Emil. good octopus

Tomi Ungerer

Half a century ago, this book was given to children by the famous artist, Anderson Prize winner, creator of the well-known boa constrictor Crictor and the no less popular Hryullops pigs, Tomi Ungerer. His work leaves no one indifferent. They inspire both adults and children, excite the imagination.

The protagonist of this story is a very kind and cute octopus, who saves drowning people and those in trouble in the depths of the sea, loves children very much, can turn into different animals and play chess with a diver at the bottom of the sea. Children will definitely love these plain-looking marine reptiles, but they are unlikely to be able to eat them after this book.

Julia Donaldson

A book about the underwater world from the British creators of the world bestseller about the Gruffalo tells the incredible stories of the sprat dreamer (it turns out there is such a fish - sprat!) in verse. An excellent translation by Maria Boroditskaya, as well as drawings by Axel Scheffler with his trademark, perfectly recognizable colorful style, will make you and your children open this book more than once, and maybe even learn it by heart.

There are many different inhabitants studying at the sea school, and only one of them is always late because of some adventures that only she herself believes in. But suddenly she really gets into trouble, and for some reason, fish and animals completely unfamiliar to her come to her aid. Why? The sea is also full of rumors. No less a sea book by the same authors - "The Snail and the Whale" - can serve as an excellent addition to reading with children at sea.

The Adventures of a Little Cod

Olaf Kusheron

For some reason, children's writers and artists are very fond of devoting their books and cartoons to marine life. Probably because this world is almost unknown to us, and also because they are mysterious and silent.

Some time ago, the Compass Guide publishing house, for the first time in the last half century, republished a book by a Norwegian writer about the adventures of an inquisitive, like all children, cod fry named Trond. This small encyclopedia, in addition to an interesting fairy tale plot, contains a lot of popular science facts about the underwater world. It will help adults answer many children's "why" that arise when a child enters an unfamiliar environment - the sea. How the gills and swim bladder of fish are arranged, why they do not drown, but a dolphin or a whale can drown, what a starfish or stingray eats, how different fish breed, seahorses and corals - everything is here.

How I Became a Traveler

Fedor Konyukhov

The sea for children is associated not only with fish and the underwater world, but also with ships. And that means - with travel, pirates and exciting adventures. In this small, but very interesting and instructive book, the famous traveler, conqueror of the seas and oceans, as well as mountain peaks and ice, Fyodor Konyukhov tells children about his incredible travels and why he chose this path. At the age of 15, he single-handedly crossed the Sea of Azov on oars, and a little later, at 50, the whole Atlantic Ocean conquered all the highest mountain peaks. He encountered whales, pirates and polar bears. And the most interesting thing is that all this is not fiction of writers and not fairy tales at all, but pure truth!

“The traveler must carefully and lovingly keep all our beautiful Earth in his heart,” he instructs future sailors and rock climbers.

Above water, on water, under water

Nikolai Vatagin

An excellent mini-encyclopedia in pictures of all vehicles associated with the water. A concise but informative text and, most importantly, the wonderful illustrations by Nikolai Vatagin, in the smallest detail, tell children and adults all the most interesting things about the construction of ships, water planes or submarines without words.

A picture book, without a single word conveying all the shades of emotions and experiences of a child playing with the sea. The author of the illustrations, a young Korean artist Susie Lee, received more than one honorary international award for this book.

The masterful combination of black and white drawings of a girl and seagulls on one page and the azure blue sea opposite is mesmerizing. Children, as in a mirror, look at the reflection in the sea wave of the emotions of a girl who either teases, or frolics, or gets scared, or gently plays with her.

Hello, my brother Bzou!

Evgeny Rudashevsky

The debut story of the writer and journalist Yevgeny Rudashevsky, still in manuscript, was awarded the Kniguru prize and brought the author the main prize. This is a documentary story about the friendship between a boy and a dolphin on the eve of the war. The year is 1980, 17-year-old Amza, together with his older brother, rescues a dolphin that has washed ashore and gradually becomes his friend.

Against the background - the rough life and customs of the Abkhazian village, whose inhabitants, century after century, plow the land, go to the sea and, to be honest, do not quite understand the unusual friendship of a boy with a dolphin. Soon Amze should turn 18, which means that he will be called up for military service, which promises the hero something worse than separation from a friend that occupies all his thoughts. The most interesting thing is that there is practically no war in the book. The heroes of Rudashevsky generally do not really imagine what it is, but because of this, their confusion and timidity look even more piercing. The feeling of the senselessness of the impending catastrophe and the premonition of separation from the usual way of life is perhaps the main motive that Rudashevsky managed to convey.

