"MARLINS TEST must be taken as national standard on testing the English language to assess the competence of seafarers,” says Igor Safin, director of V.Ships Ukraine, sea captain, candidate of tech. sciences, professor.

According to I. Safin, the problem of the English language is very acute, and not so much acute among crewing companies as among seafarers who, being good professionals in their specialty, cannot pass an English language test and get a job.

“More than half of the officers who have qualification diplomas for a certain position cannot pass the English language test. Today, this is the well-known Marlins Test - the generally accepted world standard for assessing the competence of maritime English, and not only in crewing companies. The test consists of two separate parts: an online computer-based test, which includes elements of grammar and terminology, and a test of spoken English TOSE (Test of spoken English). The combination of these two tests gives a complete assessment of the knowledge and level of English, and also determines the compliance given level the test position for which he is applying.
