As you know, not so long ago, we, dear colleagues, witnessed the next 23rd maximum of the 11th year cycle of solar activity. But are there any other activity cycles besides the aforementioned 11 year old?

Before answering this question, let me briefly remind you what solar activity is. In the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, this term is given the following definition: Solar activity is a set of phenomena observed on the Sun ... These phenomena include the formation of sunspots, torches, prominences, flocculi, filaments, Changes in the intensity of radiation in all parts of the spectrum.

Basically, these phenomena are due to the fact that there are areas on the sun with a magnetic field that differs from the general one. These areas are called active. Their number, size, as well as their distribution on the Sun are not constant, but change with time. Consequently, over time, the activity of our daylight also changes. Moreover, this change in activity is cyclical. So in short we can explain the essence of the subject of our conversation.

During periods of cycle maximum, Active Regions are located all over the solar disk, they are numerous and well developed. During the minimum period, they are located near the equator; there are not many of them, and they are poorly developed. The visible manifestation of active regions are sunspots, flares,

prominences, filaments, flocculi, etc. The most famous and studied is the 11-year cycle, discovered by Heinrich Schwabe and confirmed by Robert Wolf, who studied the change in solar activity using the Wolf index he proposed over two and a half centuries. The change in the activity of the sun with a period equal to 11.1 years is called the Schwabe-Wolff law. It is also assumed that there are 22, 44 and 55 year activity cycles. It is established that the value of the maximum cycles varies with a period of about 80 years. These periods appear directly on the graph of solar activity.

But scientists, having studied rings on tree cuts, banded clay, stalactites, fossil deposits, mollusk shells and other signs, suggested the existence of longer cycles, lasting about 110, 210, 420 years. As well as the so-called secular duration and supersecular cycles of 2400, 35000, 100,000 and even 200 - 300 million years.

But why pay so much attention to the study of solar activity? The answer lies in the fact that our daylight has a huge impact on the earth and on earthly life.

An increase in the intensity of the so-called "solar wind" - the flow of charged particles - corpuscles - emitted by the Sun, can cause not only beautiful auroras, but also disturbances in the earth's magnetosphere - Magnetic storms - which affect not only equipment, which can lead to man-made accidents, Noi is not directly human health. And not only physical, but also mental.

During peak periods, for example, suicides are more frequent. The activity of the sun also affects crop yields, births and deaths, and much more.

In general, any amateur astronomer can, by conducting regular observations of the Sun, compare its graph with graphs of the intensity of any phenomena associated with the atmosphere, biosphere, and others.

11 year cycle. ("Schwabe cycle" or "Schwabe-Wolf cycle") is the most prominent cycle of solar activity. Accordingly, the statement about the presence of an 11-year cyclicity in solar activity is sometimes called the "Schwabe-Wolf law".

The approximately ten-year periodicity in the increase and decrease in the number of sunspots on the Sun was first noticed in the first half of the 19th century by the German astronomer G. Schwabe, and then by R. Wolf. The “eleven-year” cycle is conditionally called: its length for the 18th-20th centuries varied from 7 to 17 years, and in the 20th century, on average, it was closer to 10.5 years.

This cycle is characterized by a fairly rapid (average of about 4 years) increase in the number of sunspots, as well as other manifestations of solar activity, followed by a slower (about 7 years) decrease. Other periodic changes are also observed during the cycle, for example, a gradual shift of the zone of sunspot formation to the equator ("Spörer's law").

The solar dynamo theory is usually used to explain such periodicity in the appearance of spots.

Although various indices can be used to determine the level of solar activity, the most commonly used for this is the annual average Wolf number. The 11-year cycles determined using this index are conventionally numbered starting from 1755. The 24th cycle of solar activity began in January 2008 (according to other estimates - in December 2008 or January 2009).

The 22-year cycle (the "Hale cycle") is essentially a doubling of the Schwabe cycle. It was discovered after the relationship between sunspots and the Sun's magnetic fields was understood at the beginning of the 20th century.

It turned out that in one cycle of spot activity, the total magnetic field of the Sun changes sign: if in the minimum of one Schwabe cycle the background magnetic fields are predominantly positive near one of the Sun's poles and negative near the other, then after about 11 years the picture changes to the opposite.

Every 11 years, the characteristic arrangement of magnetic polarities in sunspot groups also changes. Thus, in order for the total magnetic field of the Sun to return to its original state, two Schwabe cycles must pass, that is, about 22 years.

Secular cycles of solar activity according to radiocarbon data.

The secular cycle of solar activity (the "Gleisberg cycle") has a length of about 70-100 years and manifests itself in modulations of the 11-year cycle. The last maximum of the secular cycle was observed in the middle of the 20th century (near the 19th 11-year cycle), the next one should fall approximately in the middle of the 21st century.