"Vasa" goes to sea!

Mats Wahl

If you have been to Stockholm, you must have visited the Vasa Museum, a ship of the early seventeenth century from the time of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf, which was supposed to be the largest warship in the world, but sank in less than 20 minutes. It did not sink forever, but it was discovered and raised to the surface only in 1961.

"Vasa" is not just a historical Swedish attraction, but also an important witness of the era, because it has almost completely preserved all the decoration and equipment. Therefore, the writer Mats Val has two stories: first, a fictional story about how Vasa was built, and then a documentary one - a detailed story about her decks, holds that adorned her with magnificent wooden sculptures. Of particular value here are the drawings by Sven Nurdqvist, an artist familiar to everyone from the stories of Pettson and Findus and known for his attention to detail: not a single trifle escapes his gaze.

Adventure, adventure.
Where are the duels and where are the chases?
Oh, how I want adventure!
As luck would have it, all of them are not there.
What is life without adventures -
Only rules and laws.
Is it possible to come to terms with this
If ten years have passed? song from the movie "The Adventures of Petrov and Vasechkin, ordinary and incredible")

One has only to think about adventures, and a song from the cult Soviet film about Petrov and Vasechkin will immediately come to mind: if ten years have passed, it's time to go in search of real adventures! And where else can you find so many adventures, if not on the pages of the most interesting books! Today we will go along with our favorite characters across the seas, over the waves, and our review will be devoted to adventures on and under water, on the seashores, in the depths of the ocean and in the open spaces of the river. Full speed ahead! Let's hit the road!

In marine novels, there are many times more dangers: the capture of a ship by pirates, a meeting with giant octopuses or stingrays, a shipwreck, a fall overboard. The sea does not forgive the weak and cowardly. Its heroes are courageous and brave captains plowing the expanses of the seas, brave travelers risking everything to achieve their goal, outstanding scientists studying the life of the deep sea. Therefore, adventure novels about the sea are extremely important for teenagers: there is always a positive role model here!

But what is it? On the left side of the board is the Adventureland series, here we will anchor for a while! There are so many adventures in this series! Read - I don't want to! Series - gift. The books have serial design, slightly enlarged format, embossed cover, color illustrations by contemporary artists. And in this series you can find classics of adventure literature, time-tested hits: novels by Jules Verne, Alexander Belyaev, Jack London and many other writers.

More and more readers travel on the ship "Duncan" along with the heroes of Jules Verne's book "Children of Captain Grant", trying to decipher a strange document found in the stomach of a hammerhead fish, faced with lies and deceit, with nobility and love, and in the end find the one you've been looking for.

And here is Verne's novel The Fifteen-Year-Old Captain. Dick Sand, captain of the Pilgrim, embarks on a dangerous journey. Like other novels of the writer, this novel is densely populated: Verne fills his narrative with a large number of charismatic characters, showing people of different professions and classes. Having gone through joys and sorrows, they must understand the meaning of friendship, love, human support: goodness and justice will win no matter what. This victory is always in the works of Verne is a reward for fortitude, courage and dedication.

"Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" is also no exception. All the characters in this novel are honest, noble, passionate about their work. Professor Pierre Aronnax, his servant Conseil and the whaler Ned Land find themselves aboard an underwater ship, where they become captives of the mysterious Captain Nemo. They will get acquainted with the underwater world, a long walk along the bottom, fight with a giant octopus and much, much more. By the way, now you won’t surprise anyone with a trip on a submarine, and at the time of the release of the novel, it was impossible to even imagine that such submarines would soon begin to plow the expanses of the ocean!

Another book about submarine travel is The Secret of Two Oceans by Grigory Adamov. Under mysterious circumstances, the Soviet ship Arktika and the French ship Victoire perish. The crew of the Pioneer submarine must find out the reasons for their death by crossing two oceans from Leningrad to Vladivostok. Enemies are trying with all their might to destroy the boat. A team of sailors is constantly in danger: there is a battle with an octopus, and a meeting with a prehistoric lizard, and most importantly - a serious and decisive battle with a traitor! The situation is complicated by the fact that among the sailors there was a teenage boy who suffered from a shipwreck. His life cannot be put at risk. Despite the fact that the book is very "Soviet", it is kind and real. And still loved by readers!

