Many English textbooks are signed as for intermediate students. This means that they are designed for mastering the intermediate level of English. Students graduating from non-linguistic universities have this level of language. But where did this name come from?

The Common English Proficiency Scale was created by the ALTE Association. They identified six possible levels of language acquisition:

  1. Beginner - initial. This is the level of those who are just starting to learn English. A person at this level learns the alphabet, phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, starting with the simplest sentences and questions.
  2. Pre-Intermediate - below average. A person with this level of knowledge already knows how to build sentences, can briefly talk about a common topic.
  3. Intermediate - medium. A level that allows you to travel and learn new things. The vocabulary increases significantly, a person can already support a conversation, express his own thoughts, talk with a native speaker, travel freely around the world.
  4. Upper-Intermediate - above average. This level is designed for the practical application of communication skills. It is most in demand in the fields of education and business. With knowledge of the language at this level, you can even enter a foreign university.
  5. Advanced 1 - advanced. It is necessary for specialists. This level is also studied by people who want to speak, read and write fluently in English. With this level, you can get a prestigious job in another country.
  6. Advanced 2 - super-advanced. This is the level of native speakers. It is simply impossible to learn a language better than them.

All exams in Cambridge are tied to this scale. Publishers rely on it when releasing dictionaries for learners of English. Each reference book, exercise book, book for learning a language must indicate the level, the possession of which allows you to use this publication.

Mastery of the Intermediate level allows a person to have conversations on everyday topics. He can read and write well in English, speaks well, knows the grammar of the language well.

Knowledge of English at the Intermediate level allows students to enter language universities and even try themselves in Western educational institutions.

Requirements for students who know the Intermediate level

What can a student with an average level of language knowledge? He can take an interest in the opinion of his interlocutor, he can clearly talk about what he feels, express his own ideas. Such students are able to show that they did not understand the interlocutor, they can ask to repeat what was said.

What does the Intermediate level mean? People around, even foreigners, can understand the pronunciation of a person who owns this level. A person is able to use the correct intonation, place stress in words. The vocabulary is quite wide.

The Intermediate level also means that the person understands the tasks of the exercises. He can distinguish by pronunciation whether English is native to his interlocutor.

The Intermediate level is the ability to write letters, both personal and official, the correct filling of questionnaires and declarations. A person who owns the Intermediate level can express his thoughts grammatically correctly.

How do you know that you have an intermediate level of language proficiency?

Many people study the language, but not everyone knows such a concept as the Intermediate level, what it means and what their own knowledge is. People can evaluate their knowledge by talking to a teacher. But there is also the possibility of self-determination of their level.

Conversational skills

How well do you know English? The Intermediate level, which means "average", makes the following requirements for speaking skills:

  • The ability to correctly compose familiar words into sentences, use the right intonation, express emotions and determine the emotions of your interlocutor.

How will your speaking skills develop in the Upper-Intermediate course?

At the Upper-Intermediate level, special attention is paid to the development speaking skill (Speaking). The speech of an English learner becomes “complex”: you will not only know in theory, but will actively use in practice all aspects of the tenses of the English language, conditional sentences, passive voice phrases, etc. At this stage, you will be able to maintain a conversation with several interlocutors or Express your point of view on almost any topic in a long monologue speech. You stop speaking in short, abrupt sentences: at the end of stage B2, you will build long sentences, linking them together with words and expressing your thoughts clearly.

On the English Upper-Intermediate course, you significantly expand your vocabulary (Vocabulary). Listening to the speech of native speakers (listening) will gradually improve: you will learn to understand the meaning of what is said, even if the English speaker speaks with a slight accent or at a fast pace. At this stage, you learn to listen to long texts in both standard English, also called the language of the BBC, and in variable, that is, with various local features and accents.

Reading skill (Reading) is also actively developing on the Upper-Intermediate course. At this stage, you will read feature articles, op-eds, and works of fiction in non-adapted English with near-total reading comprehension. On average, the text will contain no more than 10% of unfamiliar vocabulary that will not interfere with the general understanding of the text.

You will be able to spontaneously express your thoughts and in writing (Writing). At the Upper-Intermediate level, you learn how to write in certain formats: formal and informal letters, articles, reports, essays, etc.

At the end of the Upper-Intermediate course, you can take the FCE, IELTS or TOEFL exam to document English language skills at B2 level. The term of study at the Upper-Intermediate level

The term for studying English at the Upper-Intermediate level depends on the individual characteristics of the student and the regularity of classes. The average duration of study on the Upper-Intermediate course is 6-9 months.

