He added that in this part of the testing it is possible to determine the respondent’s adaptive abilities, signs of obvious accentuations (character traits in which some of his traits are excessively enhanced) and psychopathy, and in some cases, characterize his condition as borderline. In addition, based on certain responses of a serviceman, one can identify his tendency to use alcohol and psychoactive substances.


As Alena Pavlova, a specialist in advisory and clinical psychology, clarified in an interview with the site’s correspondent, the second test serves as a personality questionnaire aimed at characterological characteristics. Thus, depending on the answers, the candidate’s leadership qualities, self-esteem, desire for power, attitude to the law, punctuality and accuracy, depression, anxiety, and personality type (extroversion-introversion) can be identified. According to the agency’s interlocutor, a calm and balanced applicant who does not have obvious addictions to alcohol and conflicts is most suitable for military service.

What is curious is that in some cases, for example, when there is a predominant number of identical answers in the second part of the test, the message “Most likely, you did not take the testing seriously, which casts doubt on the sincerity of your desire to serve in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Thank you for your participation!” . This ends the testing.

Applicants who have reached the third part are offered a series of statements regarding views on military service and the world around them, habits and everyday behavior. The task is to choose the option that is most suitable for the candidate personally or to complete the statement.

The last test, according to psychologists, analyzes motivational preferences and helps determine the dominant factors in choosing a profession, and also shows the life strategies of the respondent’s professional self-determination.

PFD in the FSB is a Psycho-Physiological Examination of a person entering service in the FSB.

The Volga Federal District in the FSB includes includes the following types of testing:

  • Medical examination of health status.

Polygraph: principle of operation

A polygraph is a rather complex technical tool designed to verify the veracity of information communicated by a person. The more well-known name for this device is a lie detector.


The polygraph assesses the reliability of the data on the basis of monitoring and recording the parameters of cardiovascular activity, as well as respiration, electrical resistance of the skin and other indicators of the physiological activity of the person being tested.


A modern polygraph consists of a portable PC, on the monitor of which indicators are displayed, and all received information is stored in memory, as well as sensors that record indicators of physiological parameters. Sensors record the following indicators:

  • breathing (thoracic and diaphragmatic or abdominal);
    electrical conductivity of the skin;
    pulse or blood pressure.

    These are the main indicators. Analysis of each of them is required to make a decision about the truth or falsity of the information received. If at least one of the listed characteristics is excluded, the results of the study are considered unreliable (invalid).


    There are sensors that check other parameters: voice changes, body tremors (motor activity). They are optional. You cannot make a decision based solely on these indicators.

    Components of a polygram structure

    Background – individual indicators of the physiological processes of the subject, who is at rest when he is not asked questions.


    A reaction is a significant change in the dynamics of physiological parameters observed in response to a certain stimulus (question). It can be expressed in an increase or decrease in the intensity of the dynamics of processes.


    An artifact is a change in the activity of physiological parameters caused by the influence of destabilizing factors (external or internal). This could be a cough, a reaction to external noise, or pain. They are not related to the questions asked.


    The reactions that the subject demonstrates are not specific. This means that it is impossible to establish exactly what stimulus caused them (lie, fear, association). The main criterion is the stability and stability of the expressed reaction in response to a (significant) stimulus.

    Polygraph in the FSB: in what cases is it used?

    All applicants for any position in the FSB undergo a polygraph test.


    This is necessary to check the presence of hidden negative character traits of a potential employee, selfish motives for joining the service, and identifying “dark” spots in the biography (fraud, criminal record, addiction, corruption and other illegal actions).

    How to pass a polygraph at the FSB: procedure

    • First, the subject undergoes instructions and signs documents confirming his consent to take a lie detector test.
      To take a polygraph, a person sits in a test chair. It is important that he sit comfortably; no factors (hard seat, uncomfortable posture) cause discomfort.
      Before testing begins, all the necessary sensors are connected to the body, which will record physiological indicators during testing and transmit them to a computer (polygraph). To reduce psychological stress, the specialist explains what each sensor is intended for.
      Then follows the main testing stage - answers on questions.

      The test lasts approximately 2 hours:

      • First carried out instrument calibration(its setting). Its essence is that questions are asked, the answers to which are known and obvious. The subject needs to answer honestly or lie.
        Then follows testing stage. While answering questions, sensors constantly read the physiological parameters of the subject. When he lies, the indicators change. This happens because any lie is a stressful situation for the human body. The reaction is formed at the subconscious level, so it is almost impossible to control it consciously.         Statistics show that out of 10 people, only 1-2 candidates for a certain position successfully pass a polygraph test at the FSB.

