2016

Difficulties with financing, hope for public money

The crisis has made its own adjustments, the director of the university, Dmitry Kondratiev, admitted in September 2016:

“We have difficulties in attracting funding: those who worked with us continue to support the university, but finding new sponsors is very difficult. We turned to the government with a request to co-finance our activities.”

According to Kondratiev, he hopes that the state will support the university on parity terms and the university will become a private-public institution.

“We need one major sponsor who would cover half of the budget. Until now, this has not been found, ”the director throws up his hands. How much money the university asked from the budget is not specified.

Builders demand 4.2 billion rubles through the court

"Innopolis" did not pay off the contractor for the construction of the building of its University - the company "Kamgesenergostroy". The contractor demands in court from Innopolis 4.2 billion rubles. The Ministry of Telecom and Mass Communications intervened in the matter.

Relations between OJSC Innopolis and the construction contractor did not work out, and at the end of 2015, Kamgesenergostroy filed two lawsuits against this structure with the Arbitration Court of Tatarstan for the recovery of 2.15 billion rubles. and 2.05 billion rubles.

In total, Kamgesenergostroy demands to recover 4.2 billion rubles from Innopolis OJSC. with a total amount of both contracts of 3.85 billion rubles.

Thus, in addition to the fact that Kamgesenergostroy wants to recover from Innopolis OJSC the money not paid on obligations, the builders want to receive a bonus for the fact that the construction estimate exceeded the amount of contracts (see below).

2015: Moving to the campus of Innopolis

In 2015, the university began moving to the Innopolis campus, which includes an educational and research building designed for 2,000 students, a sports complex with a swimming pool, and residential buildings for 1,074 students.

For starters, you need to introduce yourself. My name is Alex and I am 20 years old. In 2015, I unexpectedly found out about enrollment for the first year at Innopolis University (emphasis on the second “o”). Initially, enrollment was announced only for 3-4 courses with mandatory knowledge of English at a level not lower than Intermediate. The exam was planned to be taken next year, but closer to the summer there was information about the enrollment for the first year. It would be foolish not to try.

Filing an application

When filling out the application, applicants had to pass an English test. The test, by the way, can be passed by almost any student who has at least somewhat memorized the basic rules of English. It was the easiest task of the entire qualifying round.

Calls, calls!

A week later, I received a call, which I was really looking forward to. No, it was not a call from Innopolis, they called from the military registration and enlistment office. The military ID was ready, which means that the path to admission is open. A few hours later, a call was also received, which was determined to be a call from the Republic of Tatarstan. This time they already called from the university, they clarified whether I would come. And here I decided to ask, what should I do if I have already completed the 1st course.

The answer was immediate! Specify the undergraduate program for 3-4 years, take an IT test, write a resume and a motivation letter in English. To say that there was not much time is to say nothing. To write a motivation letter, it would be good to spend a few days, and re-read another day. But there was little time. I remember it was Monday evening, and everything had to be sent out on Wednesday.

I decided to start with an IT test. It is worth saying that the test itself is completely in English and covers several areas of IT. For example, discrete mathematics, algorithms and data structures, knowledge of OOP, as well as the ability to compile code on the fly - a few lines, calculate what the program will output to the console after launch. Only 30 questions for 60 minutes. The task seems to be simple, but without specific knowledge it was quite difficult to pass it. Fortunately, I had such knowledge.

Another day was spent writing a motivation letter and resume. As soon as I sent everything, another call followed, where they again clarified whether I could come, and they also asked me to indicate the dates of departure from Moscow so that they could pay for the transfer from Moscow to Kazan and back. By the way, I live in Orel, which means I would have to spend 12 hours on a train from Moscow to Kazan and 4 hours from Orel to Moscow. But it is very easy to perceive, realizing that I will spend 3 days in Innopolis.

Kazan

Came and away we go. It was necessary to spend several hours as the arrival is at 11am and the first shuttle is only at 5pm. But I found a job pretty quickly. After all, only I could burn my tongue with hot coffee first, and then spill it on my jeans. Having bought new jeans, I went to the Innopolis office, where one of the organizers was already standing. Other applicants began to arrive. For funny stories, time flew by unnoticed. After leaving just a few minutes, we missed the first shuttle and we had to wait for the next one, which arrived literally 10 minutes later.