Learning at the Upper-Intermediate level is a rather complex process that requires serious efforts from both the teacher and the student. But your efforts will not be in vain, as knowing English at this level will allow you to get a well-paid job or enter a prestigious foreign university where teaching is conducted in English. In addition, you can not stop there: if you have already successfully completed the previous steps, then you must continue to develop your skills. It is necessary to repeat the material covered so as not to forget it, and to use the acquired knowledge in practice.

In the resume for various vacancies in the column “language proficiency”, applicants often indicate “English language proficiency at the Intermediate level”. Translated into Russian, this means "possession at an average level." Employers have an ambiguous attitude to such a record. Some believe that this is an insufficient level, others believe that this is quite normal for conducting professional activities in a chosen vacancy. So what is this level? And is it really sufficient? Can it be improved and how? In this work, we will try to answer these questions.

First of all, we note that the concept of "average" in this case is very conditional: after all, we are not in the English-speaking language environment, and English is precisely a foreign language. And to master the language, even at an average level, is already a great achievement. After all, why only on average? The language consists of words, phraseological units, speech constructions. Moreover, many of them are completely unknown to foreigners, and are used only by native speakers, and their true meaning is the subject of study by linguists (see the works of L.V. Koshman, I.V. Tsvetkova, I.A. Zimnyaya, etc.). For example, the expression “We are in the same boat” is translated (in our opinion) as “We are in the same boat”, while in the USA this phraseological unit means “We are all in the same position”, i.e. has a completely different meaning, familiar only to native speakers and, moreover, in a single country. There are also many different individual words and phrases that belong to the general vocabulary, but are not used as often as their synonyms and paronyms, familiar to those who study English. In other words, the concept of "language" as a whole can be compared with Moscow, in which local residents are well oriented, on the one hand, but where, nevertheless, it is impossible to know everything even for a native Muscovite. Yes, and the knowledge of the city is improved only with the years lived in it, i.e. Again, this is purely empirical.

Hence, English Intermediate- level is really normal for most of our compatriots studying it. Moreover, language proficiency at this level is the result of long and hard work: it has been established that this level is typical, for example, for graduates of schools with in-depth study of the English language with the teaching of a number of subjects in it. Teaching in such schools is carried out according to an enhanced program that places very high demands on the student.

What are the skills and abilities of a person who knows English Intermediate? This is the ability to communicate on various everyday topics, a good understanding of oral and written speech, the ability to correspond in English, a good command of its grammar (although errors are allowed), an average vocabulary.

Below we give a brief description of this level in relation to the main criteria for assessing language skills and abilities.

Dialogic speech (conversation):

  • Understand other people's opinions, attitudes and emotions and verbally express their own;
  • Express a lack of understanding of a situation and ask the interlocutor to explain it;
  • Express your thoughts in a simple way using common syntactic constructions;
  • Communicate with a clear and understandable pronunciation for others and intonation selection of sentences for the purpose of the statement;
  • Express personal emotions and feelings with the help of logical stress and intonational means.

Listening (comprehension of what is heard):

  • Understand the main ideas set forth in the text, the general meaning from the context and recognize the content of what is heard;
  • Recognize and distinguish between the pronunciation of a person for whom English is not native, and a native speaker;
  • The ability to understand and distinguish between informal and formal written and spoken language in a variety of situations.

Written speech:

  • Fill out various papers: declarations, questionnaires, etc.;
  • Write personal letters of various content;
  • Write informative formal and informal letters;
  • Write down the sequence of events;
  • Describe people, places and situations;
  • Supplement the presentation of a particular situation with personal comments;
  • Simply and grammatically correctly express your thoughts in a written speech statement.

The skills and abilities described above are quite enough for full-fledged work in a domestic company, by the nature of which there are situations where the use of English is necessary. For example, such an employee, using English Intermediate, can carry out business correspondence using common lexical units, meet a foreign partner at the airport, tell him about the company's activities, etc.

At the same time, we note that this level is not enough for those who are going to work abroad or engage in research work there. Modern practice shows that persons who own English to Intermediate-level, pass international TOEFL exams with results of 5.0 or 5.5, which is not enough, for example, for admission to a foreign university where education is taught in English (the passing score in such educational institutions according to the TOEFL system, as a rule, is from 7.0 - A.Ch .). In this regard, it should be noted that English Intermediate can be improved in all aspects of language skills and abilities through special training sessions in courses or individually. At the same time, most methodologists are unanimous in their opinion that the preparation should be gradual, i.e. level-by-level (for example, from the Intermediate level to the Upper-Intermediate level, and then to the Advanced level).

In other words, if your level of language proficiency is average, then it is quite possible to improve it: depending on the goals of learning and the environment for using the English language, an appropriate curriculum, necessary manuals and teaching aids will be selected.

