Teaching English for free. How to learn English at home (at home) on your own from scratch?

When teaching a foreign language, it should be taken into account that your knowledge should be divided into four areas:

  1. Reading.

When reading, new unfamiliar words and turns of phrases are necessarily encountered, the knowledge of which necessarily increases vocabulary. It should be noted that texts must be selected in accordance with their level of knowledge of the language. When choosing literature, not by level, a large number of incomprehensible words, phrases, idioms will dishearten anyone.

  1. Letter.

Written speech is complex from the point of view of spelling theory. It is also difficult to study the science of constructing sentences, in which you also need to choose one of the 16 forms of the verb.

To simplify learning, you should write yourself reminder notes, keep a personal diary describing all life events. The best option would be to find a pen pal. It is convenient to use social networks for these purposes.

  1. Oral speech.

Spoken English is formed by retelling the read text. In each lesson, new words and phrases should be added.

  1. Listening comprehension.

In order to understand English speech by ear, you need to communicate in it with other people.

In the learning process, special attention should be paid to communication in chats, via e-mails and by phone. By learning a language, in addition to knowledge, you can also significantly increase your IQ.

How to start learning English on your own?

With independent study of a foreign language, success in cognition directly depends on the chosen correct approach to learning.

To do this, you must follow the correct sequence of obtaining information:

  1. English alphabet.
  2. Transcription.
  3. Rules for reading English letters and their combinations. It is convenient to use the site Translate.ru.
  4. Replenishment of vocabulary. For efficiency, it is better to learn 10 words per lesson. Moreover, it is important that there is a correct pronunciation of these words. With self-study, no one can tell you this, so it’s convenient to contact the Lingvo.ru or Howjsay.com Internet service. Here you need to choose a set of words for learning, then run the program, listen to each word several times and repeat it after the speaker. 7. View news in English. To do this, you need to find an English-language service in the list of your television channels that will help you form vocabulary in an unobtrusive way. For reading, you can use the Newsinlevels.com news portal, where information is presented to readers, divided into several levels. It is important that each piece of news is accompanied by an audio recording, which will help to capture the nature of the pronunciation of certain words.
  8. When reading simple uncomplicated texts, visual memory is activated, at the same time, new words and phrases are memorized automatically.

In self-study of English, to ensure the effectiveness of classes, the process of their optimal organization is important.

  • set the duration of classes to one hour;
  • the frequency of lessons should not be less than 3 times a week;
  • the ideal rhythm of learning, taking into account the performance of additional tasks, is 30 minutes a day;
  • when working on speech skills in a foreign language, you should rewrite short texts, read newspaper articles and news;
  • it is important to find an interlocutor for practicing speaking skills;
  • all the knowledge gained should be immediately put into practice, while all words and grammatical structures should be tried to be used in oral and written speech.

It should be noted that ordinary cramming will not give an effective result without practical consolidation of knowledge.

Words need to be mastered in 10 pieces, according to the scheme:

  • learning words;
  • independent writing of a short story in such a way that all the words just learned are involved in it;
  • reading your own story;
  • retelling;
  • repetition of the past.

What can get in the way of learning English at home?

The main mistake of beginners to learn a language is:

  • dispersion in the supplied information;
  • an attempt to absorb a lot of information, to study a large amount of multidirectional material.

The result of the mistakes made can be a complete lack of progress in knowledge and a lack of desire in learning due to the confusion that has arisen in the abundance of information received and unprocessed by the brain.

At home, it can interfere with the study of a foreign language:

  1. Lack of proper motivation for language learning.

It is not worth learning a language because it is fashionable, or because they will not be hired without knowledge of a foreign language. It should be the basis for studying to make cognitive foundations that develop thinking that promotes career growth.

  1. Mismanagement of time.

This is especially true for the preparation of homework, which, as usual, is done immediately before class. It is necessary to break the task into several stages, for better assimilation. Do not try to cover huge amounts of information in one sitting.

When doing homework step by step, you should first of all pay attention to simple exercises that are easy to perform. In second place, you need to postpone tasks that require work with a dictionary.

