words

If you look in the section "Education" App Store, then the Words application can be found there in the first places. And this is not surprising. Its database contains more than 8 thousand words. In addition, by downloading this application and installing it on your gadget once, you can use it offline.

The main merit of the Words application is that it is able to adapt to a specific user. When reusing this application, it will give the user the words with which he had problems with previous launches of the program. This approach allows you to significantly expand your vocabulary without any problems.

The program is available not only in the official iOS app store, but also in the Play Market.

Probably not one list of the best apps to explore in English impossible to imagine without LinguaLeo. This program implements a game form of learning. The web version of this app easily syncs with your tablets and smartphones.

You can find a lot of materials in it: lessons, training texts and dictionaries. But, if there are not enough of them for you (which is unlikely), then there is always the opportunity to add your own materials. Moreover, it can be not only texts in English, but also music, films and videos.

Easy Ten

And this application is one of the best for increasing vocabulary. It will help to increase it by 10 new words per day. At the same time, just 20 minutes a day is enough. You can learn words using this application using special simulators. In "Easy Ten" you can track your progress. By increasing it, any person studying English will increase motivation and craving for knowledge in this area.

Like LinguaLeo, every Duolingo installer will have their own pet to feed. And you can do this only by studying English and raising your level in it. The complexity of this process lies in wasting a life for wrong answers.

HelloTalk

And this program is not just another application from the official stores of Apple and Google. This is a whole educational platform, on the basis of which the connection between native speakers of foreign languages and users for whom they are foreign is implemented.

With such teachers, you can exchange video calls and text messages. By the way, in "HelloTalk" you can also act as an expert and help foreigners learn your native language.

If you want to improve your English, which is already on high level then start learning slang expressions. And you can do this with the help of "Urban Dictionary". The knowledge that this program gives you will not always find in official dictionaries and phrasebooks.

This application is completely in English. But do you own it at a high level?

Gaps in spoken English, as well as common idioms in it, can be learned thanks to the Conversation English program. This application will help you improve your listening comprehension, improve your reading and improve your vocabulary.

iCan ABC

With this application, you can immerse yourself in the world of the English language without even knowing its basics. With the iCan ABC app, you can learn letters and sounds, improve your vocabulary and improve your pronunciation. This app is great for learning English with kids.

The main disadvantage of iCan ABC is the short free period of using this application. But, if you like it, then why not buy it.

But for learning business English, the English At Work program is well suited. With its help, you can replenish the dictionary with specialized vocabulary and hone your business correspondence skills. This application is well represented by the ideomatic expressions found in the English-speaking business environment.

Memrise

The Memrise app has been designed with scientific methods learning foreign languages. With this application you can learn up to 44 words per hour (!!!). And they allow you to remember such a number of words - memes and game modes. Thanks to them, the work of various aspects of memory is improved.

At the heart of Anki's database is a list of "facts". Each "fact" is a set of objects - words, definitions, pronunciations, etc., from which cards are automatically created according to the templates specified in the database. Objects can consist of text with styles, images, sounds.

Decks (sets of cards) for memorization can be created manually, exported from other similar programs, or loaded from a list created by other users. There are more than 6 thousand ready-made decks of cards in the database of this program.

FluentU

But I also came across some great apps that I had never heard of before! And you probably do too...

How about a program that will make you do a task every time you open Instagram or VKontakte?

Dictionary of English slang with detailed articles?

Or an app that picks up sentence grammar for you?

Below is a selection of the top 30 iOS and Android apps I've tested. They will help you learn English in a fun and effective way.

Universal apps for learning English

Duolingo

Duolingo is the most popular language learning app in the world with 120 million users, 10 million of which are Russian speakers.

Very nice interface. The lessons are well structured, although a bit repetitive. There are pronunciation exercises that try (with varying degrees success) to recognize your speech. For each completed lesson, they give out local game currency. It can be used to buy a new costume for an owl that plays the role of your mentor.

The best part of the app is the daily reminders. The application will write you letters, show notifications, build visit schedules. It really works: in the end, you will become ashamed in front of an owl and you will pass the daily portion of the lessons.

Lingualeo

Duolingo may be the most popular app in the world, but Lingualeo is better known among the Russian-speaking audience.

It has more varied lessons than Duolingo: real texts, videos, many types of test exercises. Part of the exercises (for example, for listening) and grammar courses require a subscription to a premium account. There is also gamification: by doing exercises, you earn meatballs that you feed to the lion.

Lingualeo is my personal favorite among the apps in this section.

Semper

Lessons in Semper are collected in sets by topic, and are created by different authors users. From this all the problems: the quality of the lessons is very different, it is difficult to choose a good one. different types there is no content either, so the lessons are monotonous. But there is one feature in Semper that made me leave the app installed.

Picture this: Let's say you're studying for the GMAT. You click on the Instagram icon, but first you see a short task with a word from the GMAT vocabulary and several translation options. Remember the translation, answer, see the result, and after that you get to Instagram. Great idea that really works: one task is not annoying, and the practice is constant. I put it on Facebook and Telegram 😀

Busuu

What I liked the most about Busuu is the dialogue exercises, where you have to insert missing words into two people's chat. There are also small written exercises that English-speaking users check. Is not professional teachers, but thanks to the fact that several people correct errors and leave comments at once, this is a completely working way to practice written English.

There is also a course for travelers in the application, but only in a premium subscription. Most do not work without a subscription test tasks. Try the free part and decide for yourself if it's worth it. I didn't think so.

Lingvist

Little known, but very good app. There are texts, listening, grammar articles, verification tests. Great emphasis on learning words. The downside for me was that the materials are designed mainly for the level of the language is not higher than the average.