There is also a two-century cycle (“Süss cycle” or “de Vries cycle”), as the minima of which one can consider a steady decrease in solar activity occurring approximately once every 200 years, lasting for many decades (the so-called global minima of solar activity) - the Maunder minimum (1645-1715), Spörer's minimum (1450-1540), Wolf's minimum (1280-1340) and others.

Millennium cycles. Solar Hallstatt cycle with a period of 2,300 years according to radiocarbon analysis.

Radiocarbon analysis also indicates the existence of cycles with a period of about 2300 years (the "Hollstatt cycle") or more.

Observation of the Sun has been carried out since the appearance of man himself, however, with the development of technology, more and more humanity has come closer to understanding its nature. The emergence of the telescope in the 17th century led to the discovery of sunspots - a completely unexpected phenomenon at that time, since the Sun was considered a kind of ideal that is not capable of having any flaws, especially spots. Despite great doubts about the existence of spots on the Sun, one of their discoverers, Galileo Galilei, began to observe the spots. This led to the fact that a periodic change in their number was detected. So the largest number of sunspots was observed approximately every 11 years.

That is, at some point when the number of sunspots reaches the maximum number is called the year of maximum sunspots. Following the maximum, a decrease in the number of sunspots begins, and on average, after six years, a minimum number of sunspots can be observed. Then their number starts to increase again.

In order to keep track of solar cycles, it was assumed that the maximum observed in 1761 is the maximum of the first cycle of the Sun.

In connection with the cycles of the Sun, periodic changes in other solar phenomena have also been observed. These include other objects that arise on the Sun - floccules, torches and prominences. Floccules are bright and dense fibrous formations in one of the layers of the Sun - the chromosphere. Flares are bright fields that usually surround sunspots. The number of both of these observed objects varies in the same way as the number of sunspots, and in the same years reaches a maximum and minimum.

Another phenomenon, which also has an 11-year period, are prominences - beams of solar matter that rise above the surface of a star and are in this position for some time due to the influence of the Sun's magnetic field. However, unlike flocculi and faculae, the largest number of prominences is observed not in the years of the solar maximum, but 1–2 years before.

Another phenomenon that, as it turned out, changes with an 11-year period is the shape of the solar corona - the outer layer of the Sun, which can be partially observed without special instruments by covering our star in front of a round object, for example, a coin. In the years of maximum, it has the greatest development and its numerous beams of rays and jets diverge in all directions, forming a radiance of approximately rounded outlines. During the minimum years, it turns out to consist of only two limited beams propagating in the plane of the equator.

In connection with the periodization of the observed above phenomena, which, although they have the same period, differ in their years of maximum / minimum, it is customary to speak not of an eleven-year period of spots, but of an eleven-year period of solar activity. This implies both the totality of the formations and phenomena observed on the Sun, and the unknown reason forcing them to change periodically.

Cause of the cycles of the sun

Although solar phenomena undoubtedly change periodically, 11 years is only an average of such a period, which can range from 7 to 17 years.

It is known that the Sun affects not only the illumination and temperature of the Earth, but also its magnetic field. So sometimes you can observe incorrect, as if random, fluctuations of the arrow in one direction or another. On different days they reach different sizes. There are days when the amplitude of the fluctuations is so significant that the fluctuations can be observed even with an ordinary compass. Such rapid changes in the earth's magnetism are called magnetic storms. The energy of magnetic storms is sometimes even capable of causing accidents in electrical networks.

If we calculate the number of magnetic storms for each year, and then plot the course of the annual number of storms over time, we get a curve with maxima alternating after 11 years. On this graph, I are the amplitudes of daily fluctuations in the declination of the magnetic needle, II are the amplitudes of daily fluctuations in the horizontal component of the magnetic field, III are the relative numbers of sunspots.

solar cycle chart

Thus, the cause that causes the periodization of sunspots also periodically affects the change in the Earth's magnetism. In addition, it was noted that a magnetic storm occurs most often after a group of large and rapidly developing spots pass through the middle of the visible hemisphere of the Sun.

Later, an 11-year periodicity in the number of auroras and some other phenomena occurring in the Earth's atmosphere was also noticeable. It is noteworthy that these changes on the Earth lag behind the corresponding phenomena on the Sun by about 1-2 days. Since sunlight reaches the Earth in 8 minutes, the reason for the periodization of these phenomena on Earth is not related to it.

In connection with the development of technology, in 1908, the American astronomer George Hale discovered the magnetic field of the Sun. Further study of it led to the fact that it is the magnetic field of our star, as well as its changes, that cause the phenomena described above.