  1. Fear of difficulties learning.

Wrong choice of methodology, which should be based on the individual characteristics of the ability to perceive information. Some are easier to remember by ear, and some should have a good example before their eyes. It is important to draw up the right training program, taking into account the form of information presentation.

  • Expert opinion– the teacher has the knowledge that will help you when passing the international test, since he himself has successfully passed this test and knows all the pitfalls, or he has experience in preparing students for a successful interview in English. The teacher understands from his own experience what you need to know and what to pay attention to.

How to speed up learning English with a teacher

So, what should you pay attention to if you want to quickly learn English with a teacher:

  • Choose the right teacher.

Find a teacher that you feel comfortable with. Choose the temperament that suits you best: an old school teacher - strict and demanding, or a person with a good sense of humor and energy. You won't get bored during these classes.

And do not forget that your teacher must have experience in the subject with which you approached him (passing international exams, preparing for interviews, etc.).

If you find your teacher, then you will definitely not abandon your classes and will continue to improve your foreign language to the level you need with pleasure.

  • Practice as often as possible.

Do not forget that you need to quickly and effectively prepare for an important event, so do not rush to relax. Study with a teacher 3-5 times a week, for 1-2 hours each time and devote the same amount of time to self-study. 50% of learning comes from doing your homework.

  • Always do your homework.

As we have already said, learning after class is an important part of the process, because when you repeat, you learn the material better. Ask your teacher to give you voluminous tasks to develop all your English skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. And do not forget about grammar and vocabulary exercises.

  • Practice with a native speaker.

If your level of English is Pre-Intermediate and above, then you can try your hand at communicating with native speakers. This will give you more confidence if you travel abroad or when you work with foreign partners. In class, you will have to speak only in English so that you are understood and you will learn how to paraphrase what you want to say.

If you are afraid to stay one-on-one with an American or a British, then you can always try your hand at group classes - Conversation Clubs.

How to speed up learning English on your own

  • Read more. Books, magazines, social media posts, articles: if they are in English, read them. They will help not only to diversify and hone the existing vocabulary, but also to learn new and useful information.
  • Learn words and expressions. Stick stickers with their names on all objects in the house (we also recommend reading about learning English at home). You will be surprised how many items in your apartment whose names you do not know. Stick names on room doors, appliances, and even cereal. Learn words and phrases from your favorite songs. The Genius website has not only words, but also explanations of the meaning of individual phrases of almost all popular songs.
  • Run tests. Tests not only test your knowledge, but also help you understand the misunderstood rule if there are comments on the tasks. Be sure to solve tests from the textbook you are studying from, as well as visit websites with grammar and vocabulary assignments.
  • Subscribe to podcasts and English YouTube channels. Podcasts are radio-style audio files on various topics. Find the ones that interest you and listen to them on your way to work or school. Also check out the English Youtube for interesting blogs. Try to choose channels with useful and interesting content. It may be difficult to understand native speakers at first, but don't stop! • Immerse yourself in the language environment. When planning your next vacation, think about English-speaking countries: England, USA, Canada, Malta, Australia and remember that abroad, instead of a hotel room, you can live with other people. Just practice your English and meet new and interesting people.
  • Consider studying abroad. Nothing will make you progress like taking a language course in a country where it is spoken. Take an English course abroad! You can go there with any level of language and at any age.

Such words will motivate you and give you confidence in your abilities.

Conclusion

It does not matter at all which way of learning English you choose: with a teacher or on your own. The main thing is understanding why you need a language, and what you want to achieve by getting the level you need.

Do not forget to use the language in everyday life as often as possible - this will help you not to lose your knowledge and skills. Follow our tips and you will quickly learn English. We are sure of it!

Big and friendly family EnglishDom

Be sure to warn you that you need to start not with the poems of Shakespeare and not even with the stories of Jack London. To improve your spoken English, first discover Alice in Wonderland or any fairy tales. In such literature, the language is simpler, which will allow you to feel how the level rises. Read books both in electronic form (electronic dictionaries can even help with translation) and in paper. At first, even fairy tales will seem difficult to you, but then you will see how easy it is to read in English, and how fast you are already reading.

