The historical personality of Roksolan. Interesting Turkey

The word "roksolana" used to be a household word. In the east, they were called slaves who were of Slavic origin.

However, for one of these captives, it turned into a proper name. So the Europeans called one of the outstanding women, who managed to become the official wife of the Turkish Sultan from concubines, to participate in the management of the empire.

The details of Roksolana's life before the Turkish captivity are known only from works of art, it is difficult to judge whether they are real.

According to literary sources, at birth her surname is Lisovskaya, her patronymic is Gavrilovna. Opinions differ about the name, they call her either Anastasia or Alexandra. The most common option is Anastasia. She was born at the very beginning of the 16th century in Western Ukraine, in the small town of Rogatin, located not far from Ternopil. Her father was a priest.

The first half of the 16th century was marked for Ukraine by a time of great sorrow. Along its roads, the Turkish and allied Tatar invaders drove the captives to a large slave market, located in the Crimean city of Cafe, today Feodosia. After that, the slaves were transported by sea to Istanbul. Among them was Anastasia - the future wife of the Sultan.

The road to the harem

It is assumed that the girl got into the Sultan's harem at the age of 15. Noticing her unparalleled beauty, the human dealers realized that they could sell her with great profit in Istanbul. Therefore, she, like other especially “valuable” girls, was not driven on foot, but was transported under guard on horseback, without tying her hands, so as not to damage her delicate skin. The beautiful captive was transported to Istanbul on a felucca, accompanied by her current owner.

By the will of fate, on the first day of the sale, the vizier Suleiman I, the all-powerful Ottoman sultan, drew attention to Anastasia. Rustem Pasha, struck by the girlish beauty, decided to present it to the padishah as a gift. Upon learning of this, the merchant decided to give it to the Sultan himself as a sign of admiration for his power. This fact subsequently played a role in the rise of the concubine. According to existing customs, she could not become the legal wife of the ruler if she was bought for money.

Meeting with Suleiman I

Once in the palace, the girl immediately received the nickname Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska, which translates from Persian as cheerful, smiling, and laughing. It later became her name.

Being very quick-witted, Roksolana from the very beginning, using her mind and cunning, tried to charm the Sultan. And she succeeded.

When the slaves performed a dance in front of the new master, Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska pushed one of the girls away and, taking the most prominent place, sang loudly. It was a very daring act, for which she could have been killed. But the Sultan reacted favorably to this. He was surprised by the unprecedented courage and fascinated by the freshness and beauty. Roksolana received a handkerchief as a gift from the Sultan, which was a sign that she was invited that same evening to his bedroom.

Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska - the history of self-improvement

Subsequently, Suleiman realized that Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska is not a frivolous girl who can only laugh, sing and dance. When he asked Roksolana what she would like, she asked permission to visit the palace library, which greatly surprised the Sultan.

Roksolana read a lot and studied languages. She wrote books, dedicated poems to her lover, who from now on spent all nights with her. All this did not please the surrounding courtiers, who began to call her a witch who bewitched their master.

Over time, Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska:

  • mastered Turkish, Persian and Arabic;
  • perfected in the art of dance and recitation;
  • learned to play by the strict rules of male courtiers;
  • accepted the Muslim faith.

Life at court in an atmosphere of constant intrigue contributed to the development of the abilities of a psychologist, helping to study others well and predict their actions. As a result, for the Sultan, she became a valuable adviser in matters of government.

Wedding

In 1530, the wedding of the Turkish Sultan and Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska took place. This case was unique to the Ottomans because the bride was a concubine. The ceremony was staged with unprecedented pomp - even for the ruler of the empire.

At night, a general procession was organized along the illuminated streets with decorated houses. Music sounded, subjects were in an enthusiastic state.

A platform was erected on the square, on which various competitions were held, where Christian knights and Muslim warriors took part. After that, fakirs, tightrope walkers, trainers with wild animals performed. Among the animals there were also such outlandish ones as giraffes.

Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and other concubines were also present at the celebration. However, not everyone was privy to the cause of these celebrations.

Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska became a sultana

As a legal wife, Roksolana continued to please the Sultan. Like a true woman, she knew when to remain silent, and when to smile or feel sad. She introduced innovations into the daily life of the harem, which became the focus of not only beauty, but also art and education.

Suleiman and Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska did not stop enjoying each other. But now they not only talked about love, art and dedicated poems to each other. More and more often, the topic of their conversations was politics. In addition, she, as a co-ruler of Suleiman, began to be recognized not only at court, but also in other countries. Roksolana allowed great liberties- she went out to people, revealing her face. However, this did not prevent her from gaining the respect of Muslims. There was always a smile on her face.

