But at the same time, along with the desire to take the position of the leader, he does not feel the slightest discomfort from the position of the follower: “In the crowd it was always especially easy and gratifying for me; it was fun for me to go where others were going, to shout when others shouted, and at the same time I loved to watch these others scream." We note that in the end, it was precisely the statement, which turned out to be the freedom of expression of the hero’s will, it was precisely the dependence on the opinion of the “crowd”, on common social class prejudices that prevented the hero from finding happiness: having fallen in love, he did not dare to connect his fate with a girl of a lower origin, the illegitimate daughter of a landowner.

Turgenev masterfully shows the origin and evolution of love feelings in the hero. At the first meeting, the girl whom Mr. N. saw seemed to him very pretty.
