Fet's poetic system. The world is like beauty

Fet's poetic activity takes place at a time when literature was charged with direct intervention in everyday life and was expected to resolve complex social problems. Fet's man is immersed in nature, but not in history. He is not interested in life with its everyday worries, troubles, needs, social battles, victories and defeats in them. For his refusal to write about historically topical events and at the same time express his public position, the younger generation, who fed on the articles of Chernyshevsky, Dobrolyubov, Pisarev, the poetry of Nekrasov and the satire of the Iskra poets, took up arms against Fet.

At the same time, impatient commoner democrats often imagined the relationship between literature and life in a rude and vulgar manner. And this often led to the fact that mediocre writers, exploiting modern theme, rose to the top, while talented artists were subjected to undeserved attacks due to the alleged lack of living social content in their work. One way or another, they demanded from literature civic participation or, as they said then, “directions.” The idol of the youth of that time, the ruler of their thoughts, was Nekrasov. He was rightfully considered the protector of the people. Fet was constant example of a different kind.

Of course, not all contemporaries held the point of view that Fet’s poetry was completely alien to life and “detached” from reality. Fet's lyrics were appreciated and enjoyed by Turgenev and L. Tolstoy, Tyutchev and Dostoevsky, Nekrasov and Saltykov-Shchedrin and many other writers, clearly aware of its enormous significance specifically for real life. They understood that Fet said a new word in Russian poetry and in poetry in general, appearing with his original aesthetic and life system of values. There is no doubt that Fet pushed the boundaries of poetry and thanks to this stood alongside Derzhavin and Zhukovsky, Pushkin and Baratynsky, Lermontov and Tyutchev. “Breakaway”, according to younger generation, from real life the poet chose reality as the subject of his lyrics in its manifestations condensed to the moment and extremely fulfilled. He conveyed these moments of life as phenomena of Beauty, as direct insights into the ideal of beauty.

Fet did not see either in the society of that time or in the structure earthly world ideal of Beauty and perfection. According to Fet, the world is structured in such a way that “nightingales peck butterflies.” But this does not mean that there is no beauty and ideal at all. On the contrary, the poet was confident and convinced of their boundlessness, limitlessness and eternity.

Explaining his understanding of art, Fet wrote: “The world in all its parts is equally beautiful. Beauty is scattered throughout the universe and, like all the gifts of nature, influences even those who are not aware of it...” Who can find beauty to capture it? Only a poet, only an artist. Here Fet agreed with L. Tolstoy, who wrote: “I am an artist, and my whole life is spent looking for beauty.” It is in this sense that the poet said that the artist is “a slave to his art.”

Although life gives birth to beauty every minute, but then it (beauty) slips away and disappears. Beauty and harmony appear only for a moment, and this moment must be seized. Fet, in the spirit of Goethe, says: “Stop, just a moment, you are wonderful!” Only a poet endowed with the gift of a powerful word can stop a moment.

Therefore, the goal of the poet, the goal of poetry, the goal of art is to find in reality, in real life, a beautiful moment, “stop” it mentally and sensually, fix it in your soul and then capture it in words, in art, giving it an eternal life. For what? In order to decorate or embellish life? stop admiring your words or your poetic gift? immerse yourself in the pure realms of aesthetics? Not at all. “...The question arises,” Fet asked, “what benefit, other than the common one with all other organisms, does a person derive from the field of beauty? The whole world art testifies to the fact that man, in addition to any material benefit, seeks something else in beauty for his needs.”

Fet had in mind not only spiritual needs and requests, but also something more. He spoke about his cherished thoughts and desires in the poem - “With one push, drive away a living boat...” (1887).

From this poem it is clear that Fet, supposedly running away from human society with its vanity, self-interest, anger, supposedly despising real ordinary life, strives to obtain beauty, embody it in figurative words and convey it in the brilliance of a perfect artistic form. The life in which his contemporaries are immersed is a “dreary dream” in which neither its trembling, nor its “sigh”, nor its breathing are felt. No other life is known to the barely beating “fearless hearts.” And Fet wants people to be able to “rise into another life,” a life that is harmonious, beautiful, ideal, filled and rich in content. To the best earthly life that it can be and the news of which is carried by “the wind from the flowering shores.” Many generations dreamed about this life, and such a dream constituted “the sweetness of secret torments.” She is still a “stranger,” but thanks to the poet’s words, which can “strengthen the battle of fearless hearts,” she can become “her own” and “native.”