First conversions

One of the first was the instruction of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska:

  • to build new barracks for the Janissaries, which looked like palaces;
  • increase the salaries of the military;
  • give them extra privileges.

When Sultan Suleiman went to Persia to pacify the rebels, he left the state treasury empty. His wife, not at a loss, ordered the opening of shops for the sale of wine in the quarter where immigrants from Europe lived, as well as in areas adjacent to the ports. This helped to fill the gaps in the budget, and also allowed the ruler to deepen the bays and reconstruct the piers.

Soon, more and more ships with goods from all over the world began to approach the Turkish shores - light, medium and large. The capital's shopping malls grew "by leaps and bounds."

Further reign of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska Sultan

Now the sultana had enough funds to:

  • build new mosques;
  • build minarets;
  • set up nursing homes;
  • open hospitals.

Returning from the next military campaign, Suleiman did not recognize not only some urban areas, but also his own rebuilt palace. In addition to the ability to commercial enterprises, Roksolana was famous for her virtue, was the patroness of the arts, corresponded with foreign rulers - Venice, Persia, Poland.

The Sultan went to war again and again, constantly "pushing" the boundaries of the empire. And his beloved wife sent him letters full of deep tenderness. In them, she spoke about the inhuman, limitless emotional pain that breakups bring her. The Sultan answered with great warmth, calling Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska the mistress of his heart, the only and most beautiful of women. So Nastya Lisovskaya became the beloved wife of Suleiman the Magnificent, whose help and advice he needed no less than in her arms.

Along the razor's edge

Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska gave birth to Suleiman five sons and one daughter. She named her first son, who became her most beloved, Selim, in honor of Sultan Selim I, his grandfather. My grandfather's nickname was Terrible. It was about such a sultan in the face of her son that Roksolana dreamed of. But the official heir was Mustafa - the son of the ruler of the Brilliant Porte (as diplomats called the Ottoman Empire) from his first wife.

It was this fact that made the position of the sultana fragile. To strengthen him, she had to either make Selim the heir, or put him on the throne. Roksolana was afraid that Suleiman would be seized by a new passion for some beautiful odalisque, whom he would marry. In this case, the fate of her and her children would be, to put it mildly, unenviable. There were cases when a wife or a concubine, objectionable to the padishah, was placed in a leather bag along with a poisonous snake and an angry cat, then the bag was tied up, and the victim was thrown into the waters of the Bosphorus.

Cunning or struggle for survival?

After waiting almost a decade and a half, Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska began active work in order to proclaim her beloved Selim as Suleiman's heir. First of all, she removed a prominent figure, vizier Ibrahim, from the road. In 1536, he was accused of dangerous sympathy for the French kingdom and strangled by order of the Sultan. In his place, not without the participation of Roksolana, Rustem Pasha was put, on whom she staked.

For him, Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska gave her daughter Mihrimah, who at that time was only 17, while the newly minted vizier was 39. Rustem was a person very close to the padishah, but the main thing was that he was the mentor of the heir - Mustafa. With the help of her son-in-law, Roksolana managed to convince the Sultan that Mustafa, together with the Serbs, is preparing a conspiracy against him. It was not difficult for him to believe this, since plots to overthrow the rulers were, one might say, commonplace in the East.

Victims of intrigue

According to the testament of the Prophet Muhammad, it is forbidden to shed the blood of the first persons of the state and their heirs. Therefore, the Sultan gave the order to strangle with a silk cord not only Mustafa, but also all his brothers, as well as his grandchildren. Their mother and grandmother Gulbeher, not having survived the tragedy, was moved by her mind and soon left this world.

She was later followed by Rustem Pasha, who completed the mission assigned to him by Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska. To do this, she used her daughter, who followed her husband. The sultana brought to Suleiman the genuine statements of Rustem Pasha and his associates about the sultan, which had a negative connotation. This information was given to her by Mihrimah. This, just as in the case of Mustafa, was presented as a conspiracy, and fell on fertile ground of suspicion and fear of losing unlimited power. As a result, the vizier lost his head.

The fight goes on

There is an opinion that not without the help of Roksolana, the mother of the Sultan, who had a great influence on him, also passed away. She tried to open her son's eyes to the intrigues of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska Sultan. About a month after the memorable conversation, she died, according to one version, from poison poured into her food.

