Last Sunday, I woke up and found a message on my phone from a colleague: "Lisa was born on May 4 at 4 am. Very beautiful, of course. We feel good. We sleep." And I slept in those same Sunday 4 am. I was sleeping, Lisa was being born, and my colleague was doing her list of 100 things to do in life.

In the summer of 2009, the same colleague and I watched a video with 15 tips from Jim Lafferty about the effectiveness of work and personal life. In tip number 11, he talked about life purpose and mission. And while I love concepts as much as I do, this hackneyed idea from Stephen Covey about visualizing your 80th birthday or your tombstone has never completely stuck with me. Jim, on the other hand, says that all these missions are bullshit - in fact, every person strives for the same thing - to live a fulfilling life. Yes, yes, it's all clear. How? Jim's answer (borrowed from Lou Holtz, famous American football coach): List of 100 things you want to do in life. Based on the calculation that the average age is 80 years, it turns out about two cases per year. And this is already a specific plan for the very "filling" of life.

We were inspired by the idea and started writing our lists. On Sunday, after I heard about Lisa's birth, I wanted to share what I've learned in five years of keeping a list of 100 things to do.

1. It's cool, but not so easy

Unlike the tedious shmisses, writing 100 cases is just fun. Fun and very challenging, let me tell you. Jim has been writing his list for 4 years, mine now only has 61 items (6 of them crossed out). You start by writing the usual writing a book, skydiving, going to Antarctica (hmmm, I need to check if I have an item about Antarctica on my list), and after a dozen, two at most, you run out of ideas. So don't set out to write the list in one fell swoop - prolong the fun.

2. You need to write down everything

When I first saw the list of Lisa's mother (and she approached the issue with less perfectionism and wrote almost a hundred items), I wrinkled my nose. "Lists-lists," I thought, "But putting "to have a daughter" on the list of things is too much, because everything depends not only on you." Despite the fact that a long time ago I promoted the theory: thought is material. Now I boldly declare: you need to write whatever you want, and you think is right. Getting married and having a daughter is on my list! And Lisa was lucky that her mother was not as picky as I am.

3. Lick but don't copy

If you started writing a list and quickly stalled, then you can, of course,. After reading several of these sites, I really remembered some of my desires. But I wouldn't recommend getting too hung up on it. Firstly, it reduces the drive from the process much more. Secondly, it is often a list of "100 things to do in life" and not "100 things to do for the rest of your life." And those are two big differences. Well, "hate yourself and then love again" and "take a picture of the sky" are all good things, of course, but my 100 to-do list is about something else. In addition, they must be real and yours, and the Internet is not the most faithful assistant here.

4. The list should be accessible and convenient

I started by jotting down all my ideas in a note file in Outlook, and recently moved it to Evernote. For me, the most important thing is that at any time I can return to what I have written, cross out a point or add something new. My colleague started with a list on a piece of paper (if someone likes the paper approach, then), and then switched to Excel format, where she writes everything, including pearl earrings in a wish list, and notes with colors what is done.