In the Adventureland series, I would also like to note the novel by Alexander Belyaev "Amphibian Man", one of the most famous works of the writer. From this novel often begin acquaintance with the adventure-fantastic genre. The adventures of Ichthyander, half-man, half-fish, struck the imagination of readers at the time of the release of the novel and do not leave indifferent to this day. This is a book about how difficult it is to live in society for someone who is not like the others, about how cruel people are sometimes. And also about the underwater world, which is equally beautiful and cruel.

Another novel by Belyaev is “The Island of Lost Ships”. The reader will find himself in the central part of the Sargasso Sea (a sea covered with strong algae, in which ships get entangled and die). Strong algae and bottom features do not allow ships to go under water. This is how the state appears - "The Island of the Lost Ships". In a strange world lost among the dead sea and shipwrecks, the heroes will find many adventures, solving dangerous secrets and crimes, sea monsters, countless treasures and, of course, romantic love.

Our sea cruise continues, and we are sailing to the World Book series from the ENAS-book publishing house. This series is budget: books of a standard regular format, with black and white illustrations. It includes mostly forgotten and long-out-of-print works. For example, Coral Island by R. Ballantyne! The story was incredibly popular at the end of the 19th century: Ballantine decided to retell the plot of Robinson Crusoe, imagining what would happen if shipwrecked teenagers landed on the island instead of Robinson. Their life on a desert island is a fairy tale. They win the battle with the pirates, build housing and sew clothes. It is noteworthy that "Coral Island" outraged the famous writer W. Golding in his time, and he wrote in response to Ballantyne his famous "Lord of the Flies" as a parody of his work. Ironically, the Parody subsequently eclipsed the original and became one of the most famous novels of the 20th century.

Another "world book" is R. Kipling's story "The Brave Captains". The protagonist - the son of one of the richest people in the country - is on the verge of death, having fallen overboard of a comfortable ship. Relatives are sure that he died. But the boy finds himself on a Rabat schooner, where he no longer has caring servants, and he must take care of himself. From a capricious spoiled boy, Harvey turns into a persistent young man who is no longer afraid of difficulties and hardships. The book is read with great interest, we recommend reading it from 9-10 years old.

But this book was the favorite of many readers. It is impossible not to empathize with the hero of the story "Sea Wolf" by Thomas Mine Reed. Young Philip Forster finds himself in a seemingly hopeless situation: he is locked in the hold of a ship, and not a single living soul will rush to look for him. Philip won't last long without food, water and light... We must look for a way out! This story is a detailed instruction on how not to lose heart in the most difficult situations, how to maintain good spirits, not to lose the will and desire to live. After reading it, it becomes clear that a way out can always be found, unless you are inactive and do not calm down! An important book for teenagers.

Well, we are changing the route again: the right rudder! We are heading to Treasure Island from the Makhaon publishing house! The book needs no special introduction: a classic of adventure literature! The story of how young Jim Hawkins unexpectedly got involved in a story with pirates and treasures excites the minds of more than one generation of readers! Excerpts from the work are even included in the compulsory school curriculum. And, of course, this is right, because the romance brought up by adventure books is the driving force behind many future discoveries, and the code of honor written in them is the basis of any mature personality. For example, the passage where Jim refuses to be saved because he gave his word to Silver! To your main enemy! You can tell a child a hundred times about a sense of duty, but how much more powerful is one such example! In the edition of "Swallowtail" it is worth paying attention to the illustrations of the famous Australian artist Robert Ingpen, winner of the International Gold Medal. H.K. Andersen. His drawings are truthful and emotional, they captivate with their sincerity and convey the very essence of the work. A great gift for any teenager 10+.

Another adventure novel about the incredible events that happened to a sailor from York is Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. Robinson finds himself on a desert island after surviving a shipwreck and an encounter with pirates. But a new danger awaits him on the island - a meeting with savage cannibals... In the edition of "Makhaon" there is a classic retelling by Korney Chukovsky, illustrations by the Honored Artist of Russia Anatoly Itkin.

Left: "Courageous Captains". Right: Sea Wolf. Publishing house "ENAS-book"

We are again moving towards "Nigma" to moor at the works of Alexander Grin - a romantic writer, a writer-philosopher who loves and knows the sea. One of his best novels is "Running on the Waves". This is an adventure book with detective, fairy tale and fantasy elements, the main idea of which is "You need to believe in your dream!". The protagonist Thomas Harvey is looking for his dream and his ideal. More than once he will be on the verge of life and death, but he will always be helped by the mysterious sorceress Fresy Grant, running along the sea waves. Can Harvey find the love of his life? Will he be able to defeat cruel enemies and become happy? Where did the strange sorceress Fresy Grant come from? There are many secrets in the novel, and they must be unraveled.