Most modern players on your computer allow you to remove the Russian track in the film and watch the tape in English. To learn English and grammar, download subtitles for the movie (you can easily find them in a search engine by title) and paste them into the movie while watching (this can be easily done in Media player classic, Crystal Player, and many others). Stop the movie if you see an unfamiliar word or expression, look it up in the dictionary. You can write it out and then repeat the phrase several times. All this will allow you to speak English fluently.

3. Read English newspapers and use the English Internet

Reading newspapers is significantly different from reading books (both grammar and topics are more difficult). True, if you read English newspapers, watch English-language sites, this will give you the opportunity not only to keep abreast of events abroad, but also to understand how the language of English journalism sounds.

4. Go to a course or a tutor

I tried myself both there and there, so I know very well the disadvantages of each type of training. A tutor is an excellent tool for improving English grammar, because individual lessons always make you concentrate. However, courses will help to improve spoken English. With a tutor you are one on one, there is no feeling of spontaneous communication, group, while the courses allow not only to learn the vocabulary of the English language, but also to learn how to apply the grammar studied with the tutor.

5. Repeat

Remember how mothers teach their children to speak. Repetition of the same word several tens to hundreds of times, repetition of phrases, expressions. This is how any foreign language is mastered: there is no need to write out the darkness of words and memorize them. Just name all the surrounding objects in English. For example, imagine when you enter a store that you need to ask to see shoes not in your native Russian, but in English. Think over the phrase as you walk to the counter, repeat it to yourself several times. And every time now, when you approach the window, you will have exactly this, the right phrase, that will pop up.

6. Listen to audiobooks

Listening to audiobooks will help you learn spoken English quickly. As a rule, actors who read the text, place accents and stresses in the right places, speak clearly and correctly. You hear real live speech, however, it would be nice to have before your eyes the text that reads

7. Translate

Start translating books. Start small, and then by word, by preposition, translate more and more voluminous texts. This has several advantages at once: you will not only write out and learn new words, but also understand English grammar. Look up and write down everything that is not clear, and then find the answers in dictionaries or grammar books.

8. Speak up!

It may sound a little trite, but nothing will help you improve your level of English better than talking. Try to speak English even at home. If you want to eat, tell your family about it, first in English, and only then in Russian (if not everyone in the family speaks a foreign language). Try to even think in English when you walk or ride in transport.

9. Get a pen pal

This advice is similar to the previous one, but more productive. A friend from an English-speaking country will help you learn English. Get to know someone on ICQ if you don't have a friend in the US or UK. Chat with him, which will not only improve grammar, expand vocabulary, but also remove the language barrier.

It is important to just remember that English is, first of all, practice! Good luck!

How to learn English on your own at home for free? In this article you will receive self-study guide for a year based on research in psychology. PLUS learn a lot of interesting things about yourself, about how your brain works, how it “protects” you with the help of laziness. You know how to trick the brain to defeat laziness; how to find effective motivation. Admit it, because it is laziness that is the main culprit of the fact that you still have not learned English!

So let's get started. I assure you Not banal advice, but interesting reading awaits you!

Most likely you asked yourself why someone was able to learn English, and I started so many times and never learned. You won't believe how easy it is to master English and other languages, if you know a few secrets of psychology. I share with you, my dear readers, these secrets.

And you don't need any expensive courses! There is a simple and effective way to learn English online on your own for free. The article contains all the necessary links for free language learning!

From the studies of the famous psychologist Ebbinghaus, the conclusion was drawn: "To study English for 45-60 minutes is ineffective." The most effective exercise is 20 minutes.

Here is the first secret for you! It is most effective to practice for 20 minutes, preferably in the morning. Exercising for more than 20 minutes is absolutely useless!

You pay teachers for an individual lesson or a group lesson for 1 hour, and in fact, out of these 60 minutes, your attention is focused on the subject of language learning only at the beginning of the lesson for only 20 minutes!

Small steps rule!

Another trick from psychology. We all tend to take on "serious" new things. Therefore, having once again decided to start learning English, we sit with him for several days in a row for 2-3 hours.

But this leads to rejection, because our brain is programmed to "save" our energy. How can we trick our brains? Very simple: you need to use the rule of small steps.

