Some linguists, in addition to the anatomical and physiological derivatives, add another social derivative, namely, the word that a woman of easy virtue is called. Of course, there are other obscene roots, but these four are the most productive and effective among the people.

Delight, surprise, consent and more

Perhaps the most frequently used word among profanity, the word that is most often written on fences throughout Russia, refers to the male sexual organ. Linguists have not agreed on a common opinion about where this word came from. Some experts attribute Old Slavic roots to the word, arguing that in ancient times it meant “hide” and sounded like “how to”. And the word "forge" in the imperative mood sounded like "forge". Another theory attributes the word to Proto-Indo-European roots. In which the root "hu" meant "process".
Today it is extremely difficult to talk about the persuasiveness of each of the theories. The word denoting the female genital organs is less productive in Russian obscene vocabulary than the word - the representative of the stronger sex. Nevertheless, this word gave the Russian language quite a lot of expressions that reflect the severity of Russian reality in the best possible way. So, words with the same root from this well-known word often mean: lie, mislead, beat, steal, talk incessantly. Set expressions, as a rule, denote a course of events that does not unfold according to plan, an educational process, a fight, a beating, failure, and even a breakdown or death.
The origin of this word, some especially fierce linguists attribute to Sanskrit. However, this theory does not withstand even the most humane criticism. The most convincing theory, the researchers consider the origin of the Proto-Indo-European languages. There, according to scientists, the words with the same root as the second most popular word in Russian mat meant “saddle”, “what they sit on”, “garden” and “nest”. It is also worth noting that this word can have both a strictly negative connotation and a positive one.

About sexual intercourse and not only about it

The word that today in obscene vocabulary means sexual intercourse comes from the Proto-Indo-European language (jebh- / oibh- or *ojebh) and in its purest form means "to have sexual intercourse." In Russian, this word has given rise to a huge number of very popular idioms. One of the most popular is the phrase "f*ck your mother." Linguists claim that the ancient Slavs used this expression in the context of "Yes, I'm fit for your fathers!". Other expressions with this verb are known today, meaning to mislead, to express indifference, to make claims.

Mat devaluation

In fairness, it should be noted that many Russian writers were distinguished by the ability to insert a “strong word” into their speech. There was a mate even in some poems. Of course, this is not about fairy tales and not about love lyrics, but about friendly epigrams and satirical works. In 2013, on March 19, the State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted a bill banning obscene language in the media. Those from the media that still dare to use one or another "strong" word will have to pay a fine of about 200 thousand rubles. It is noteworthy that deputies from the United Russia faction became ardent supporters of this bill, who commented on their actions as a desire to protect the country's population from an immoral information environment. However, most Russians believe that the fight against obscenity is useless. Neither campaigning nor fines will help in this. The main thing is internal culture and upbringing.

RUSSIAN MAT

Every person in Russia from early childhood begins to hear words that he calls obscene, obscene, obscene. I am categorically against swearing in public places, against the use of obscene words in works of art, and especially on television. However, the mat exists, lives and is not going to die, no matter how we protest against its use. And you don't have to be hypocrites, close your eyes, you need to study this phenomenon both from the psychological side and from the point of view of linguistics.

I started collecting, studying and interpreting swear words as a student in the sixties. The defense of my Ph.D. thesis was held in such secrecy, as if it were about the latest nuclear research, and immediately after the defense of the thesis, the dissertation went into the special libraries of libraries. Later, in the seventies, when I was preparing my doctoral dissertation, it was necessary to clarify some words, and I could not get my dissertation from the Lenin Library without special permission from the authorities. So it was quite recently, when, as in a well-known anecdote, everyone pretended to know diamat, although no one knew him, but everyone knew mat, and pretended not to know him.

Currently, every second writer uses obscene words in his works, we hear swearing from the television screen, but for several years not a single publishing house that I proposed to publish a scientific explanatory dictionary of swear words decided to release it. And only the dictionary, shortened and adapted for a wide range of readers, saw the light of day.

To illustrate the words in this dictionary, I widely used folklore: obscene anecdotes, ditties that have long lived among the people, were often used, but were published in recent years, as well as quotations from the works of the classics of Russian literature from Alexander Pushkin to Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Many quotes are taken from the poems of Sergei Yesenin, Alexander Galich, Alexander Tvardovsky, Vladimir Vysotsky and other poets. Of course, I could not do without the works of Ivan Barkov, without the "Russian cherished tales" by A. I. Afanasyev, without folk obscene songs, poems and poems, without contemporary writers such as Yuz Aleshkovsky and Eduard Limonov. A treasure trove for researchers of Russian swearing is a cycle of hooligan novels by Pyotr Aleshkin, which are almost completely written in obscene words. I could illustrate this dictionary only with quotations from his works.

The dictionary is intended for a wide range of readers: for those who are interested in swear words, for literary editors, for translators from the Russian language, etc.

In this dictionary, I did not indicate in what environment the word functions: whether it refers to criminal jargon, to youth slang, or to jargon of sexual minorities, because the boundaries between them are rather shaky. There are no words that would be used in one environment. I also indicated only the obscene meaning of the word, leaving other, ordinary meanings outside of it.