The levels of English were invented so that language learners could be divided into groups with approximately similar knowledge and skills in reading, writing, speaking and writing, as well as to simplify testing procedures, exams, for various purposes related to emigration, study abroad and employment. Of course, there is no clear boundary between the levels, this division is rather conditional, necessary not so much for students as for teachers. In total, there are 6 levels of language proficiency, there are two types of division:

The classification was developed in the late eighties - early nineties of the last century, it is fully called the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (abbr. CERF).

English levels: detailed description

Beginner level (A1)

At this level you can:

  • Understand and use familiar everyday expressions and simple phrases aimed at solving specific problems.
  • Introduce yourself, introduce other people, ask simple personal questions, such as “Where do you live?”, “Where are you from?”, be able to answer such questions.
  • Maintain a simple conversation if the other person speaks slowly, clearly, and helps you.

Many who studied English at school speak the language at about the Beginner level. From the vocabulary only elementary mother, father, help me, my name is, London is the capital. You can understand well-known words and expressions by ear if they speak very clearly and without an accent, as in audio lessons for a textbook. You understand texts like the “Exit” sign, and in a conversation with the help of gestures, using individual words, you can express the simplest thoughts.

Elementary level (A2)

At this level you can:

  • Understand common expressions on general topics such as: family, shopping, work, etc.
  • Talk about simple everyday topics, using simple phrases.
  • Tell in simple terms about yourself, describe simple situations.

If at school you had 4 or 5 in English, but after some time did not use English, then most likely you speak the language at the Elementary level. TV shows in English will not be understood, except for individual words, but if the interlocutor speaks clearly, in simple phrases of 2-3 words, you will generally understand. You can also incoherently and with long pauses for reflection tell the simplest information about yourself, say that the sky is blue and the weather is clear, express a simple wish, make an order at McDonald's.

Beginner - Elementary levels can be called "survival level", Survival English. It is enough to "survive" during a trip to a country where the main language is English.

Intermediate level (B1)

At this level you can:

  • Understand the general meaning of distinct speech on general, familiar topics related to everyday life (work, study, etc.)
  • Cope with the most typical situations on a trip, travel (at the airport, in a hotel, etc.)
  • Write simple connected text on topics that are common or familiar to you personally.
  • Retell events, describe hopes, dreams, ambitions, be able to briefly talk about plans and explain your point of view.

Vocabulary and knowledge of grammar is enough to write simple essays about yourself, describe cases from life, write a letter to a friend. But in most cases, oral speech lags behind written speech, you confuse tenses, think over a phrase, pause to pick up a preposition (to or for?), but you can more or less communicate, especially if there is no shyness or fear of making a mistake.

It is much more difficult to understand the interlocutor, and if it is a native speaker, and even with fast speech and a bizarre accent, then it is almost impossible. However, simple, clear speech is understood well, provided that the words and expressions are familiar. You generally understand if the text is not very complex, and with some difficulty understand the general meaning without subtitles.

Level Upper Intermediate (B2)

At this level you can:

  • Understand the general meaning of complex text on concrete and abstract topics, including technical (specialized) topics in your profile.
  • Speak quickly enough so that communication with a native speaker occurs without long pauses.
  • Compose clear, detailed text on various topics, explain the point of view, give arguments for and against various points of view on the topic.

Upper Intermediate is already a good, sound, confident command of the language. If you are talking on a well-known topic with a person whose pronunciation you understand well, then the conversation will go quickly, easily, naturally. An outside observer will say that you are fluent in English. However, you can be confused by words and expressions related to topics that are poorly understood by you, all sorts of jokes, sarcasm, allusions, slang.

You are asked to answer 36 questions to test listening, writing, speaking and grammar.

It is noteworthy that to test listening comprehension, phrases such as “London is the capital” recorded by the announcer are not used, but short excerpts from films (Puzzle English specializes in learning English from films and TV shows). In English-language films, the speech of the characters is close to how people speak in real life, so the test may seem harsh.

To check the letter, you need to translate several phrases from English into Russian and from Russian into English. The program provides several translation options for each phrase. To test knowledge of grammar, a completely ordinary test is used, where you need to choose one option from several proposed ones.

But you are probably wondering how the program can test the skill of speaking? Of course, an online English proficiency test will not test your speech as a person, but the test developers came up with an original solution. In the task, you need to listen to a phrase from the movie and choose a cue that is suitable for continuing the dialogue.

Talking is not enough, you also need to understand the interlocutor!

The ability to speak English consists of two skills: to understand the speech of the interlocutor by ear and to express one's thoughts. This task, albeit in a simplified form, tests how you cope with both tasks.

At the end of the test, you will be shown a complete list of questions with the correct answers, you will find out where you made mistakes. And of course, you will see a chart showing your level on a scale from Beginner to Upper Intermediate.