Kazan-Innopolis and the day of arrival

Many expected to see an absolutely unfinished city, but, to everyone's surprise, quite a lot has already been built. The abundance of greenery around smoothed out those places where construction is taking place. As soon as we went inside the campus (it’s hard to call it a hostel, there are no such conditions anywhere), we had to register, get badges, as well as rather original T-shirts, a pen, a notebook and a small backpack for all this household. It is also worth noting that combs, slippers, a set for showering and brushing teeth, as well as bed linen were issued. Dinner was next. Since I have a rather bad attitude towards canteens, I was in no particular hurry to go there. But as soon as I entered, all my prejudice disappeared - there was a very tasty smell around, and the cooks gladly served two servings to those who wished. The food turned out to be very tasty. After dinner, a kind of ropes course awaited us, at which we were supposed to get acquainted - very strange tasks did not cause delight in me, so I will not describe them.

The next day began with a presentation of the university, as well as a small dialogue in the QA format. Anyone can ask a question and get an answer. After lunch, the qualifying round in the usual sense began. A small Olympiad was arranged: it was proposed to solve 3 problems in 2.5 hours. A very strange task. Usually they give at least 5 tasks for 3 hours. However, they were simple: two were taken from the cycle of Internet Olympiads for schoolchildren, and one remained unknown. However, the organizers kept their promise - it was a task at the USE level. The tasks turned out to be very boring and simple, so for a few the Olympiad ended in 20 minutes.

First interview

The first interview was supposed to be a short conversation on a specific topic in order to determine the level of spoken English, as well as to check how quickly the person could express his thoughts. I didn’t get the topic, or one of the questions was the topic. The questions are the most common in an interview. Why Innopolis; what do you think of the university; How did your relatives react to this?

After 15 minutes, I was already absolutely pleased with myself, realizing that I went through this interview well. Ahead was dinner and, perhaps most importantly, an interview with professors. Applicants were divided into two groups: one had an interview, the second a ropes course. I ended up in the second group, so the interview took place in the afternoon. I didn’t want to eat at all, the body understood that this was the most serious stage of full-time testing.

I was the very first. I was to have an interview with Professor David Vernon. By the way, the interview was conducted via Skype. It was a great honor for a first-year student to interview a world-famous professor. This is where the problems came to light: it turns out that a motivation letter was not required for the first year, and all my data was on the lists for the third year. Therefore, I had to tell everything about myself from scratch.

It was also surprising that all the questions are, to some extent, the points of a motivation letter, so I easily talked about myself and my achievements. Without knowing it, I told most of the motivation letter. Hearing about my extensive C# development experience, Professor Vernon's face lit up like a sparkler. The final question was about knowledge of algorithms and data structures. Okay, I've been doing this for a long time. When asked, I replied that I had read Stephen Skiena's book. We discussed what I liked and what I didn't. In general, the interview lasted around 15-17 minutes, and this was more than enough to get a feel for whether you are going to Innopolis University or not.

At the closing, there were no preliminary results, although everyone was waiting for them. We could approach to find out the chances, without taking into account interviews with professors. But even here trouble overtook me because of the chosen program for the 3-4 course. I was not listed in the database, and therefore I could not find out the results. The worst, agonizing wait began. On July 19, most of the applicants left, there were third-year students who had already started summer school on July 20, and those whose departure was scheduled for the 20th.

Goodbye, but goodbye, Innopolis!

The most difficult thing was to go from the beautiful Innopolis to the boring Oryol and then wait for the results. They appeared only on the 23rd on grants, and on the 24th I had to urgently deduct, pick up the documents and send them to the Kazan office of Innopolis.

Finally, I would like to say a huge thank you for the fact that very interesting personalities gathered in Innopolis, with whom it was very easy to find a common language, chat on various topics, and play mafia at night.

If you also want to connect yourself with IT, we invite you to a free intensive program training. !

After graduation, he moved from Irkutsk to St. Petersburg to work as a 1C developer. Over time, I wanted to move away from development itself. In search of an opportunity to “upgrade”, I saw beautiful pictures of Innopolis and applied.
As part of the undergraduate internship, he works at Ak Bars Technologies in Kazan.