Psychologists conducted an experiment, the experiment involved elderly people from 70 years old. They were doing push-ups DAILY for 5-10 minutes, first from the wall, then from the high cabinet, etc. By the end of the year, 90% of the participants in the experiment easily did push-ups from the floor several times.

The same with English!

Here is the second secret for you. Use the RULE OF SMALL STEPS. Practice English for only 20 minutes, BUT EVERY DAY, preferably in the morning. Scientists have found that new things are absorbed best in the morning.

Immersion matters - where can I get free podcasts?

It's hard to overestimate how important this is. Just do not say that immersion is possible only in case of moving to another country.

Here is a refutation of this thought, as well as an answer to the question "Is it really possible to learn English on your own?". Giuseppe Mezzofanti never left Italy and was fluent in 38 languages! He taught them himself!

So, the 3rd secret: not cramming the rules of the English language, but a simple and pleasant immersion in colloquial speech! But it's important to do it every day!
Now it is very easy to “organize” immersion in English speech for yourself with the help of:
  • LISTENING TO PODCASTS: I recommend podcasts from the British Cancel website learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/learnenglish-podcasts/. It's free! The podcasts are very informative, in which “native speakers” talk about the life of the British, their habits, etc. Podcasts are short, 10-20 minutes long. Listen to them every morning during your 20-minute session, as well as on the way to work, while walking or jogging. Podcast audio files can be downloaded to your phone or listened to online. There is also text (see Transcript). And several tasks for memorizing words, set expressions and sentence constructions.
  • READING SIMPLE TEXTS. You can start by reading short tourist reviews on booking.com or short useful articles on lifehack.org/lifestyle.
  • WATCHING MOVIES, VIDEOS TEDex on YouTube: this is another useful diving hack. We all watch movies and series. So accustom yourself to watch movies ONLY in English (with Russian subtitles). It's free! Here is a link to one of the films with subtitles on YouTube and such films - the sea! Just type "English movie with Russian subtitles" in the YouTube search bar.

How to learn English yourself? Yes, it is very simple - to immerse yourself in English speech.

Embedding a habit! Turn on "Pavlov's dog"

But how do you force yourself to get up in the morning every day 20 minutes earlier?

Here we will come to the aid of another brilliant invention of psychologists. This is another way that will help us trick our brains and defeat our laziness. You all remember the experiments with Pavlov's dog from school: they turn on a light bulb and give the dog food. This is repeated many times. The dog develops a conditioned reflex - the light bulb lights up and saliva begins to stand out (even if food was not given).

We "function" in exactly the same way as Pavlov's dog. Scientists have found that a person can easily and quickly build new useful habits into conditioned reflexes already “fixed” in the brain.

For example, we all have a well-established habit of brushing our teeth in the morning. So, before brushing your teeth, you can build in the habit of learning English for 20 minutes. Moreover, the habit will build in faster if you reinforce it with positive emotions: “Hurrah, my favorite morning podcasts!” or something like that.

Secret 4: Use this psychological tool and build the habit of studying English in the morning for 20 minutes BEFORE CLEANING YOUR TEETH! And these classes, as mentioned above, are not boring cramming the rules, but listening to podcasts from the site British Council, reading the text of the podcast and doing some exercises. BUT build the habit of watching movies in the evening or serials in English, and on the way to work and in training, jogging, also listen to podcasts in English.

Watch this video for helpful tips on how to build any good habit before a habit developed over the years and reinforced by a conditioned reflex:

Vocabulary! How many words do you need to learn?

Here is good news for you! 82% of the most common spoken English phrases are made up of 1,000 English words.

Memorize 1 new word a day. In a year you will learn 300-400 English words. And in 3 years you will know and use 1000 English words!

The 5th secret is to learn 1 new word a day. Again, psychology comes to the rescue. To memorize words, use the NEUROCONNECT METHOD (picture + association). What is it and how does it work?

We learn a new word, for example "probably". Association: “About a woman?”, Draw a “woman”, write a word in English. I recommend using homemade flashcards when learning new words. On the one hand, write the word in English, on the other side of the card - this is the word in Russian and the picture-association.

It is important to repeat words - sort through the cards every day, for example, at work, instead of a smoke break.

Need motivation, internal or external

External motivation: take yourself "on the weak" - conclude an agreement with a friend and pay a fine for missing classes.

