The department was founded in 1991. by decision of the Academic Council of the University in order to train highly qualified specialists in the field of psychology and municipal government. The founder of the department is Doctor of Philosophy Professor Ivanova Valentina Fedorovna.

The traditions of the cathedral staff are pedagogical excellence and scientific authority, high culture and morality, respect for students and staff, exactingness towards themselves and responsibility for work. Today the department is a powerful scientific and educational center that trains bachelors and masters in the areas of "Psychology", "Sociology", "State and municipal management", the annual release of which is more than 100 people.

As a result of the activities of the department, MIIT got the opportunity to expand the volume of educational services in the specialties that are in demand on the labor market. Within the framework of the designated areas, specialists of the department's profiles are prepared for professional work in state bodies of the federal and municipal levels; managerial and socio-economic services of enterprises and organizations in the relevant positions.

In order to consolidate the theoretical knowledge of students at the department, a comprehensive program of practical training has been developed and is being implemented. The venues for various types of practices are management structures, state-owned enterprises and organizations (the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the socio-psychological services of the RAO Russian Railways, structural divisions of the Moscow Government, etc.). Since 2010, for the best students, internships have been held at foreign universities.

To fulfill the tasks set, the department has the necessary potential of scientific and pedagogical personnel: 8 doctors of sciences, 27 candidates of sciences, 5 st. teachers and 2 graduate students. This allows you to actively involve students in scientific work. Every year, within the framework of the traditional week "Science for Transport", students prepare more than 60 scientific reports and reports, some of which are nominated for participation in the city and All-Russian competitions of student scientific works.

It is the graduating department of the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University in the direction of undergraduate 38.03.04 "State and municipal management", in the direction of magistracy 38.04.02 "Regional management and municipal management".