“By the time I decided to enter Innopolis University, I had a good work experience, and I wanted to develop professionally and expand my competencies. The first thing that attracted me was the curriculum. Actually, this is the main reason why I went here.

Expectations were justified. The level of the teaching staff that taught me was very good. Many of them studied directly at Carnegie Mellon and brought to us the very culture of this program. There was a lot of useful fundamental basic knowledge that made it possible to understand in which direction to move on and how to study further.”

In his hometown, he trained as a software engineer, got a job in an IT company, but eventually hit the ceiling. After defending the project, he stayed to work at the Innopolis University Laboratory (Gagarin project).

Innopolis is a special place. There are always lectures by smart people who can be asked questions. Some courses are taught by visiting professors who come once a month for two or three days and give an intensive course. Several times a year, the university Skypes with gurus - for example, when I was studying, we talked with the pillars of the agile movement - Kent Beck and Alistair Cockburn. These are the people who write the books that we prayed for at one time, because it was something new for the industry.

I learned about Innopolis at school and, having already entered other Moscow universities, as soon as the opportunity arose, I came to the selection and fell in love with the city.

“For me, Innopolis has become a city of IT opportunities. Since it is innovative, most likely, iconic people will come to the university and various IT conferences will be held. Plus teaching in English. And I'm glad I wasn't wrong. I perceive the city as something futuristic, as if you are in the future. I can't imagine where else I could study under such conditions and in such an atmosphere.

Although my dad lives in England, I would like to stay and work in Russia, preferably in Innopolis, because I still really like it here.”

Physically, Innopolis University is a huge building of the academic building, residential buildings of the campus and a sports complex, having seen the internal design of which, hands themselves reach out to take a photo and post it on Instagram. Students from Kazan and Vladivostok, Moscow and St. Petersburg, yesterday's graduates of regional universities and Yandex employees study here. We decided that no one will tell about life and study here better than the students themselves.

I came here, probably because I was already attached to this university community. In the early years of the birth of Innopolis University, my friends, who are also now studying with me, and I came here to work in STEM centers (centers for additional training of schoolchildren at Innopolis University, editor's note). We were sent to study with teachers from Carnegie Mellon, and this gave impetus to further development.

For me it was a tough decision. I "lost" a year, and now my former classmates are writing a diploma. But I thought that, working in the IT field, in any case, I would have to study all the time. And even though I will not receive a diploma this year, I will have it next. I came here for knowledge.

I am from Moscow. Graduated from Bauman Moscow State Technical University in 2009, worked as the head of the IT department of a company that deals with intelligent transport systems. My wife was looking for a master's degree, found this program and showed me - suddenly it will be interesting. I decided to try. I went to the site, filled out an application, they called me, the next day I came here for the preselection. Ok I'm here.

I completed my fourth year at Kazan Federal University, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Information Technologies. I wanted to go somewhere abroad. While I was in my last year of bachelor's degree, I worked and at the same time I was looking for a master's degree. I heard a lot about Innopolis, and then I saw a presentation of the Master's program "Software Development Management" or Master of Science in Information Technology - Software Engineering, which is implemented on the basis of materials from Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA) and thought: "Why not ?

But I was not accepted to this program due to lack of proper work experience. And they took a 90% grant. I got here from the Wait list, I was only informed at the last moment that I passed.

I am studying in a program called Master of Science in Information Technology - Software Engineering, which is the organization of software development processes. The program is based on licensed materials from Carnegie Mellon University. Learning is difficult.

If someone had told me earlier that it was possible to study like this, I would not have believed it. It's a very long marathon under constant pressure. You work at the highest pace, overwhelmed with tasks, and the week does not end.

The main motto of our program is "Learning by doing", so there is a lot of emphasis on practice. This is where the approach to problem analysis is reversed. Critical thinking develops strongly, and then, even while reading books, you begin to cling to the words of the author: “What does good mean? What does bad mean? There should be no blurry abstractions, everything should be measurable and doable.

The output from us should be either a project manager or a system architect.

The whole first semester here, I tried to understand all the subjects myself, not to ask for help, not to be a cheater. If earlier I could afford this, then here the main goal of everyone is to gain knowledge, and there is no point in writing off or solving something according to a template or example. It was difficult. And then, I think, it will not be easier.

