5. EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGIES

During the practical sessions the following methods and technologies are used: teacher's explanation, listening to a tape recording of dialogues in foreign languages, watching educational films with subsequent discussion, working with electronic dictionaries in two-way translation of texts, role-playing games, analysis of "cases".

Independent work includes: preparation for tests, examinations, homework, preparation and presentation of essays, translations of texts, memorization of educational material. Internet, linguistic computer programs.

6. EVALUATION TOOLS FOR CURRENT CONTROL OF PROGRESS OF INTERIM CERTIFICATION ON THE RESULTS OF MASTERING THE DISCIPLINE

For the current control of progress, oral surveys, tests, homework, tests, essays, translations of texts are used.

For intermediate certification, tests, tests and exams are used.

The grade for mastering the discipline is determined for the exam (2nd semester).

1. Translate the text into Russian in writing using a dictionary.

For purposes of radio engineering, the most fundamental particle is the electron. The electron is the smallest particle whose mass and charge have been determined. It is this particle that constitutes most of the current flow in vacuum tubes. It is the negative particle of the hydrogen atom.

Another fundamental particle is the proton . The proton is the positive nuclear particle of the hydrogen atom. It has the same magnitude of charge as the electron, but its charge is positive, whereas the charge of the electron is negative.

Other charged particles called ions may exist. They are usually created from a normal atom or molecule by the addition or removal of one or more electrons or protons from its structure. The mass of such ions is always much greater than that of the electron.

emission. The emission of electrons from metals can occur in several ways. A metal being heated to a sufficiently high temperature, emission will occur. This is known as primary or thermionic emission. Secondary emission is that which occurs when high-velocity electrons or ions strike and knock out other electrons.

Emission may also occur when light strikes a material and gives up energy that liberates electrons, this is known as photoemission. Thermionic and secondary emissiong are of most importance in ordinary vacuum tubes.

Theory of Emission. In any conductor there is a large number of free electrons moving around with various velocities. The temperature of the conductor increasing, the average velocity of the free electrons increases too.

Crisis over Cuba

Cuba is an island nation only ninety miles from the coast of the United States. In 1959 a revolutionary reformer named Fidel Castro took over his government. Cuba's banks, railroads, sugar plantations and many other businesses were owned by Americans at this time.

Castro needed money to make changes in Cuba. To obtain it he began to take over American-owned businesses. In the opinion of the United States government this was stealing American property. Not only this, but Castro seemed to be organizing a communist state right on the doorstep of the United States.

In I960 the American government agreed to give weapons and ships to refugees from Cuba who wanted to overthrow Castro.

On April 17, 1961, a force of 1,400 anti-Castro Cubans landed on Cuba's south coast. Castro asked the Soviet Union for help. Khrushchev sent him shiploads of rifles, tanks, and aircraft. President Kennedy grew worried and ordered a close watch to be kept on Cuba.

On October 14, 1962, an American U-2 spy plane flew high over the island taking photographs. They showed Russian missile launching sites being built. Kennedy was shocked by the U-2 photographs. He ordered American ships and aircraft to set up a blockade. They were to stop any Soviet ships carrying more missile equipment to Cuba.

Kennedy then told Khrushchev to take away the Soviet missiles and destroy the bases. He warned that any missile fired from Cuba would be treated as a direct Soviet attack on the United States and ordered 156 long-range missiles aimed at the Soviet Union to be made ready to fire.

For ten terrifying days in October 1962, the world trembled on the edge of nuclear war. People waited in fear for the next news flash on their radios and televisions. Finally Khrushchev ordered his technicians in Cuba to destroy the launching sites and return the missiles to the Soviet Union. In return, Kennedy called off the blockade and promised to leave Cuba alone. The most dangerous crisis of the Cold War was over.
