By order of the Ministry of Health of the RSFSR dated April 12, 1987 No. 257, the Republican Vertebrology Center was created at the institute, which in 1999 was renamed the Center for Spinal Pathology of the Ministry of Health of Russia. In May 2009, the Interregional public organization“Association of Spine Surgeons”, the president of which was appointed the director of the institute, Dr. medical sciences, Professor Mikhail Anatolyevich Sadovoy.

On the basis of the institute there operates dissertation Council for the defense of doctoral and master's theses in the specialties of “traumatology-orthopedics”, “neurosurgery”, “public health and healthcare”. Since 2004, the Russian scientific and practical journal “Spine Surgery” has been published, which was included in the list of publications of the Higher Attestation Commission in 2005, recommended for publication of the main provisions of dissertation research. All this creates best conditions for the development of Siberian scientific schools, allows us to form a new generation of scientists and clinicians of the highest professional level, which is closely related to the growing needs for the provision of all types of medical care in traumatology, orthopedic and neurosurgical profiles.

Novosibirsk Scientific Research Institute of Orthopedics named after. Ya.L. Tsivyana is actively involved in the development and implementation of innovations in the healthcare sector, primarily organizational ones. At the same time, the emphasis in innovative development largely focused on introducing the most modern approaches to managing and building an effective medical organization.

The institute has come close to creating effective system management of a medical organization back in 2002, according to plan scientists system had to solve issues of not only improving the quality of medical care, but also increasing its accessibility for the population as a whole. The result of two years preparatory work became in 2004 certification of the quality management system and obtaining an international certificate of compliance with the requirements of the ISO 9001 standard. Currently, the institute has moved from a quality management system to a more advanced system - to a system sustainable development medical institution.

With the participation of the Novosibirsk Scientific Research Institute of Traumatology and Traumatology, the first Medical Technopark in Russia was opened in Novosibirsk - the Innovative Medical Technology Center.