And, of course, Green's main work, his original business card - "Scarlet Sails". An immortal story about love, fidelity, dreams and, of course, about the sea, over which the Scarlet Sail will once bloom...

And finally, we must go to the bay of historical adventures! Here I want to talk about two books. The first one is “Vasa goes to sea” by Sven Nurdqvist and Mats Val. The book consists of two parts: the first is a literary text, the second is historical facts. Both parts are beautifully written, read with interest, reminiscent of both an adventure and a detective novel! The Vasa is one of the largest royal ships in the navy of the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf. This is the only ship that has come down to us since the beginning of the seventeenth century: it was discovered on the seabed at the entrance to Stockholm Bay in April 1961. The book is dedicated to the unusual history of the ship. This story has everything that will attract the attention of the boys: adventure, fire, plague, the search for a missing girl, a shipwreck and, of course, the victory of good over evil. The action develops rapidly, readers are constantly in suspense.

The second - "For three seas". The book was created on the basis of the notes of Afanasy Nikitin "Journey beyond the three seas" - one of the monuments of ancient Russian literature. Afanasy Nikitin told in his notes about his six-year journey through the eastern countries and India, its population, the magnificent palaces of princes and Indian art and architecture. Nikitin's life is an incredible and dangerous adventure and an example of selfless service to the Motherland and science.

Everything that is experienced and passed becomes an adventure. Erich Remarque

Our literary cruise is coming to an end. All the books that we talked about today are suitable for summer independent reading for teenagers 10+. Many sea adventures today were not included in our itinerary. We will be very grateful if you remember other titles of books about adventures on the seas and oceans! Then we will definitely go on a journey through the pages of our favorite books again!

10th place "Leviathan"

In our selection there is a place for all genres, including detective. One of Boris Akunin's early books, published back in 1998, is part of a series of novels about the adventures of Erast Fandorin. Just imagine: the end of the 19th century, the huge liner "Leviathan", going to India, and on board its ruthless killer, on whose conscience there is more than one death. The circle of suspects has been narrowed down to a few characters, but, nevertheless, it will not be so easy for the young diplomat Fandorin to unravel the criminal plan. The denouement of the story is unexpected and can surprise even experienced lovers of the detective genre. In addition to the details of the ship's life of first-class passengers and the ups and downs of the plot intrigue, Akunin colorfully paints the differences between Western and Eastern cultures. The sea in this novel not only limits the characters in their movements, but also hides the evidence.

9th place "Black Corsair"

Emilio Salgari and his adventure novel "The Black Corsair" occupy the penultimate position of the rating. Fans of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" this novel, no doubt, will appeal to: Tortuga, brave pirates, sweet revenge and mortal combat. Emilio Roccaner, aka the Black Corsair, dreams of taking revenge on the governor for the murder of his brothers. To help the brave sea wolf come his friends - Francois Olone and the famous pirate Henry Morgan. Emilio Salgari is considered a classic of Italian literature, he wrote more than 200 adventure novels and short stories - he is something like the Italian Alexandre Dumas, but writing about sea adventures. Fatal love, noble impulses, storms and storms - this book has everything to make the evening stop being boring. Fans of Captain Blood's Odyssey should love it.

8th place "Ship of Fools"

On this line of our selection is another book, the action of which takes place on a ship. But, unlike the previous ones, this is not an adventure or a detective story. The novel by Katherine Ann Porter, a remarkable American writer, is quite realistic and is a philosophical drama about how and why the world came to fascism. On board the ocean liner from Mexico to Germany, people of different destinies gathered, rich and poor, evil and kind, tolerant and not very - everyone has their own secrets and skeletons in the closet. Before the reader, a story unfolds about how, willy-nilly, people have to coexist with each other and what a complex creature a person is. The action of the novel takes place in 1931, at the height of the global crisis, and the ship itself is humanity in miniature with all its contradictions. Despite the depth of the content, "Ship of Fools" is easy to read and interesting.

7th place "Beach"

The novel by Alex Garland, in fact, has little in common with the famous film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio - everything in the book is much thinner, more serious and deeper. The protagonist finds himself on a beautiful Thai beach, where nature and the sea of fantastic beauty hide the terrible secrets of the human soul. A calm and relaxed book gradually draws the reader in, and then suddenly turns into a gripping and even ominous narrative. The search for Paradise on earth is not crowned with success, but leads to an understanding of oneself and human psychology in general. The life of a closed commune, the daily and sometimes painful getting food, squabbles and mutual irritation - paradise turns out to be just that, and the hero has to overcome his infantilism and finally take off his rose-colored glasses. A gripping story that won't let you go until the very last page.