Periodization of the Sun's magnetic field

The study of the connection between the magnetic field of the Sun and the phenomenon of sunspots led to the following conclusion: spots appear as a result of "penetrating" the upper layers of the Sun by magnetic lines. Further study of the nature of other solar phenomena and formations also made it possible to discover the connection between these phenomena and changes in the solar magnetic field. Soon a detailed study of the magnetic field itself and its lines of force led to the following picture of its dynamics.

At the beginning of the Sun's magnetic cycle, which is the middle of the sunspot cycle, there is a magnetic field of some form, the lines of force of which are gradually "wound" on the surface of our star due to the fact that the equatorial regions rotate faster than the polar ones. Over time, they "get tangled" and at some point begin to penetrate the surface of the Sun at many points, which are usually located closer to the equator. It is at this moment that the maximum number of sunspots is observed, and the vast majority of which are located closer to the equator. Thus, spots are formed as a result of magnetic lines penetrating the upper layers of the Sun.

Further, part of the magnetic field, as it were, is torn off and thrown away from the Sun, dragging along with it part of the stellar matter, which is mainly composed of charged particles. This flow of charged particles is called the solar wind, which subsequently leads to changes in natural phenomena on Earth. After the “separation” from the magnetic field of some part of it, the so-called change in the direction of the azimuthal field occurs, that is, the magnetic field “turns over” as it were. This is the end of the 11 year solar magnetic field cycle and the middle of the sunspot cycle. Thus, a full solar cycle is about 22 years, after which the magnetic field of the Sun returns to its original position.

According to a model called the Solar Dynamo, our star independently generates a magnetic field as a result of the axisymmetric rotation of its various layers, which are represented as plasma, which by definition has a charge.

The magnetic field of the sun

Other solar cycles

In addition to the 11-year and 22-year solar cycles, other periodic changes in solar activity are also observed. So, for example, solar maxima and minima also show fluctuations on a century scale, which is called the "Gleisberg cycle" and has a period of 70 - 100 years. There is also a bicentennial solar cycle (“Süss cycle” or “de Vries cycle”), the minimum of which is called “global” and is defined as a noticeable decrease in solar activity over tens of years once every two centuries.

It is noteworthy that during the "global minima" there is not only a decrease in the number of sunspots, but also significant cooling on the Earth. The most famous such period is the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715), during which the so-called "Little Ice Age" lasted. An unambiguous relationship between these phenomena has not been found, however, there is a coincidence (correlation) of secular solar cycles with temperature changes on Earth. The causes of the secular cycles of the Sun themselves are also not clearly defined. It is likely that these cycles are caused not by the nature of the star, but by the dynamics of some external objects, for example, the rotation of a large star cluster in the center of the Milky Way.

For future gerontological studies, the results of studies obtained at the intersection of geophysics, astronomy and biology and indicating the existing links between the indicators of living objects and cosmophysical factors may be of particular interest. The paper presents data on the main astronomical factors that are potentially capable of causing changes in gravitational effects on the biosphere as a human habitat on a regular basis. Among these factors are the movements of the Earth and the Moon, described by equations known in astronomy: the equation of equinoxes, the equation of time, as well as the main perturbations from the Sun (evection, variation and annual inequality), derived from the theory of the motion of the Moon. On the basis of the sum of the main perturbations from the Sun, the so-called λD-function, the relationships of fluctuations of the so-called "computer time", solar radiation energy in the range of 605–607 nm, as well as the concentration of hemoglobin and erythrocytes with the main perturbations from the Sun were studied. A conclusion was made about the universal nature of the impact of the movements of the Earth and the Moon on the biosphere. Tables are given for the period from 01.01.2015 to 12.31.2016 with calculated values of the λD function, potentially important for the analysis of their relationship with temporal changes in various body parameters. The patterns obtained by comparing the changes in different biomarkers with the course of the values of the λD function from the tables can be predictive in the study of the functioning of the human body and the biosphere over astronomical periods. The studies were carried out in Antarctica, where the effects of artificial electromagnetic fields are excluded, at Vostok (1998–1999) and Novolazarevskaya (2003–2004) stations.

The results of a study of the evolution of the statistical characteristics of a series of Wolf numbers and a number of sunspot groups on the scale of their variability of about 100 years are presented. A semi-empirical model of the probabilistic distribution of Wolf numbers is constructed. The method of moments is presented as applied to the problem of calculating the evolution of the parameters of the distribution of Wolf numbers.

