Analysis of the poem "Goldfish" by Balmont

A poem by K.D. Balmont "Golden Fish" is elegiac, lyrical and melodic. Who else but he, one of the most romantic poets of Russian culture, could so sensitively turn a thought into a word, reviving it, forcing it to play in the light of lights, like the scales of a real goldfish? Yes, and this image was not chosen by chance. From childhood, we all know that a magic fish is able to fulfill wishes, even if only in fairy tales, but growing up, we keep hoping for a miracle. This is characteristic of all sensitive souls, as well as the poet himself.

The work was published in 1903 and was included in the collection "Only Love" - ​​how unusual for those times, isn't it? Then, at the dawn of the revolution, exhausted by wars and tsarist repressions, ordinary peasants, workers and people of culture desired change, sang the spirit of the revolution, society literally lived in the heat of the harbinger of change. And, seemingly out of place, this collection appears, extolling completely different values. "Harmony, love, hope" - that's what the then man lacked, the poet thought, and therefore he cultivated these truths in his work. By that time, Balmont was very disappointed and battered by life in his state, he wanted to move away from his previous work, breathe new life into it, and through it - notes of magic into the most ordinary reality.

The poem presents two worlds that seem to penetrate each other: a ball that takes place in the castle, and a garden with a pond where a goldfish swims. Feelings arise between people at the festival, sparks ignite, and the author wants to personify these feelings, conveying them with the help of a "guide" - a fish: "But from the fish ... Music sounded." No one sees her: neither the musicians nor the guests, but she is somewhere, floating in her pond-kingdom, indestructible and eternal, under the moon. Every person deep down believes in miracles, even if he has a pragmatic mindset. However, children's fairy tales and legends leave their imprint on all of us. What can we say about romantic and creative natures, to which, no doubt, the Russian poet Konstantin Balmont belonged? Therefore, it is not surprising that among his works one can find fairy tale poems, which for many are a message from the distant past, from the wonderful world of childhood, in which we were all happy.

In 1903, Balmont published the poem "Goldfish", which does not fit into the general literary trend at all. However, the collection “Only Love” itself does not fall under the definition of a book with advanced life views. This is not surprising, because it was during this period that Balmont reconsiders his life priorities and comes to the conclusion that the revolution is evil. Not only specifically for him, who became a victim of tsarist repressions, but also for the whole people, who risk losing even the crumbs they have.

Therefore, it is quite clear that Balmont no longer wants to be a harbinger of social cataclysms and a fighter for justice.