Fet uses high and harsh words in this declaration. His line “Intensify the battle of fearless hearts” clearly resembles Pushkin’s poetic formula “With a verb, burn the hearts of people!” Fet’s idea was to capture in words the sensually beautiful face of the harmonious world, to stir up indifferent hearts with the phenomenon of beauty, to arouse an impulse towards it, and in this way to lead the human race into the kingdom of the ideal. This is what the poet’s mission for Fet is, his chosenness and his reward - “his sign and crown!” The calling of art is to recreate, to transform the world through the manifestation of Beauty.

This means that Fet’s lyrics have an undeniable social content and that the poet sets himself grandiose creative tasks of worldwide significance, the “lyrical audacity” of whose solutions matches Shakespeare and Goethe, Pushkin and Tyutchev. Having rejected the socially hostile world, the very hateful sociality that disfigured his fate, the poet seeks beauty everywhere - in the highest and pure spheres of the spiritual manifestations of people, in nature, in love, in “eternal” feelings and experiences.

In addition to the fact that beauty is omnipresent and instantaneous, it is the fundamental principle of life, the universe, existence, a force inherent in life itself, existence itself. For Fet, beauty is not an aesthetic concept, but an existential one. Beauty is a quality of being that has creative power and is capable of transforming this very being, life, the universe, man: it makes the mortal immortal, it transforms the temporary into the eternal, it gives the earthly the dignity of the divine. Beauty can give birth to:

Fet conveys the functions of God to beauty. In his view, God, poet, love, nature, art - different manifestations the same creative power of beauty. It is beauty that communicates its creative ability to God and the poet, who act as its creatures and assistants in the act of transforming the world.

This desire arises in the poet’s soul whenever he is alarmed by poetry, music, or plastic art. In the poem “To the Singer,” the sounds are mesmerizing, taking you away from the mortal earth into the reserved “ringing distance.”

The consciousness of indirect guilt and the severity of the loss weighed on Fet throughout his life, and the result of this was a dual world, something akin to the dual world of Zhukovsky. Contemporaries noted Fet's coldness, prudence and even some cruelty in everyday life. But what a contrast this makes with Fet’s other world - the world of his lyrical experiences, embodied in his poems. All his life Zhukovsky believed in connecting with Masha Protasova in another world, he lived with these memories. Fet is also immersed in his own world, because only in it is unity with his beloved possible. Literary critic Blagoy, in his research, points out the correspondence of these lines to Virgil’s words to Dante that “as a pagan, he cannot accompany him to heaven, and Beatrice is given to him as a companion.” The image of Maria Lazic (and this is undoubtedly her) for Fet is a moral ideal; the poet’s whole life is a desire for an ideal and hope for reunification.

The reason for this state is further explained, the poem reaches its climax: “She became paler and paler, her heart beat more and more painfully.” The tension grows, and suddenly the last quatrain completely changes the picture, leaving the reader in bewilderment: “Don’t wake her, don’t wake her, at dawn she sleeps so sweetly.” These lines provide a contrast with the middle of the poem and return us to the harmony of the first lines, but on a new turn. The call “don’t wake her up” sounds almost hysterical, like a cry from the soul. The same impulse of passion is felt in the poem “The night was shining, the garden was full of the moon...”, dedicated to Tatyana Bers. The tension is emphasized by the refrain: “Love you, hug you and cry over you.” In this poem, the quiet picture of the night garden gives way to and contrasts with the storm in the poet’s soul: “The piano was all open and the strings in it trembled, just like our hearts behind your song.”

She has great power over the poet throughout his life, although already in 1850, shortly after Lazic’s death, Fet writes: “My ideal world was destroyed long ago.” The influence of the beloved woman on the poet is also felt in the poem “For a long time I dreamed of the cries of your sobs.” The poet calls himself “an unfortunate executioner,” he acutely feels his guilt for the death of his beloved, and the punishment for this was “two drops of tears” and “cold trembling,” which he endured forever during “sleepless nights.” This poem is painted in Tyutchev's tones and absorbs Tyutchev's drama.

The biographies of these two poets are similar in many ways - they both experienced the death of their beloved woman, and the immense longing for what was lost gave food for the creation of beautiful love poems. In the case of Fet, this fact seems most strange - how can you first ruin a girl, and then write sublime poems about her all your life?
