschooler is quite simple. This is a fascinating and multifaceted process, and parents will have to make considerable efforts not only to teach their preschooler, but also to develop their own language skills.

What and how to teach with your child?

Methods for teaching English to children aged 5-6 years differ from those intended for children. At 5 years old, a preschooler already speaks Russian fluently, knows letters and even knows how to write. Therefore, it will no longer be possible to introduce a foreign language into everyday life as a second native language as organically as it happens with children aged 2-3 years.

  • Buy or draw and hang posters with the alphabets of both languages in the nursery. Immediately at the initial stage of learning, it is worth studying the letters and learning how to write them. But you should not focus on the rules for reading vowels in open and closed syllables, diphthongs, etc., as in school English lessons. It is enough to inform the child that, as in the Russian language, one thing is written and another is pronounced.
  • When learning new words, be sure to show how they are written. In this way, learning to read in English will take place at the same time. Since there are a lot of exceptions to the reading rules in this language, it is worth remembering words with their visual presentation. At the beginning of learning, it is worth using words with simple spellings.
  • Use cards, or even better, stickers that you can use to label the things you need. If there is no space in the kitchen to place a “still life” consisting of a plate, cup, spoon, glass and other labeled items, you can place them in the nursery on a special shelf. Or create a kind of “dictionary” from thematic cards that the child could use.

At the initial stage of learning, in order to maintain the child’s interest in a foreign language and give him the opportunity to develop communication skills, you need to learn words and phrases that:

  • often used in your home in Russian;
  • relate to the child’s area of interest (dolls, cars, robots, animals, drawing, cycling);
  • will be needed in everyday life for active communication - names of dishes, furniture, clothing, body parts. These also include the main verbs and adjectives used for communication - “sleep, walk, eat, give, show, look, go, good, tasty, hot, cold” and others.

This approach will allow the child to quickly learn to understand and actively use English in everyday life.

It's easy and simple to learn a foreign language in a group. If you can find like-minded people with children of the same age, you can organize joint walks, tea parties, themed gatherings, and watching cartoons. With thoughtful organization, the mother will no longer need to force the child to use the language - the kids will learn to communicate with each other in English. At the same time, it will be possible to look and analyze what words the baby lacks and at what moments he switches to Russian. It is also good if children hear adults talking in English.

How to get a child to concentrate?

You should not tire your preschooler with hours of pre-planned activities - he still gets tired quickly, and it is difficult for him to maintain concentration for a long time. It is best to discuss some rules with him and stick to them. For example:

  • fulfilling some requests made in English;
  • using the language in any situations - during lunch, walking, etc.;
  • encouragement for the correct completion of any tasks (for example, you can make new cards with English inscriptions for new toys).

In order not to discourage the desire to learn English, in no case should you punish a child for refusing to speak a foreign language in some situations. In this case, it is important to understand what is stopping him - embarrassment, fatigue, lack of necessary vocabulary. Ideally, when English is heard in the house constantly and is used freely by at least one of the parents in everyday life, the child very easily and quickly grasps words and phrases and does not have any problems with communication in a foreign language.

How to avoid possible mistakes?

If a child is not interested in learning a language, it is all because of the parents’ inability to organize classes correctly. Although, strictly speaking, the very formulation “organize classes” is no longer correct. Communication in a foreign language needs to be introduced into everyday life - and this can be quite difficult for adults themselves. On the other hand, if you can do this, you will definitely be able to teach your child English and improve your own level.

Before you start learning a language with a preschooler, you need to talk with the rest of the family and discuss several fundamentally important points.

  • It will be necessary to create a language environment whenever possible. These include speaking English at home, watching TV channels, and being able to communicate with other children and adults in English. Ideally, if you can find English-speaking friends, a nanny, or a tutor for your child. You should not force your child to watch cartoons. It is enough to turn on the TV on English-language channels more often, and it does not matter what is on there - news or talk shows. The child will get used to the melody of the sound of the language and intonation.
  • The rest of the family, more or less familiar with English, will have to take part in the child’s education to the best of their ability: answer his questions, fulfill requests made in English.
  • Adults will have to repeat or learn a large amount of vocabulary. It’s impossible to avoid the direct question: “What’s the word for socket in English?” when a child needs to ask dad to plug in the tablet for charging. You need to be prepared for any questions and have a large vocabulary yourself, because under no circumstances should you teach a child to be clever and construct phrases differently at the initial stage of learning. This may disappoint him in his parents in general and the need to learn English in particular.

From a psychological point of view, for the effectiveness of English classes, it will be easier and more useful to change your attitude to what is happening: not “we are creating a language environment for teaching a child English,” but “we are creating a language environment in order to improve our English ourselves.” The child will simply be presented with the fact that a second language has appeared in the house, in which he also needs to communicate. If parents wisely present this idea (for example, they explain that the language is necessary for a future trip abroad), then there will be fewer whims and demands on the part of the child to switch to Russian when he has no desire to speak a foreign language. Mom, dad and older sister need English - so they speak it, watch movies online and news on TV. With this approach, adults will have more opportunities to passively teach the child the language, even in those moments when he is not in the mood to study. Having realized that nothing much depends on his desire, the child will be more relaxed about the need to speak a second language, fulfill requests made to him, and answer questions, which will ultimately increase the effectiveness of learning.