The subject of the analysis in the article is the diary of the Russian emigrant poetess Irina Knorring, which she kept from 1917 to 1943. The diary is considered as an intertext in gender analysis procedures; the author of the article proves that Knorring kept two diaries at the same time, intertwining poetic texts with prose, on the one hand, and strangers with her own, on the other. The cosmic ray (CR) modulation observed on neutron monitors during the minimum, growth, maximum, and onset of the decline in solar activity (SA) of the 24th cycle (2008–2015) is compared with the CR modulation in the analogous periods of the SA of cycles 20–23 . After a prolonged SA minimum between cycles 23 and 24 in 2007–2009. and the CR maximum at the end of 2009, in which the CR intensity exceeded the previous four CR maxima, a weaker CR modulation is observed in the SA growth phase than the modulation in the corresponding periods of the previous cycles. During the period of SA growth in 2011–2014. against the background of a decrease in the eleven-year variation, shorter-period CR variations (oscillations with a variable period, bursts of activity) are better manifested. In the current 24th SA cycle, a scenario with two SA maxima was realized, and in CR we see one minimum at the end of 2014, which is ≈12% away from the 2009 maximum for particles with a rigidity of 10 GV. The CR modulation in the last cycle is the weakest for the entire time of operation of neutron monitors. Since the beginning of 2015, the restoration of CL began. Possible reasons for the unusually weak CR modulation are considered. Quantitative estimates are made of the contribution to the created CR modulation of various characteristics of the solar magnetic field in the period under study of the 24th cycle and in the corresponding periods of 20–23 solar cycles, and their comparison is carried out.

This paper presents the results of a study of archival materials of 25,169 inpatients with alcohol dependence (F 10.2–F 10.4) of the Poltava Regional Clinical Psychiatric Hospital named after O.F. Maltsev for one 11-year solar cycle from 1997 to 2007. The presented data on the frequency of occurrence of alcoholic binges over a long time in one region showed that this is a complex psychobiological process. The number of hospitalized young people (under 20 years old) with drunken forms of alcohol dependence and with episodic hard drinking more than doubled during the study period. These data indicate the presence of a connection in patients with binge forms of alcohol dependence, as well as episodic binge drinking with circannual rhythms, which determine the clinical manifestations of these conditions and the fluctuation of admissions of patients to inpatient treatment in one or another period of the year. The onset of the disease correlates with the peaks of solar activity and seasonality (more often spring - autumn). The most pronounced peaks in the admission of patients with alcoholic binges in March - May, a less pronounced rise in October - December, which makes it expedient to carry out therapeutic and preventive measures in this contingent of patients in February - March and September - October

In the modern period (2013), the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus Pallas, 1814) is one of the main commercial objects of the Sea of Azov, the regime of which is favorable for reproduction and development, and the habitat covers the entire water area of the sea. Biomass of round timber in 1952÷2012 varied from 5.0 to 201.6 (average 32.0) thousand tons. The population of the round goby is very variable. As in fish with a short life cycle, it experiences significant changes in abundance: over a short period (2–5 years), the yield of a generation can differ by tens and even hundreds of times. Taking into account the ecological and commercial importance of the round timber as the most widespread species among the Azov gobies, monitoring the state of its population and stock is relevant.

The Sun has been unusually "quiet" lately. The reason for the inactivity is revealed in the graph below.

Graph of the Wolf number from 2000 to 2019 (the red line shows the forecast). NOAA

As can be seen from the graph, there was a decline in the 11-year cycle of solar activity. Over the past two years, the number of sunspots has been decreasing as solar activity shifts from maximum to minimum. The decrease in the number of sunspots means that there are fewer solar flares and coronal mass ejections.

Photos of the Sun taken by the SOHO space observatory since 1996. NASA

Thus, the 24th solar cycle becomes the weakest in the last 100 years.

What is the 11 year activity cycle?

The eleven-year cycle, also called the Schwabe cycle or the Schwabe-Wolf cycle, is a markedly pronounced cycle of solar activity lasting approximately 11 years. It is characterized by a rather rapid (about 4 years) increase in the number of sunspots, and then a slower (about 7 years) decrease. The length of the cycle is not strictly equal to 11 years: in the XVIII-XX centuries, its length was 7-17 years, and in the XX century - about 10.5 years.

What is the Wolf number?

The Wolf number is a measure of solar activity proposed by the Swiss astronomer Rudolf Wolf. It is not equal to the number of spots currently observed on the Sun, but is calculated by the formula:

f is the number of observed spots;
g is the number of observed sunspot groups;
k is a coefficient derived for each telescope with which observations are made.

How calm is it really?

A common misconception is that space weather "freezes" and becomes uninteresting to observe during low solar activity. However, even during such periods there are many curious phenomena. For example, Earth's upper atmosphere is collapsing, allowing space debris to accumulate around our planet. The heliosphere is shrinking, causing the Earth to become more open to interstellar space. Galactic cosmic rays penetrate the inner solar system with relative ease.

Scientists are monitoring the situation as the number of sunspots continues to decline. As of March 29, the Wolf number is 23.