Forty years after the wedding of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and Suleiman, the woman managed to become the first wife and proclaim Selim the heir. However, the sacrifices did not end there. The two younger sons of the ruler were strangled. Some historians attribute these murders to Roksolana, explaining such cruel measures by her desire to strengthen the position of her favorite Selim.

But evidence of the involvement of the sultana today does not exist. But there is evidence that the number of killed sons of Suleiman I, born from other wives and numerous concubines, is approaching forty.

Cause of Roksolana's death

Roksolana was not destined to see her first son on the throne of the padishah. The beloved woman of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent died of a cold and was buried with honors. According to some sources, this happened in 1558, according to others - in 1561, according to others - in 1563. Her stone tomb is located near one of the majestic monuments of the Ottoman Empire - the Suleiman Mosque in Istanbul. Suleiman also rests nearby.

Selim, son of Hürrem Sultan, was on the throne for eight years. His life cannot be called an example for devout Muslims. His weakness was the immoderate use of alcoholic beverages, so in history he remained under the name of Selima the drunkard. One of the historians called him an alcoholic, a degenerate and a hard-hearted despot. His reign was disastrous for Turkey, it was the beginning of the fall of the Sublime Porte.

The fate of Roksolana-Hyurrem was a fate as great as it was tragic. On the one hand - the fiery love of a powerful ruler, power, on the other - the daily struggle for survival.

  • It so traditionally happened that everyone is sure that the sultana was from Ukraine and her name was Anastasia in her homeland, that she was from the family of a priest.

When the Turks once again attacked the Ukrainian lands, this sad fate did not bypass her village either. The girl was very pretty, young, virgin. Therefore, of all the captives, she became the most valuable. For such in the slave markets they gave a good price. But, she was not sold, but presented to the harem of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. In the future, this allowed her to become the official wife of Suleiman.

  • But where she comes from, what her name was before the girl converted to Islam, in what year she was born - there is no exact information, they have not reached us.

There are memoirs of Western ambassadors of that time who describe her appearance, praise her mind, write that she comes from present-day Western Ukraine. Those places were then called Roksolania,
hence the name Roksolana.

We know much more about her life in the harem.

Now imagine what kind of rivalry for the attention of Suleiman took place in the harem.

It had the most beautiful girls from all over the world. Before appearing before the Sultan, they were taught not only the art of love, but also dancing, playing musical instruments, versification, writing, reading. For that time they were not badly educated.

And yet, by the time Roxalana appeared in the palace, Suleiman already had a beloved Circassian wife Mahidevran and a son from her, who was the heir to the throne. In terms of their mentality, the traditions of the harem were closer to Mahidevran. In addition, she had an ally - the vizier
Ibrahim, Valide, the mother of the Sultan, was favorable to her.

And then a girl from Ukraine appeared (in any case, from the lands of this region). Slavic in spirit, Christian in religion. Historians suggest that she was 15 years old at that time. She
got into a linguistic environment alien to her with a different religion, culture, traditions, way of life.

You know, it’s hard to believe that an unprepared person could achieve what Hürrem did:

She defeated the harem - with his elder wife, valide, other relatives and concubines.

She became not just the only woman, but a wife! For several centuries, the sultans of the Ottoman Empire did not have official wives.

She perfectly implemented cunning plans not only at the harem level, but at the state level. Roxalana was able to replace objectionable statesmen with her allies. It was imperative that one of her sons, and not the first son of Suleiman, take the throne after the death of his father.

She won the love of the people by spending huge amounts of money on charity.

Muslims recognized her as one of the same faith. For a person who changed his faith to Muslim, in those days this is truly a great recognition. Not to mention the fact that she appeared in public with her face uncovered. This is unheard of behavior.

Do you know many Muslim women from the harem, even the Sultan's, who would gain respect and admiration among the ruling circles of Europe? At the time of Roksolana, no one even knew the name of the beloved concubine of the Ottoman ruler. BUT we learned about Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska precisely from the records, left by the Hamburg ambassador.

Tell me, how can all this be achieved without prior preparation?

I believe that the appearance of Roksolana in Suleiman's life was someone's well-thought-out plan. She was helped, supported and guided. Yes, she was very strong with her apparent fragility, very smart with all her lightness and cheerful character.

She did a great job to achieve her goal, and amassed quite a few well-wishers and enemies.

  • She died at an estimated age of 43. The cause of death is not fully known. Information has reached our days that Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska was sick before her death. But, it can be like a reaction to poison (the poison was poisoned slowly or the poison was of such an effect that it manifested itself after some time).

One of the tasks of the Show "Battle of Psychics" was to determine why Roksolana died.

