A good bonus is a grant for studying the Czech language for a year before entering the university. The deadline for applying for a language grant is October this year. You can start learning the language from January 2019, and at the university itself from September 2019.

It should be understood that in order to submit documents in such a short time, it is necessary to have a sufficiently high level of knowledge and readiness to pass the international exam well on time.

If you understand that this is not about you yet, then you can prepare a little longer for the language proficiency exam and apply for training next year - there will be more options there.

In other countries, certain categories of students are offered special financial conditions. They are called scholarship programs. Scholarships differ significantly from classical Russian Western scholarships. First of all, the fact that most of these programs provide a discount on tuition fees. The size of this may vary. Practice shows that the scholarship almost never covers 100% of the cost of education. But getting a 50% discount is quite real. Foreign students in foreign universities are also offered symbolic scholarships (not exceeding $100 - $1500).

Types of scholarships

Scholarships in foreign universities are awarded to gifted students for academic, creative, sports achievements. Such support is called a merit-based scholarship. Sometimes scholarships are given to students in need of financial assistance. Scholarships of the needbased scholarship category, like the first ones, are awarded on an individual basis.

Another type of financial support for foreign students is fellowships. Such scholarships are awarded according to gender (special programs for women), social, ethnic, geographical characteristics. For students of master's and doctoral programs, research assistantship is provided for the performance of certain research work and teaching assistantship for achievements in teaching, assistant activities.

Other types of financial support for international students

At foreign universities, foreign students can reduce their tuition costs not only through scholarships. They, on equal terms with the citizens of the country, can receive grants (special purpose funds for financing research, projects), sponsorship from individuals, charitable organizations, interested companies (possibly potential employers).

Features of accrual and use of scholarship funds

Non-cash transfers of funds are practiced in foreign universities. This also applies to regular scholarships, grants, and sponsorship. Scholarship funds can be used to pay for certain items of a student's expenses (accommodation, meals, teaching materials, etc.), university education (partially or completely). Some scholarships are subject to taxes.

Any financial assistance imposes certain obligations on the scholarship holder. In the case of a merit based scholarship, this may be a restriction on the minimum semester or annual average score, with a teaching assistantship - on the number of hours spent on a particular type of activity in the interests of the university. In case of violation of the requirements, the scholarship is withdrawn.

The criteria for awarding financial assistance are primarily the academic performance of the candidate, as well as his personal qualities. The social activity of the student within the walls of the educational institution is also taken into account.

Scholarships are usually given in countries with high tuition fees. But strict criteria for selecting scholarship holders reduce the chances of foreigners to receive financial assistance. Experts in the field of education recommend that you initially choose the country of education according to your income.

A scholarship in Canada is a one-time financial assistance (on average from 500 to 5000 CAD, but sometimes we are talking about large amounts), which is provided to students for academic achievements, excellent knowledge of English. Previous work experience and volunteer work may also be taken into account. It is clear that getting a scholarship is not only honorable, but also economically beneficial, since the money can be spent, for example, on tuition fees.

OWL students are among the lucky ones!

Let us first prove that getting a scholarship is real.

We are proud that OWL-study students have repeatedly managed to receive recognition of success in material form!

In particular, in Douglas College, Vancouver, BC There are several of our fellows at once!

For example, this Igor Kreschenko :

- I had good grades in my high school diploma, and OWL-study helped me prepare a motivation letter - this is my path to the college entrance scholarship, which turned out to be very useful for me! She helped me partially cover the cost of education. I was very happy when I found out that I would be one of the 5 lucky ones!

Student Irina Kochan also got this opportunity:

- I am a student of Associate of Science, major in Biology. I was lucky enough to win a $2,000 CAD entry scholarship before coming to Vancouver. OWL-study consultants helped me collect all the important documents, diplomas, IELTS results and other achievements, as well as write a letter explaining why I am applying to this particular college, why I chose this particular specialty. And a few weeks before my arrival in Canada, I received an email congratulating me on my first small victory! I was happy to receive this financial assistance, which motivated me to study even better and strive for new achievements!

Another one of our students Mariana Pekelnaya says:

- The scholarship was a pleasant surprise for me. I entered Douglas College already having higher education and work experience. My life achievements were positively evaluated by the college commission, and I received the desired reward!

Of course, for beautiful eyes, foreign students are not given scholarships in Canadian universities. You need to prove that you are worthy of such an award. This can be done directly during training or, relatively speaking, in advance, upon admission.

To do this, the student needs fill in the registration form, add a motivation letter, your resume, diplomas confirming participation in various competitions, certificates of completion of courses in various fields of activity, scientific articles etc. Then a special commission considers candidates for a scholarship, identifies really talented and promising individuals who make sense to provide financial assistance.

Only student of a full-time two-year diploma program . Students of certified one-year programs are not eligible for scholarships. Therefore, if you are looking for a scholarship, firstly, make sure that the university you plan to enter has scholarship programs for international students, and secondly, choose a program for two years of study.

Interested? So let's take a look at some of the details!

Masters and PhD students are valued here!

Separate programs have been developed for foreign masters and graduate students, with the help of which universities can celebrate their merits and achievements in the scientific world.

For example, there is a scholarship Vanier Canada (Vanier CGS) by the Government of Canada. It is available to university graduates who have demonstrated success and want to continue their education in a PhD program at a Canadian university. The amount of financial support is $50,000 annually and is paid over a period of three years. The main criteria that are taken into account when selecting candidates are high academic achievements, leadership and research potential.

University of Manitoba (UMGF), University of Waterloo, University of Calgary They also provide scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students.

In addition to scholarships, talented research students may well qualify for a grant.

One of the most popular grant programs - The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships of the Government of Canada. It aims to support foreign postdoctoral students and develop their research programs in health, natural, technical, humanities or social sciences.

The main condition for research papers that can be submitted to the program Canadian Government Awards for Graduate Research- they must be Canadian-focused or important to Canada. The authors of such works are given the opportunity to conduct research in one of the higher educational institutions of Canada. And the annual grant is approximately 20,000 Canadian dollars.

The Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarships Program: The Trudeau Foundation awards 15 scholarships annually to students who are pursuing a doctorate in social sciences and the humanities. Of course, grants are distributed among the most talented and extraordinary personalities in terms of science.

Getting an education abroad is not cheap. However, most higher education institutions in Europe, the US and Canada provide grants, incentive scholarships and discounts to especially successful students. It will not be possible to fully cover the costs of education, but it is quite possible to reduce costs by 20-50 percent.

Main types of incentives

Scholarships for foreign students are given for various achievements in art, science, sports, creativity. Incentives are awarded on an individual basis. Such motivations include the following types of payments:

  1. Merit-based scholarship.
  2. Need-based scholarship.
  3. Fellowships.

Master's students and doctoral students receive scholarships for performing various research, pedagogical and assistant works.

Other types of financial support for foreign students

Types of scholarships abroad have not only the format of tuition discounts, but also the targeted provision of financial assistance to individuals who have proven themselves in a particular field. Funds are taken from sponsorship, voluntary donations and potential employers.

All types of scholarships abroad are mainly awarded in a non-cash format. These funds can be used for accommodation, meals, additional education and the student's daily needs. Some fees are subject to mandatory taxation.

The issuance of a scholarship may be interrupted if the student does not comply with the conditions that guarantee its receipt (hours and number of classes attended, participation in extracurricular life of the university, etc.). The determining factors for students to receive financial assistance are academic performance and individual qualities. In addition, the social activity of the student is taken into account. Experts recommend not relying on a scholarship, but initially choosing conditions that are financially acceptable.