        All questions are related to identifying whether a person has problems with alcohol, drugs and the law. General education training

You are already preparing for the Unified State Exam, as well as for additional exams of “increased complexity” as part of the school curriculum under the guidance of school teachers, and some even with tutors. Moreover, you need to take your preparation very seriously, even if you are either a criminal or have a legal right to non-competitive admission. The attitude towards cadets in military universities has changed fundamentally over the past five years - if previously they were dragged, as they say, “by the ears,” now they are expelled for poor studies without regret.

The approach is exactly the same as in the general physical training program - not “to study at all,” but to purposefully prepare for admission. Professional and psychological selection

There is no point in demonizing him. The psychological readiness of a candidate to study at a military educational institution is determined by specialists from the psychological selection unit based on the study and assessment of the military professional orientation, general intellectual development, adaptive abilities and neuropsychic stability of the candidates.

This is a set of ordinary military registration and enlistment tests - “Questionnaire of a military-professional orientation”, methods of “Analogies”, “Number series”, “Visual memory” (“Figures”), “Imaginative thinking” (“Patterns”), “Arithmetic counting”, “ Verbal memory”, “Establishing patterns”, “Selection of words”, as well as the multi-level personal questionnaire “Adaptability” by A.G. Maklakova. All of them are presented on the Internet. In flight, naval, tank and other schools, additional tests are carried out for reaction speed (the light comes on - press the button) and others, depending on the profile of the university.

The main professionally important qualities for an officer are: developed organizational and cognitive abilities, intelligence; clear and intelligible speech; the ability to navigate in a complex environment, highlight the main thing and make the right decisions in a short time; determination, courage, self-control, initiative, responsibility, exactingness, integrity, independence.

All these qualities can and should be developed, so at the beginning of the 10th grade, ask the school psychologist to test you (explaining to him why this is necessary). Identify underdeveloped psychological qualities and negative character traits, ask a psychologist to recommend the necessary exercises and again – practice, practice, practice.

Medical examination

Initially, you need to understand that the medical board does not intend to discriminate or humiliate you. There were many cases when a serviceman simply died during morning physical exercises or a field trip from a load that was too much for him. An autopsy showed heart problems. The unit commander got hemorrhoids all over his head, and he had a completely fair question: where were the medical board looking?

The most serious health requirements are in military educational institutions for the training of pilots and navigators. Restrictions for health reasons are set out in the order of the Russian Ministry of Defense of 1999 No. 455 “Regulations on the medical examination of flight personnel of the aviation of the RF Armed Forces” (the order is available in the reference and legal system “Consultant-Plus”, access to which is available in any regional library). Quote from the order: “Citizens with normal color vision, visual acuity of at least 1.0 in each eye without correction, blood pressure not higher than 130/80 and not lower than 105 are sent for examination to determine their suitability for admission to military educational institutions that train flight personnel. /60 mm Hg, body mass index not less than 19, body weight not more than 90 kg, height not less than 160 cm and not more than 186 cm, leg length not less than 80 cm, arm length not less than 76 cm, height in position sitting no less than 80 cm and no more than 97 cm.”

All other military educational institutions have almost the same health requirements. The only difference is in visual acuity (naval and border guards - 0.8; airborne and tank - 0.6; all others 0.5), and in height: RVVDKU - not lower than 170 cm, border guards - not lower than 155 cm , all others - not lower than 150 cm. A contraindication for admission to naval, border and airborne schools is even a slight curvature of the spine. Watch your posture from childhood! Read more in the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated July 4, 2013 No. 565 “On approval of the Regulations on military medical examination” (will come into force on January 1, 2014), and the order of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, which will be issued in pursuance of this resolution.

Keep in mind right away that you will not be able to deceive the medical board (in the direction of improving your health). In the 21st century, increasingly advanced medical diagnostic methods are used, and even the driver’s commission requires an EEG (electroencephalogram) result. So, having memorized the relative positions of the seven letters (Ш, Б, М, Н, К, У, И) in Sivtsev’s table, you are unlikely to mislead the ophthalmologist, because there will be no table - the letters are projected randomly onto a white wall when you press a button . In principle, all existing health problems will be revealed during your initial military registration (carried out from January 1 to March 31 in the year the youth reaches the age of 17), so you don’t need to wait for illnesses to appear in the military registration and enlistment documents, and it’s better treat everything that can be treated at your age in advance.

Order of priority actions

For possible admission, choose four or five military educational institutions, including one that you are passionate about, and two that are closer to home. Consult with parents and plan trips to selected universities. Be sure to go to open days at all selected universities, and the sooner the better. A competition is held among persons who have passed the professional selection in accordance with the number of points scored as a result of the tests. Candidates who use priority right to admission(including orphans, graduates of Suvorov schools and cadet corps; children of military personnel who served for more than twenty years; citizens who completed military service by conscription and entered training on the recommendations of commanders of military units and combat veterans - see the full list in parts 7-12 of Article 71 of Federal Law No. 273-FZ of December 29, 2012 “On Education”), secondly – ​​candidates classified as higher professional suitability categories according to the results of professional psychological selection, in the third - those who received higher score in a core subject, fourth - those with higher GPA document on secondary education.