Moreover, psychics did not know who they were talking about, they were told this already at the end of the test. This was done for the purity of the experiment. Here are the two responses that really impressed me:

  1. The fact that this woman is accused of murdering a young man, which she did not commit, was not organized. The fact is, Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska is credited with an intrigue, as a result of which Selim, the first son of the Sultan and the main heir, was executed. She thus cleared the way for her sons. The psychic said that the mother of this poor fellow started an intrigue to frame Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska, and everything turned against her own son.
  2. That the cause of Roksolana's death was a fish that had been stored for a long time in some kind of reservoir with bad water, that she was specially fed with it.

Either way, we'll probably never know the truth. Too little information about the life of the rulers of the Ottoman Empire has survived to this day. We know even less about harem life.

Only one thing is known for certain, Suleiman was very upset by the loss of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska: he was very sick physically and suffered mentally. He removed luxury from his life and almost did not communicate with anyone.

The wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent was the one and only woman who left such a mark on the history of the Ottoman Empire.

The most famous is Mahidevran's attack on Hürrem, when she scratched the girl's face and tore her clothes. After that, as soon as Suleiman found out about such an act of the former favorite, he became very angry and made Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska the most beloved and important concubine in the harem.

Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska Sultan (Titian, c. 1550)

As you know, the social status of a concubine did not satisfy an ambitious and demanding woman. Many writers have claimed that she has been looking for an approach and a way to marry Suleiman for a long time. And eventually found it. First, she asked the Sultan to instruct her in the Muslim religion. Suleiman saw no objection and took care of her religious education. After that, she told him that she would like to become a Muslim. Changes in religious principles from Christianity to Islam made the ruler happy. And after changing her religious views, she told him that the new religion would not allow her to have sexual relations with a man she was not married to. According to Ottoman historiographers, her plan worked - Suleiman resisted for three days, and then, against all laws, married her.

Biography

What was the name and where Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska came from remains a mystery to historians. The real name of the Sultan's concubine is Alexander Roksolana. According to one ambassador, the girl received an unusual nickname during the existence of the Commonwealth in honor of the Polish city of Roksolania or the Roksolani tribe, inhabitants of the Northern Black Sea region.

Origin

A girl was born in 1502 (according to some reports in 1505) in Western Ukraine in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, the village of Rogatin in the family of an Orthodox priest. This version is followed in fiction. According to the writers, the beloved of the Sultan was named Anastasia Lisovskaya. She was the daughter of the priest Gavrila Lisovsky.

Modern sources do not contain information about the girl's childhood, they only mention Russian origin. The life of the Slavic beauty changed dramatically, in the future the girl played an important role and was of great importance for world history.

Sultan's prisoner

Historical facts testify that in 1517 (or in 1522) the Crimean Tatars raided Western Ukraine. During the capture, gold, valuables, food were confiscated from the population, and the abduction of girls was widespread.

At the age of 15, Anastasia was taken prisoner and, after several resales, ended up in the harem of Suleiman the Great. At that time, the Sultan was 26 years old. He acted as crown prince and held a state post in Manisa, but had not yet ascended the throne of the Ottoman Empire. After Roksolana became a concubine, she received the name Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska, which means "merry" in Persian.

What the Slavic beauty Roksolana actually looked like is shown in the portrait.

According to the horoscope, Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska was born under the zodiac sign of Sagittarius or Scorpio. People born in this constellation have a courageous character. This was exactly the beloved woman of the Sultan.

Suleiman I the Magnificent and his family

Suleiman I the Magnificent was the 10th Sultan and the 89th Caliph. Considered the greatest ruler, under him the Ottoman Porta reached its peak of development.

The years of Suleiman's life in historical sources indicate different. Most often, 2 dates of birth are prescribed: 11/06/1494 and 04/27/1495. Born in Trabzon. The father was shehzade Selim. Mother - Aishe Hafsa, daughter of the Crimean Khan Mengli I Giray.

After the coronation, Suleiman freed several hundred Egyptian captives who came from noble families. He was an uncompromising fighter against bribery, erected schools, grandiose buildings. During his reign, the Suleymaniye Mosque, the second largest in Istanbul, was built. This is an example of the Ottoman style for many centuries.

The personal life of the ruler was eventful. There were 4 concubines in his harem. The first Fulane in 1512 gave birth to a son, Mahmud, who died in 1521 from smallpox. The woman died in 1550.

The second concubine was Gulfem Khatun, the mother of Murad's son, who also died in 1521. The Sultan had no more children with Gulfem-Khatun. They were friends for a long time, until, by order of the ruler, she was strangled in 1562.