6th place "Sea, sea"

The English writer Iris Murdoch, alas, is not very well known in our country, but her services to world literature do not become less because of this. The novel "Sea, Sea" depicts to the reader the life of a famous director, playwright and actor, who suddenly decided to retire and become a hermit. He understands his hermitage a little differently than most people, and settles in a luxurious villa on the seashore. Leaving the theatrical stage, the hero finds a new hobby for himself - cooking, and, plunging headlong into the creation of dishes, begins to delve into himself and his own life along the way, and these reflections lead him to different and not always pleasant conclusions. In this novel, the sea is not just the background of the hero's life, but his friend, confidant, almost animated in the mind of the protagonist. Sea, Sea won Iris Murdoch the Booker Prize in 1978.

5th place "Tsushima"

Seascape writer Alexey Novikov-Priboy wrote a wonderful novel-chronicle of one of the greatest naval battles in history. The book was created over many years and not only on the basis of memoirs and archival data: the author himself participated in the Battle of Tsushima, was captured by the Japanese, but managed to survive and write a wonderful book. Military historical chronicles paint an epic picture of the battle, covering all its possible aspects and shades. A gallery of characters of sailors, officers, admirals sweeps before readers - all participants in the bloody battle, in which, largely through the fault of the command, two Pacific squadrons were defeated. The main theme of the novel is the feat of Russian sailors, who managed to maintain honor and dignity in an unequal battle. A unique work that can captivate both fans of action-packed prose and lovers of the historical genre.

4th place "Sunken Treasures"

The book "Sunken Treasures" stands out from the entire collection - this is not fiction, but travel notes. But, you see, written by Jacques-Yves Cousteau is worth reading. The crew of the famous research ship "Calypso" led by the famous Frenchman is sent in search of a sunken Spanish ship that crashed on the coral reefs of Silver Bank. Day after day, the book describes the everyday life of the expedition, but not only: the reader has to learn a lot about the history of the New World, about what is so interesting for the team of the ship "Nuestra Señora de la Concepción", how Spain conquered the seas and much, much more. Easily and naturally, the author immerses the reader into the world of history and the depths of the sea, which hold many mysteries and secrets.

3rd place "Sea-ocean"

Another Italian author on our list is Alessandro Baricco with Sea-Ocean. In the tavern "Almayer" on the seashore, several completely different people, who do not know each other, meet: a professor compiling the "Encyclopedia of Limits", an artist who conceived an incredible picture, a girl with a broken heart ... Everyone is looking for support, tips, peace from the sea - and everyone finds what is destined for him by fate. The sea absorbs their passions, anxieties and sorrows, and gives hope for the best. Non-banal images, ornate descriptions, complex characters and interweaving of destinies - this wonderful, deep and poetic novel is rightfully considered the best in Barikko's work. For the book "Sea-Ocean" the writer received the prestigious Italian awards "Viareggio" and "Palazzo al Bosco".

2nd place "The Island of the Eve"

After the sensational novels "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum", Umberto Eco took up sea adventures. The time of action is the 17th century, and the plot itself is a bit like Robinson Crusoe, only in this novel the hero is not alone on the island, but on a ship anchored in the Pacific Ocean. There is no one left on the ship, the crew died in the battle with the natives, and the young nobleman Robert de la Grive will have to cope with his own imagination. Solitary stay on the ship begins to dominate him, the subconscious throws him more and more fears and doubts - the hero either plunges into these mind games, then again emerges to the surface. True to himself, Umberto Eco saturates the narrative not only with action scenes, but also with philosophical reasoning, historical details, numerous quotes and literary references. Reading this book is not the easiest thing to do, but it's worth it.

1st place "Islands in the ocean"

If we do without Ernest Hemingway's book in our selection, then it was not worth it, honestly, to start this whole rating. The creator, without exaggeration, of the greatest story "The Old Man and the Sea" wrote the novel "Islands in the Ocean" at the end of his life. This work was not completed by the author, and therefore inferior in popularity to other books by Hemingway. In the center of the story is the story of the melancholy artist Thomas Hudson and his family. Hemingway has always been interested in dramas of strong characters, he sincerely and honestly describes his hero, his moral choice and dedication. "He believed that happiness is the most wonderful thing in the world, and for those who know how to be happy, it can be as deep as sadness" - Hemingway wrote simply, but in every chapter, in every paragraph, in every line of his books seem to contain the wisdom of the ages.