Intrinsic motivation: the desire to travel or the desire to work in a foreign company or the desire to move to live in another country or the desire to get married, etc.

And again we turn to psychology: in both types of motivation there is a weak point. MOTIVATION WORKS ONLY 100 HOURS if you don't back it up with daily victories.

Those. motivation does not work for more than 100 hours if you do not back it up with daily victories. What to do? Get yourself a personal diary and write down your victories in it every day: how many words you learned, what expression or joke you liked, what series in English you started watching, etc.

You probably knew about the importance of motivation and its constant weakening, it's not a secret 😉

Summary

Learning a new language is a difficult task, but quite doable. Learning any language can be broken down into four parts: reading, writing, listening and speaking. If you want to learn English faster, start with the first step below.

Steps

Part 1

Game Methods

    Read, read, read. One of the easiest steps you can take to learn English faster is to read as much as possible. Read constantly. This will increase your vocabulary, help you learn grammar and get to know slang.

    • Read comics. If you don't want to read children's books, read comics. You can buy many comics in English in bookstores or online, or read them for free online (these are usually called webcomics).
    • Read books that you are familiar with. You can also read a book that you have read before. If you are already aware of what is happening in the book, it will be easier for you to guess and understand the meanings of words.
    • Read newspapers. Reading newspapers is a good way to learn the basics of a language because they usually have very good grammar and are easy to understand. You can find online versions of many good English newspapers such as the New York Times or The Guardian.
  1. Watch movies. Watching movies will also help you improve your English. This allows you to hear how a particular word sounds and also helps you learn new words. You can start watching movies with subtitles, but without subtitles, you will learn more. If you have a basic vocabulary, try not to use subtitles, but focus on listening to words you already know and guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context.

    Play MMO games. MMO games are games that you play with other people over the internet. You can play with people from English-speaking countries, which will give you the opportunity to talk with them and learn the language from them. Try playing Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, or The Elder Scrolls Online.

    Find a pen pal online. Penfriends learn your language when you write letters to them and they reply. You write half of the letter in your own language so your friend can practice it and half in English so you can practice your English. You can talk about whatever you want! There are many websites that can help you find a pen pal.

    Get some friends. You can just make friends with a person from an English speaking country and chat with them via email or skype to practice your English. You can find friends by joining a community of interest, or through language learning communities like Fluentify.

    Sing songs. Singing songs is another good way to improve your English. This will help you get familiar with the sounds of the English language (rhymes will help with pronunciation). Learning songs will also help improve your vocabulary. Find a song you like, learn it and find out what the words mean.

    Part 2

    Serious studies
    1. Sign up for courses. English courses will help you learn the most important words and grammar and help you make sure you do everything right. There are two main ways to take English courses:

      • Get busy on the internet. You can take courses online. Some of them cost money and some are free. Courses that cost money can be better than free ones, but that's not always the case! Good examples of online programs are Livemocha and Duolingo.
      • Get involved in an educational institution. You can take a course at a local university or language school. They cost money, but a teacher's help will be very helpful and will help you learn English faster than if you were trying to learn it on your own.
    2. Keep a diary. This will force you to practice writing and build up your vocabulary. It will also force you to practice building new sentences instead of just repeating phrases you already know. You can record everything that happened during the day. You can also keep a small journal where you write down new words as you hear or see them.

      Travel to an English speaking country. Visiting a country where everyone speaks English will help you learn it much faster. Find a part-time job or enroll in a training course in an English-speaking country. You can also make short trips, but immersion in the language environment for at least 3 months will have the best result.

      Engage in self-education. Of course, you can study English on your own. To quickly learn English on your own, you need to make this activity the most important thing for you. Devote all your free time to learning English and use your English as often as possible.

      Take advantage of online resources. There are many online resources to help English learners. They range from word card-type programs to mobile phone applications. Try ANKI (flashcards), Memrise (flashcards and more), or Forvo (pronunciation guide).

      Immerse yourself in the language environment. Language immersion is one of the best ways to learn a language. This means that you must study English every day for at least 3 hours a day. One hour a week is not enough. It is best to spend at least 6 hours a day to listen, write and speak English.