The third concubine is Mahidevran Sultan, her second nickname is Gulbahar, which translates as "spring rose". By origin - Circassian. Suleiman and Mahidevran had several children. Her son Mustafa is executed on charges of conspiracy during the war against the Persians. The concubine was sent to Bursa, where she lived until 1580-1581. She was buried next to her son Mustafa in the mausoleum.

The special position of the favorite

Lisovskaya was a special favorite of the ruler. After arriving at the harem, a girl with a pleasant appearance earned the favor of Suleiman. The relationship between the lovers of the ruler was tense: the girls entered into conflicts, started fights.

An important moment is described in the historical chronicles, thanks to which Hürrem became the favorite of the Sultan. The girl had a fight with another concubine Mahidevran. The reason for the conflict is jealousy. Roksolana was injured, her dress was torn to shreds. After the fight, the girl was invited to the ruler's bedchamber, where she spoke about the conflict. As a result, Suleiman declared Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska his favorite concubine.

After receiving a special status, the girl asked for permission to visit the personal library of the ruler, to read books. Soon she was talking with the Sultan on any topic from culture to politics. Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska dedicated dances and poems to her beloved. Easily crowded out rivals who claimed the love of the prince.

Strictness reigned in the relationship between the Sultan and Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska. Suleiman did not tolerate glances in the direction of his wife. For noticed sympathy, he immediately sentenced men to death. Despite the firmness of character, Roksolana has always been the keeper of the hearth and a good mother.

Wedding

The romance of the Sultan and the concubine took place in front of others. According to established canons, there was a ban on the conclusion of such a marriage. However, in 1530 a significant event took place - the conclusion of a marriage union, which became an isolated case in Turkey. Previously, the Sultan had no right to marry a concubine. The title of haseki (beloved wife) was introduced only for Roksolana.

The wedding celebration was staged on an unprecedented scale: the streets were decorated with decorations, musicians played everywhere. There was a chic performance from rooms with wild animals, tightrope walkers and magicians.

Children

Hammam Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska Sultan gave birth to several children from Suleiman I the Great. The continuation of the family line was the main task for the Ottoman ruler after the sons of the previous concubines died.

Mehmed

After the conclusion of the marriage union, the Sultan and Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska had an important event - the appearance of the first child, Mehmed. The boy had a difficult fate. He died at the age of 22 from smallpox.

Abdullah

2 years after the birth of the first-born Mehmed, the second son Abdullah was born. The child died at 3 years old.

Selim

After Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska gave Sultan Sehzade Selima. This child was able to become the sole heir to the throne of the Ottoman Empire. Selim survived his father and mother.

Bayezid

Bayazid appeared fourth in a row in the royal family. The boy's life ended tragically. After the death of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska, there was a rebellion: Bayezid opposed his elder brother Selim, the ruler of the empire. This case angered his father, Bayezid fled with his family, but was soon found and executed.

cihangir

The youngest heir was Dzhihangir, born with a congenital pathology - hunchback. However, despite the disadvantage, he developed intellectually, was fond of poetry. Cihangir died at the age of 17-22.

Mihrimah Sultan - beloved daughter

The only daughter of Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska and the ruler is Mihrimah Sultan.

The girl grew up in great parental love and care. Mihrimah received an education, was engaged in charitable activities. Thanks to the merits of the girl, 2 mosques were built by the architect Xian.

Mihrimah Sultan died at the age of 56 and was buried in a tomb next to her father. She alone of all the children was so honored.

Mahidevran - confrontation between concubines

Mahidevran - Shehzade Mustafa's mother, a slave of Circassian or Albanian origin.

A conflict arose between the concubine Mahidevran and Alexandra Anastasia Lisowska - a quarrel with a fight. The woman was the owner and could not stand the rivalry among the concubines. Kesem was considered the main woman in the Sultan's harem, and the slaves had to obey her.

However, Roksolana, upon arrival in the harem, did not submit to Makhidevran and became the fatal seducer of the ruler. The women hated each other. What happened? The report of the Venetian ambassador Bernardo Navagero says that in 1533 there was a nonsense. Mahidevran fought with Roksolana. Soon the sultan found out about the incident, who became angry and wanted to expel his first wife. However, he changed his mind and after the first meeting made Hürrem his favorite.

Perhaps the reason for the fight was the emerald ring, presented by the Sultan to Roksolana. The great ruler made jewelry from gold and precious stones. However, this version is unknown - true or fiction, since it has no proven evidence.