2. Test to determine the level of English with a teacher

To get a professional, “live” (not automated, as in tests) assessment of the level of English, you need English teacher who will test you with assignments and an interview in English.

This consultation is free of charge. Firstly, there may be a language school in your city that offers free language testing and even a trial lesson. Now this is a common practice.

In short, I signed up for a trial test lesson, got in touch on Skype at the appointed time, and the teacher Alexandra and I held a lesson, during which she “tortured” me in every possible way with various tasks. All communication was in English.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher explained to me in detail in which direction I should develop my English, what problems I had, and a little later she sent a letter with a detailed description of the level of language skills (with grades on a 5-point scale) and methodological recommendations.

This method took some time: three days passed from the application to the lesson, and the lesson itself lasted about 40 minutes. But it is much more interesting than any online test.

Someone promises that you will learn English in a month, and someone shows a training program for a year and a half or two. Who determines how much time it takes to learn a language? Plus or minus?

Behind last years in many language training centers, after completing the Intermediate level, students are offered to move on to study not Upper-Intermediate, but Intermediate +. The question arises - where did the “+” come from and is it necessary to spend time on it, is it a trick to get additional profit?

For decades, we have been taught that training centers use a classification of 6 levels of English: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advance. Why did they suddenly develop the 7th? And after all, it is not offered everywhere, someone continues to teach according to the 6-level system. Should you consider your training center as a scammer if it has 7 levels?

Where do legs grow from?

But in reality it turns out the following. Intermediate + was introduced by the British themselves, or rather the organization that initially developed its 6-level system, wrote the program and published textbooks - Oxford University Press (most of all educational centers teach exactly according to the methodology and with the help of Oxford textbooks).

The main reason is the large gap between the knowledge after the completed Intermediate level and the expected level at the beginning of the Upper-Intermediate study. That is, a student who passed the test well and confirmed his Intermedia, feels like a loser at Upper, because the tasks of a new level turn out to be very difficult for him. For this reason, many “do not survive” at all before Advance.

Why only now?

Textbooks for the "new" level have been published since 2012, when it gained particular popularity. Ailts began to be required not only for admission to foreign universities operating according to the British education system, many employers became interested in an international certificate, in Kazakhstan it is possible not to take an English exam for admission to a master's program if there is a valid Ailts certificate (with a score of at least 6 points) .

In some English-speaking countries, Ailts is required to obtain a work / student visa or to move there for permanent residence. In general, IELTS forever!

And everyone knows that only those with a completed Intermedia level are taken to prepare for the Ailts. However, not all students with the Intermedia level are then given the power of Ailts, sometimes it seems to people that they did not seem to have learned the language. The result is stress, low scores and wasted money.

Also, one cannot dismiss the fact that our country is increasingly integrating into the international space and more and more people have an incentive or even a need to learn English.

The number of language centers and their graduates is increasing, the number of people who do not learn English "for themselves" or do not consider this process as a fashion or a hobby (such students after mastering Elementary leave to learn the next language), but purposefully strive to master the language at a good level.

And this is where the discrepancy is revealed - why is there such a big difference between the closed level of Intermedia and the base that is expected from those students who came to study at the next level of Upper.

What were you hoping for?

Did the Oxford Methodists initially make a mistake in creating the classification and textbooks, or are local educational centers and language courses somehow incomplete or incorrectly teaching the language?

In fact, just a different mentality and idea of ​​learning. Our post-Soviet teaching methodology, which is still in force in Kazakhstan, primarily at school, involves the following scheme: what the teacher gave in the lesson, he will ask later. Accordingly, no one else does anything - the ceiling is to do homework.

The Western system sees the teacher not as a mentor or absolute authority, but only as a coordinator who gives direction and helps in case of difficulties. A student in the same British school is accustomed to looking for materials on the topic himself, to perform additional tasks for homework, and to be independently responsible for his knowledge.

Therefore, the Oxford methodists implied that at the level of Intermedia, foreign students would themselves develop and improve the language, read additional literature, do not only homework, but also practice similar tasks, expand their horizons and the list of topics, and hence vocabulary. Do everything that the British themselves do when they learn a foreign language. Sorry, this is not how we learn. 🙂

Intermedia+ also consists of 60 hours (not academic, but full time) and lasts approximately 5 months, just like Intermedia. Intermedia+ does not replace the Upper level, it allows you to deepen and consolidate the knowledge gained at Intermedia. If upon completion of Intermedia at Ailts, for example, you would have received 4-5 points in the exam, then with Intermedia + it is already 5-5.5 points without special training.

Intermedia + will not be needed for those students who have passed the final tests on Intermedia by almost 100%, continue to study a lot on their own, or if a person got the opportunity, having closed Intermedia, to constantly communicate with native speakers (living in an English-speaking country, working in an English-speaking company, etc.).