In this session, out of three exams, students “hacked” two. The first of them was supposed to be on Monday morning, but it was postponed because the students got their exam papers in advance and they had to be compiled again. And when we came to another exam on Thursday, before our eyes the teacher tore up all the prepared tickets, because they were also “hacked”. But you immediately feel - yes, I really study at an IT university.

If you study well, no difficulties should arise. Last semester, I handed everything in at the last moment, but you don’t have to do that.

In our master's program, the main direction is Software Engineering. In addition, there is a master's degree in robotics, data analysis and security of systems and networks.

People

Here people with very different levels of knowledge. Someone came here because they felt that economics or the humanities were not for him. He himself studied IT and realized that here was his second chance. Thanks to perseverance and motivation, he got into Innopolis University, but he has almost zero knowledge. And, in my opinion, such people are now the most successful, because they work very hard on themselves. And there are those who quit their jobs at Yandex to come to study here. Innopolis attracted a lot of people, probably because of this atmosphere of IT people - people who understand you and speak the same language with you.

The average age of the guys who gathered at our master's program is 26-27 years old, and people already have a lot of experience, they managed to work in the industry, and this program suits us very well. You understand what mistakes you made before and how you could have avoided them. For those who came only after university, with six months of work experience, it is a little harder.

student life

There is a free sports complex and in winter free access to the ski base. Sports are widely promoted here, and now a programmer is not a big shapeless person in a stretched T-shirt, he is handsome, pumped up and generally perfect.

Sometimes in the evenings we get together, play board games, talk about our projects or go to Kazan for additional entertainment. Recently there was a Student's Day and everyone was presented with a free trip to the entertainment center.

In terms of study, I saw everything that I expected here. Very cool professors, interesting program. When we came to the selection, the director of the university told us: “There are transparent doors everywhere so that you can, without fear, come in, for example, to me, and ask any question as your friend.” And I love it.

Here circles are organized in languages - Chinese, German, French, English. There are robotics, drawing, dancing. There is also a library, everyone reads a lot. Sometimes the guys get together and watch movies. For example, on October 21, 2015, the day of "arrival" Doc and Marty with Jennifer from the movie "Back to the Future", arranged such a movie screening.

There is a student association. It is divided into committees. I try to help the sports direction. Now we are negotiating with the sports complex so that the guys can hold their sections there.

There is a student online magazine, a Telegram channel "Innovach". There is some talk about KVN. There are clubs for music and dancing. Maybe there will be something like a Student Spring concert. If there are those who want to do it, it's not bad.

Innopolis University has now opened a free rental of equipment for the ski complex, which is very close here. You just need to sign up in advance, everything is sorted out very quickly. The ski pass is also free here. Shuttles run from Innopolis to the ski area. And it's all free for students.

It all depends on how you study. If you do tasks for the sake of simply passing them, then, probably, you can have time to do something else. But if you study by immersing yourself in tasks, doing them efficiently and at a high level, then the load is very high. On average, 60 hours of net working time per week.

Dormitories

I think the hostels here are among the best in Russia. Before that, I had been in Moscow dormitories of friends. The conditions there are generally not very good: cockroaches, dirt, a strict commandant. And here are the positives. We are not limited in time, we are cleaned, there is the Internet, the commandant is ready to help in everything. There are two types of rooms - doubles and five-beds. But the five-seater is like a small apartment with two rooms and a shared kitchen. You can choose with whom to live, move freely. My friend and I first lived in a double room, but it seemed cramped to us, and we moved to a five-seater. Our neighbors are from St. Petersburg, Vladivostok and Moscow. Only 30% of students here are from the Republic of Tatarstan. There are guys from Ukraine, Africa, Mexico.

For food, we deduct from 2.4 to 9 thousand rubles a month from the scholarship, depending on the choice. You can take breakfast, lunch and dinner, or just lunch, or completely refuse food.

Dorms are super cool! Very convenient and comfortable. They are not what we used to imagine hostels in Russia: a lot of rooms and a bathroom-toilet per floor. There is no such thing here, everyone has their own place, space, all amenities, there are water coolers on each floor. Everything is done so that the student learns and is not distracted by any extraneous problems.