It is also desirable for the applicant to have such military-applied skills as:

  • categories in athletics or skiing, one of the types of wrestling or boxing, bullet shooting;
  • skydiving (you can jump from 14 years old);
  • primary light diving training (from the same age).

Above the three highlighted italics criteria (category of professional suitability, score in a core subject and average score) it was necessary to work at school. What can you influence when you are called to a meeting of the admissions committee, especially if, based on the results of the entrance tests, you are in the middle of the list?

At the selection committee meeting, be calm, confident and friendly. The exams are already over and you can no longer change their results. To achieve an adequate state of mind, remember how you took third place at the city judo championship (or some other competition).

So, you will probably be asked what you intend to do if you do not pass the competition. The correct answer is this (memorize it as “Our Father” and practice pronunciation at home): “I’ll return home, go to the military registration and enlistment office, ask to be drafted for military service in the fall, and try to get into ______ (the branch of the military corresponding to the profile of the university). I will serve with dignity and receive a recommendation from the unit command for admission to _______ (name of university). Today, all candidates hoping to receive an officer position in the armed forces of the Russian Federation or enter a higher military educational institution are required to undergo a professional selection procedure.

This is a set of comprehensive examinations that are carried out to determine whether a person is fit to serve as an officer or to enter a military institute.

Aptitude tests

In addition to the standard medical examination, mandatory for everyone, professional selection involves passing a series of psychological tests, field testing and medical examination.

The graded system effectively eliminates those candidates who do not have the required psychological, personal or physical characteristics.

It is worth noting that this procedure is quite difficult to complete with a positive result. At the same time, some of those applicants who failed to pass the professional selection process can pass a regular commission and become lower-category military personnel.

Who needs to take tests

Not all conscripts entering service for the first time need to undergo professional selection. It is held for those who apply for the rank of officer or intends to obtain higher education at one of the military educational institutions.

Every conscript has the right to sign up for professional selection; to do this, he must voice his desire immediately after the start of the conscription procedure. After this, the military registration and enlistment office commission will send the applicant for additional checks, which will take place separately from the bulk of future military personnel.

IMPORTANT! Vocational selection can be completed at any time, regardless of the conscription. To do this, you need to contact the military commissariat with a statement of desire to enter contract service in the Russian army.

What tests need to be taken

Applicants for officer positions or those preparing to enter higher military institutions must go through several stages of verification:

  3. Field testing.

Physical tests

Testing, designed to identify the candidate’s physical characteristics, is carried out in the format of a field test.

Goland’s test, Yovaishi’s questionnaire, R. Cattell’s technique, CAT, etc.

The results are assessed on a ten-point scale, where 10 is the highest possible score.

IMPORTANT! If a candidate does not score the required points during the initial testing, he has the right to take the test again.

The main purpose of passing tests

The main purpose of the professional selection of military personnel carried out by military registration and enlistment offices is to identify the personal and professional data necessary for service.

Testing allows us to identify true desires of military personnel and those personal qualities, which will make it possible in the future to staff the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation with the highest quality.

Testing allows, at the selection stage, to weed out those candidates who are not capable of occupying military leadership positions. Only those who have sufficiently developed the following qualities should remain:

How to dispute test results

The results of the psychological and medical commission may be disputed in some cases. The challenge is carried out after the candidate applies to the military registration and enlistment office with a request to cancel the results.

In this case, a prerequisite is the presence of compelling reasons to change previous medical conclusions. An example would be a bad ECG, the data of which was distorted due to ARVI. If there are no such grounds, the medical examination will not be carried out again.

When the selection is considered unsuccessful

Most often, problems arise with passing psychological testing; they are most often the reason for refusal to appoint higher ranks.

The grounds for refusal are:

  • Significant speech defects that make it difficult to give orders to subordinates.
  • Hot temper and inability to control oneself.
  • Low psychological stability, incorrect behavior in emergency situations. Showing cowardice and hysteria when finding yourself in an unusual situation is not allowed.
  • Unwillingness to obey orders from management.

IMPORTANT! A candidate can be refused even on the basis of his tattoos. The commission may consider some images to be signs of mental disorders.

  1. Non-standard sexual orientation.
  2. Psychological health disorders.

They can also be refused due to inconsistency of physical data. The conscript is required to show a good reaction, the ability to quickly recover after significant physical exertion and be extremely resilient. The following may become an obstacle to testing:

  • Serious visual impairment (disabled category).
  • Hearing impairment.
  • Colorblindness.