Dictionaries for Android and iOS

Why is it better to learn words with Google help Images, not a dictionary?

reDict

My favorite Russian-English dictionary for iOS. Very nice interface. Included: transcription and voice acting of words, thesaurus, grammar articles. There is a possibility of text recognition for translation, but it does not work well (try better Google Translate). In-app purchases expand the already huge list of thesaurus words and definitions and are not needed for most. Alas, there is no Android version.

Google translate

Official google app. This is not only a dictionary, but also a translator: it translates entire phrases quite successfully. There is handwriting translation (not too relevant for English), voice recognition and - the most interesting - text recognition from the camera in real time. The quality of the translation is not very good, but it looks impressive.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

The official app of one of America's oldest dictionary publishers. There is a transcription, voice acting of words, recognition voice input. Feature - built-in quizzes on definitions and spellings of words. You can also install the "word of the day" widget in the notification center. The paid version disables ads and expands the thesaurus, but you can get by with the free version.

Dictionary.com

In this dictionary, I like the detailed definitions and description of the origin of the word. In addition to transcription, you can simply look at the pronunciation of a word by syllables (lang-gwij for language). The notification center widget not only shows the word of the day, but also offers to guess its meaning.

Word memorization apps

Most of the apps below use interval method. They remind you of words when you are most likely to forget them. Numerous tests have shown that this is the most effective method learn new words.

Memrise

Memrise helps you memorize words and phrases using spaced repetition. The words are voiced, for many a video of their pronunciation is recorded different people on the street. There are excellent ready-made lists of words and phrases for different levels and on different topics. Memrise founder Ed Cook can remember 1000 random numbers and 10 shuffled decks of cards per hour. Perhaps he should be trusted!

The best thing to do is to use the Memrise app and website in tandem as they keep your progress in sync. On the site, you can add difficult words pictures and/or text associations. This creates a strong association and is great for remembering. This functionality is not implemented in the mobile version.

Easy ten

On the one hand, a great idea (ten words a day is the optimal amount) and a great interface. On the other hand, an exclusively paid version, with a monthly subscription. Try it and decide for yourself, because the quality of the application is really on top. I would prefer Upmind to him from the same developers.

upmind

A new app from the creators of Easy ten. Animated images have been added to the words. This is generally good, but since the images are added automatically, they are not always suitable. Also added is the voice acting of the Russian translation of words, but it also works strangely: sometimes it does not match the written translation, although in the application description. Let's write this off as a very recent release of the application and let's hope that the developers will fix it.

Unlike Easy ten, Upmind does not require the purchase of a premium account, but without it it will be difficult. New words and new tasks are added slowly, rubies can speed up this process, which replenish slowly in the free version. But I liked Upmind even more than Easy ten, and it is literally head and shoulders above other similar applications. I think it's well worth the subscription.

AnkiApp

It is impossible not to mention the clone of the legendary Anki program, adapted for mobile platforms. The only way to learn words is flipping flashcards. They show you the word, you “turn over” the card, see the translation and answer whether you remembered its translation and how difficult it was. Depending on your answer, the application changes the period after which it will show it to you again.

You can add cards yourself using pictures and different fonts. There are thousands of ready-made card sets from different sources and of different quality, which are added, including by the users themselves. Understanding this variety and finding the right one is quite difficult, especially given the not very well-functioning search. But you can find sets of not just words, but also, for example, irregular verbs.

Tinycards

My favorite flashcard app. Developed by the creators of Duolingo. Great interface, very nice to use. Several ways to test memorization. But with ready-made kits, the same problem as in the case of AnkiApp - the quality varies greatly, it is difficult to choose the right one.

Mobile apps for learning English grammar

Phrasal verbs

Application for learning English phrasal verbs: add up, find out, etc. A picture is drawn for each phrasal verb, the pronunciation is voiced, there are several examples with voice acting. There are also short jokes, with a few phrasal verbs in each text. Very high quality application.

English Phrasal Verbs

The best phrasal verb app for android. Includes mechanism spaced repetitions. Entirely in English, so suitable for intermediate language levels and above.

Filp and Learn, Irregular verbs

Great idea and implementation: verbs are displayed in groups on the usual flipped flash cards. You can select from the 50 most frequent to all 507 words at a time. When you memorize a verb, you put it in a “box”, and so on until you learn everything.

There are transcriptions and translations of verbs. Very nice interface. The only negative is that there is no mechanism for spaced repetitions, so you will have to keep track of forgotten verbs yourself.

Color Verbs

Color Verbs is an app for learning and repeating irregular verbs for Android. There are pictures, examples of use and voice acting for verbs. There is a practice mode. It contains only 200 of the most popular verbs, but for levels below Advanced, this is quite enough.

Learning English by video

FluentU

Great app that not many people know about. At the heart of FluentU are videos for different language levels. Complex vocabulary for each video is analyzed separately, with examples and pictures. There are subtitles for the video, for any word of which you can also see an explanation.

TED

TED is regular most interesting conferences, performances from which can be viewed in the application. Vocabulary of different levels, charismatic speakers, different topics, among which you will definitely find something interesting for yourself. For all videos there are subtitles in English, for the most popular - and in Russian. Try it, you will like it.

YouTube

It hardly needs any description. 😄 The largest video archive in the world. Great amount recordings of TV shows, video blogs and even special video lessons in English. Find something you like and watch regularly, it's one of the most fun ways to learn English. Try for example ☺️

Applications for mobile phone- a convenient way to learn English anytime, anywhere. They allow you to memorize new words, improve grammar and listening skills. And although they are unlikely to replace full-fledged language classes, they will definitely allow you to turn language learning into a good habit.
