There is an interesting fact in his biography, when in January 1910 he fled from the Spas-Klepikovskaya school, where he studied, home, in Konstantinovo. Skillfully mastering the word, the brilliant poet Sergei Yesenin conveys in mean, but colorful strokes all the charm and at the same time the horror of the harsh Russian winter. After all, people who lived in Russia at that time repeatedly heard how travelers, getting lost in a snowstorm, sat down and fell asleep, never to wake up again. This deadly song, which the blizzard whistles winter, the lyricist conveys with a melody of a lullaby, using the rhythm of a two-syllable iambic tetrameter: “Winter sings - calls out, shaggy forest cradles ...”. Dangerous hugs of the snow blanket convey the sounds of pine branches, which ring like a carillon under the gusts of an icy wind. The dramatic mood is emphasized by heavy clouds, which “with deep longing” float to distant lands.

But the poet also shows another, beautiful, side of the violence of this life-threatening element. He compares a blizzard to a silky carpet, and anyone who has ever seen powder creeping along the ground can imagine this moving, just like a snake, snow cover. In order to “transfer” the reader even more to the realities of the work, Yesenin adds: “But it is painfully cold.” Yes, it is best to admire the blizzard from the window of warm housing. And here it is - housing. The next image of Yesenin is precisely the window. Surely, even, warm light is pouring out of it, it is warm and cozy behind it.

The contrast between the cold of nature and the warmth of human life is felt by sparrows who are trying to hide from the death-bearing kisses of winter under the protection of human habitation. The poet conveys tenderness for small birds, humanizing sparrows, comparing them with orphans. They are tired, cold and hungry, life is barely glimmering in them. The fact that they “huddle tighter” only strengthens the desire for solidarity with these living beings in the face of an evil blizzard.

Yesenin, increasing tension, gives the elements a human image. The blizzard is not just clearing up - she is trying to kill all living things, she is angry "with a mad roar." In her desire to get to the inhabitants of the hut, she knocks on the shutters, almost tears off the roof. What can people and sparrows oppose to this "Snow Queen"? Only hope for the early arrival of spring. The poem ends on an optimistic note: even if the birds are tender and freeze to death to the lullaby of a blizzard, the last thing they dream about will be “beautiful, in the smiles of the sun, a clear beauty of spring.”

The melody of this work seems to be asking to be set to music. Probably for this reason, inspired by the lullaby sung by a blizzard, composer Georgy Sviridov created the cantata “Winter sings - hoots”.
